Belarus journalist is convicted of treason and jailed for 10 years as crackdown on dissent continues

A Belarusian journalist was convicted of treason and revealing state secrets and was sentenced to 10 years in prison after a closed trial, a media group said Friday, the eve of the fifth anniversary of a disputed election that kept authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko in power and unleashed mass protests. Danil Palianski, who worked for several independent news agencies, was sentenced on July 25, but the trial's outcome was only revealed Friday by the Belarusian Association of Journalists. In addition to the prison sentence, Palianski was fined the equivalent of about $7,000. 'Belarus has already become the black hole of Europe, where people are judged for words and thoughts,' said BAJ leader Andrei Bastunets. Palianski, who was detained in September, is one of 37 journalists behind bars in Belarus. His jailing is part of a sustained crackdown on government critics after unprecedented mass protests following Lukashenko's disputed election on Aug. 9, 2020. Human rights groups say authorities have arrested more than 65,000 people, and hundreds of thousands more have fled the country in fear of persecution. There are about 1,187 political prisoners in Belarus, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate and peace activist Ales Bialiatski, according to the human rights group Viasna, which he founded.

Woman ‘sexually assaulted' by man on London Underground train – as cops release CCTV in urgent hunt for attacker

COPS have released a photo of a man they want to speak with following an alleged sexual assault on a train. Police said it took place on a Jubilee Line train on June 9, just before midnight. A woman sat next to a man on the train after boarding at North Greenwich. The man attempted to engage her in conversation before sexually assaulting her, police said. Both got off the train at Baker Street where the man approached the woman again. The man eventually left the station. Officers believe the man in the image may have information which could help their investigation. Anyone who recognises him is asked to contact BTP by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 13 of 10 June. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Calling shoplifters ‘scumbags' is offensive, warn police

A shop owner was told by police that his sign about 'scum bag' shoplifters had 'caused offence'. Rob Davies, 61, who runs a retro shop in Wrexham, North Wales, put up notices around his shop to inform customers that cabinets were locked due to problems with shoplifting. His home-made notice stated: 'Due to scum bags shoplifting, please ask for assistance to open cabinets.' But, police attended the Run Ragged shop to tell him that someone had complained that the signs 'caused offence' and asked him to 'take the signs down'. Mr Davies said: 'One person whinges about a sign, and the police turn up and ask if I can take the signs down. 'I have a legitimate reason to complain to the police due to thieving, they don't turn up.' He said that the shop was plagued by theft and he gave up reporting it to the police – so has instead taken his own measures to protect stock. Police told Mr Davies to 're-word' the signs as they could be seen as 'provocative and offensive'. He said: 'You couldn't make it up. When I asked who it could offend, I was told a member of the public had reported the sign to them. I just wonder if that person was a shoplifter who was offended as it was detrimental to their work? 'Well guys, if you know me you will know I don't mean to cause offence but in this case please feel free to be offended and stop frequenting my shop. You are no loss.' Mr Davies has run the shop, which sells vintage clothing and accessories, for five years and said in the last year he caught and reported five shoplifters – and lost about £200 in stock. He said: 'The police came out to the first one, handed me back the shirt the guy had stolen and told him to get on his way. When you're not getting back-up by the authorities, you're paying for. It's really difficult.' Mr Davies said he received a lot of support about the matter. 'It means a lot, and restored my faith that there is that sense of community,' he said. One fellow shopkeeper gave him another sign reading: 'If you find anything offensive here, please let us know so we can have a good laugh.'
