Having lost his mother, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, at the young age of 19, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has made a name for himself by promoting political stability and avoiding conflict with adversaries-while ensuring that national space is not conceded.
In December 2021, Chairman Bilawal galvanized the then opposition parties against the government of Imran Khan, initiated a No-Confidence Motion, and successfully replaced the government through constitutional means in April 2022. He subsequently joined the coalition government as Foreign Minister. As a young Foreign Minister, he worked tirelessly to defuse the diplomatic and economic crises inherited from the previous administration. Under his leadership, Pakistan avoided economic and diplomatic minefields-benefits that are evident three years later.
During his tenure, Pakistan bore the brunt of climate change, and Bilawal became the country's voice on the global stage, advocating for climate justice and highlighting how Pakistanis are victims of the developed world's carbon footprint. This culminated in the International Conference on Climate Resilient Pakistan in Geneva, co-hosted by UN Secretary-General Mr. António Guterres. Mr. Guterres, acknowledging our plight, stated: 'No country deserves to endure what happened to Pakistan.'
At this significant event, Pakistan successfully secured international funding, with Bilawal committing to transform the challenge of recovery and reconstruction into an opportunity to build a more resilient Pakistan. Through tangible actions, Bilawal has shown that he walks the talk-his government in the province of Sindh is constructing 2.1 million homes for flood-affected people, of which 600,000 have already been built.
Since his parliamentary debut in 2018, his clarity-driven, statesmanlike approach has not only defined his political persona but also paved the way for unity, progress, and democratic resilience. With the PPP leading the provinces of Sindh and Balochistan and playing a conscientious role in Parliament, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has helped stabilize and strengthen the democratic system. The passage of the 26th Amendment in October 2024 stands as a shining example of his visionary leadership, ensuring optimal give-and-take (within legal bounds) to maintain continuity and longevity in democratic governance. I am personally witness to his patience, perseverance, and foresight in building political consensus for the amendment's passage.
Bilawal has consistently demonstrated that age is merely a number when it comes to political sagacity. His remarkable maturity and nuanced understanding of Pakistan's complex challenges set him apart. His leadership style reflects a deep commitment to democratic principles and inclusive governance, which distinguishes him in a polarized and often hostile political landscape.
During the recent war-like situation with India, Bilawal once again stepped forward to articulate Pakistan's position internationally, exposing Indian propaganda. His diplomatic engagement helped improve Pakistan's global image and underscored his vision of a more connected and cooperative Pakistan.
At the United Nations, Bilawal called on the international community to press India for a comprehensive dialogue with Pakistan. He warned that recent military escalations had heightened the risk of conflict and emphasized the urgency of addressing the unresolved Kashmir issue, which lies at the heart of Indo-Pak tensions. Despite rising hostilities, Bilawal reiterated Pakistan's readiness to cooperate with India in combating terrorism.
As Foreign Minister, during his visit to India in May 2023 for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, he again emphasized resolving the Kashmir dispute in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions. He also addressed regional threats of extremism and terrorism, calling for collective action free of political bias.
It is often said that history repeats itself. Just as Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto presented Pakistan's case to the world even when they held no official office, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari now follows in their footsteps. His statesmanlike approach is precisely what Pakistan-and the wider region-needs: to diffuse tensions and present a united, dignified, and constructive image of Pakistan, paving the way for long-term economic and political stability.

LCCI welcomes trade deal with US
LAHORE: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry has warmly welcomed the newly finalized trade agreement between Pakistan and the United States and described it as a game changer for the country's economic future. In a statement, LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad, Senior Vice President Engineer Khalid Usman and Vice President Shahid Nazir Chaudhry hoped that the agreement would open new avenues for Pakistani exports and significantly strengthen bilateral trade relations. This shift provides Pakistani exporters with a rare opportunity to capture additional market share in the US market, especially in sectors where Pakistani goods already enjoy a competitive edge. Terming the development a direct outcome of strengthened diplomatic and military ties, the LCCI leaders said that the recent high-level engagement between the two countries, particularly the lunch hosted by US President Donald Trump in honour of Pakistan's Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, has played a pivotal role in resetting the tone of bilateral cooperation while the great untiring efforts by the Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurengzeb under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's leadership have made this agreement finalized. The office-bearers stated that the current trade volume between Pakistan and the United States has already crossed $12 billion in 2024, with Pakistan maintaining a healthy trade surplus. The new agreement is likely to accelerate this trend further by attracting foreign investment and boosting industrial productivity. Additionally, the LCCI appreciated the inclusion of provisions for collaboration in the oil and energy sector, which they believe will be crucial for Pakistan's long-term energy security and economic sustainability. The LCCI office-bearers urged the business community to seize the new opportunities created by this agreement. They assured exporters of their full support in accessing the American market and navigating the new trade framework. They said that the agreement with Pakistan and United States is more than a diplomatic achievement it is an economic game changer that reflects Pakistan's rising profile in global trade. Lebanese govt, Hezbollah on warpath
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said Thursday that he was determined to disarm Hezbollah, a step it has come under heavy US pressure to take, despite the group's protests that doing so would serve Israeli goals. Hezbollah and Israel fought a two-month war last year that left the militant group badly weakened, though it retains part of its arsenal. Israel has kept up its air strikes on Hezbollah targets despite a November ceasefire, and has threatened to continue them until the group has been disarmed. In a speech on Thursday, Aoun said Beirut was demanding "the extension of the Lebanese state's authority over all its territory, the removal of weapons from all armed groups including Hezbollah and their handover to the Lebanese army". He added it was every politician's duty "to seize this historic opportunity and push without hesitation towards affirming the army and security forces' monopoly on weapons over all Lebanese territory... in order to regain the world's confidence". Under the November ceasefire, Hezbollah was to withdraw its fighters north of the Litani river, about 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the Israeli border. Israel was meant to withdraw all its troops from Lebanon, but has kept them in five areas it deems strategic. The truce was based on a two-decade-old UN Security Council resolution that said only the Lebanese military and UN peacekeepers should possess weapons in the country's south, and that all non-state groups should be disarmed. However, that resolution went unfulfilled for years, with Hezbollah's arsenal before the latest war seen as far superior to the army's, and the group wielding extensive political influence

PM vows to root out scourge of terrorism
Listen to article Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, while chairing a review meeting of the Steering Committee on Counter-Terrorism and Establishment of the State Writ (Harden the State), on Thursday expressed resolve to eradicate the scourge of terrorism from the country. Speaking during the meeting here, he said, "The state of Pakistan is determined to root out the scourge of terrorism and the world recognizes our successful operations against terrorists" "The state of Pakistan has adopted a multi-pronged strategy in the war against terrorism," he said adding, "Pakistan has made full and effective use of important elements such as ground operations, relevant legislation, meaningful public communication and discouragement of extremist thinking." The committee directed effective coordination between the federal and provincial governments against terrorism and strict implementation of its recommendations in this regard. "The role of the brave sons of the armed forces in this war against terrorism is commendable and laudable," he remarked. He said, "The entire nation, including me, is proud of the officers and officials who laid down their lives for the country and their families who were imbued with the spirit of sacrifice." "The entire Pakistani nation, the brave forces, law enforcement agencies, and intelligence agencies are united and focused in the war against terrorism," he added. The prime minister said, "Pakistan's brave forces fought the terrorists vigorously in Operation Radd-ul-Fasaad and Zarb-e-Azb, and the world recognized Pakistan's victory in the recent historic Marka-e-Haq." He acknowledged that the provincial governments, the Intelligence Bureau, the Ministry of Interior, the Counter-Terrorism Department, especially the Punjab Counter-Terrorism Department, had taken very effective steps in this war against terrorism. "Pakistan is working on a comprehensive, effective and workable strategy to completely eliminate Fitna-al-Hindustan and Fitna-al-Khawarij and other such anti-social elements," he stressed. He said, "With the joint strategy and cooperation of all the relevant institutions, effective operations were undertaken against smuggling, which made it possible to prevent the menace."
