Honda, Acura Accused of ‘Start-Stop Engine Failure' Affecting up to 2.2 Million Vehicles
A slew of Honda and Acura models are under federal investigation due to reports of drivers' automatic stop-start functions failing to restart after turning off. Affected owners have noted their engines as being unable to restart after coming to a complete stop at a traffic light or intersection while the feature is engaged. Some drivers added that their vehicle required a jumpstart to correct the claimed defect. The NHTSA's (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's) investigation applies to certain 3.5-liter V-6 engine Hondas and Acuras paired with a nine-speed transmission. These models include the brands' 2016-2019 Honda Pilot, 2015-2020 Acura TLX, 2016-2020 Acura MDX, 2019-2022 Honda Passport, and 2020-2023 Honda Ridgeline.
Honda and Acura have been receiving auto start-stop failure reports since June 2022, which began with 2016- 2019 MY Honda Pilots. In January 2023, Honda addressed the issue with service bulletins containing a repair outline consisting of a two-stage countermeasure. These stages included a Programmed Fuel Injection software update and the replacement of the starter assembly, starter relays, and a valve adjustment if the first stage didn't resolve the problem. However, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has continued to receive complaints of the start-stop issue from Honda and Acura drivers, with 'many complainants alleging the campaign countermeasures had been completed,' according to the NHTSA's filing.
The ODI has opened an engineering analysis to further evaluate the potential safety issue after receiving over 1,300 driver complaints. ODI officials acknowledged no fewer than four accidents caused by the auto start-stop problem—two of which resulted in injuries. The ODI has also received reports that the issue is causing fires. If the ODI's investigation turns into an official recall, up to 2,209,466 Honda and Acura models could be affected. In the meantime, drivers of potentially impacted models can manually deactivate the auto start-stop system. Honda US has an extended 10-year/unlimited mileage warranty for affected vehicles that haven't been repaired and didn't benefit from the software update.
Auto start-stop systems are designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by shutting off a car when it's stationary. According to Edmunds, engineers estimate potential fuel savings for a vehicle engaged in auto start-stop at 3-10% on average, with a peak rate of 12%. These figures would be equivalent to a car that usually gets 20 mpg in the city earning 22 or 23 mpg. Edmunds' real-world tests reflected the engineers' claims as accurate, but fuel savings took a significant hit with the air conditioning active on a hot day. Drivers are most likely to experience improved fuel economy via automatic start-stop in mild weather conditions. Optimizing automatic start-stop fuel savings also requires driving discipline, like resisting the impulse to creep up at a red traffic light if the car in front moves. A Honda spokesperson told The New York Post: 'Honda has already been in communication with the agency on this [auto start-stop] topic and will continue to cooperate with NHTSA as the investigation continues.'
While auto start-stop technology has good intentions, reactions from drivers are mixed, with some citing difficulty adjusting to the feature's feel. Outside of Honda and Acura owner complaints, an auto start-stop feature often won't activate under certain conditions, like frigid temperatures, when the engine or transmission hasn't warmed up, and if the battery is weak or working hard to power other systems like climate control during cold weather. Auto-stop start technology generally has a required operating range of between 32°F and 86°F—so if you'd like to experience its benefits, it's essential to understand the feature's limitations.

Nor was it easy to do, with the Big Blue bag awkwardly placed diagonally in the back, the Green Bag plopped on top at its own weight angle and the Fancy Bag just barely fitting. It took a lot of tries to get here, and again, the reason is that angled opening. Actually, let me amend that last sentence: It took me a lot of tries to get there in the HR-V, because after two attempts in the ADX, I gave up and looked back to see what nonsense I eventually came up with in the Honda. Now, while the HR-V's result underwhelmed for its segment, that's not the case when lining up the ADX's identical result in its luxury segment. As always, it's a matter of perspective. This result is better than the rather lame Audi Q3, which has an even worse liftgate angle. Utilizing the Volvo XC40's underfloor storage area allows it to match this result with all the bags loaded. The BMW X1 with its available spare tire also matches this result, but its cargo area is much boxier and far easier to load as a result. (Without a spare tire, the X1 would be superior.) The Mercedes GLA accepted all the bags and had room left over and is therefore higher on the leaderboard. The Mercedes GLB, meanwhile, is by far the segment champion thanks to its ultra-boxy cargo area. So, the ADX's capacity is OK for the segment, but its shape makes for difficult loading. It's also the same as the HR-V, but again, that's not surprising. Now, for some odds and ends.

Stellantis Exec Wants Europe to Adopt Cheap, Tiny, Japanese-Style Kei Cars
Though it may seem different today, more than half a century ago, American and European drivers were not as familiar with Japanese automakers and the types of cars they offered. Today, well-known Japanese brands like Honda, Toyota, and Nissan are primarily recognized in the West for their locally built compact cars, sedans, crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. However, the situation is quite different in Japan. In fact, the majority of vehicles on the streets in Japan are not Accords, Civics, CR-Vs, Corollas, Crowns, or Camrys; instead, many fall under a category of super-compact vehicles known as "Kei cars." These unique compact vehicles are an essential mobility solution for Japanese drivers navigating their roads, but recently, Stellantis Chairman John Elkann encouraged European regulators to consider adopting a similar concept. On June 12, Stellantis Chairman John Elkann emphasized the urgent need for Europe to innovate and produce smaller, more affordable vehicles in the same vein as Japanese 'kei cars.' He pointed out that the high prices of current offerings, which he blamed squarely on excessively strict vehicle regulations, are hurting consumer demand for cars on the continent. During his remarks at the 2025 Automotive News Europe Congress, he pointed out that as recently as 2019, nearly 50 different models were sold in Europe with a price tag below €15,000 ($17,400); however, just a single model under that price tag exists these days. Elkann suggested that Europe should look for inspiration from Japan, where tiny and cheap kei cars have long captured a significant market share. He even proposed that Europe's version of the kei car could be named the E-Car. "There's no reason why, if Japan has a kei car, which is 40 percent of the market, Europe should not have an E-Car," Elkann said. In Europe, Stellantis already sells electric microcars that are classified as quadricycles in some European countries, specifically the bubble-shaped Citroën Ami, Opel Rocks-e, and Fiat Topolino. These vehicles' sales in Europe show a strong market for affordable electric mobility. However, a large variety of cars are offered as kei-compliant vehicles in Japan, including off-roaders like the Japanese-market Suzuki Jimny, roadsters like the Daihatsu Copen, family cars like the Honda N-Box, and even utility-focused kei trucks like the Mitsubishi Minicab. The 'Kei' in Kei car is short for a Japanese word called kei-jidōsha (軽自動車), which roughly translates to "light vehicle" in English. Kei cars are defined by maximum size and displacement restrictions, meaning they are only allowed to have a maximum length of about 134 inches, a width of about 58 inches, a height of about 79 inches, and a gas engine displacement of 660 cubic centimeters. In Japan, Kei cars are seen as around-town vehicles for city-dwellers, as their size and engine restrictions help owners by guaranteeing much lower tax and insurance costs while freeing up much-needed road space. Elkann emphasized that small cars, like Stellantis's own Fiat 500, have historically represented the core of the European automotive industry and served as a symbol of affordable mobility for the masses. Unfortunately, increasing regulations that made cars heavier and more expensive have made them unprofitable to manufacture. Some of the requirements for cars, ranging from small vehicles to SUVs, include safety features such as sensors that detect when a driver falls asleep and an SOS button. Elkann argues that features significantly increase the cost of vehicles primarily used for short city journeys. "We are going to face more than 120 new regulations by 2030" in Europe, he said. "If you look at our engineers, more than 25 percent just work on compliance, so no value is added." Though the buying preferences of the American car-buying public may indicate that no Fiat, Citroën, or Alfa Romeo-branded European E-cars would make it on American shores, this story out of Europe shows that Stellantis is facing two different kinds of problems on two different continents with huge car-buying potential with two wildly different sets of preferences. While we may be preoccupied with Ram Trucks and Jeep stuff, it is important to note that John Elkann and the incoming CEO, Antonio Filosa, are also responsible for keeping a significant number of Europe's car factories buzzing. However, in remarks at the same conference, Elkann said that Filosa was the right choice in an automotive industry with defined challenges in particular regions. "The experience that Antonio had running Argentina, running Brazil, running South America, and recently running North America is very much in phase with how the world is going between regulations, tariffs, and how you ultimately navigate that constructively with political forces," he said. BMW Thinks the 'Timing Is Right' For Hydrogen. Is It Really?
Battery electric vehicles are on the decline. Customers continue to shy away from EVs as more government entities pull back on their once-overly ambitious fuel economy standards. Automakers, too, have announced major investments in gas and hybrid powertrains as the market shifts. That said, many companies are still looking for ways to wean off gasoline. BMW is one of them. Alongside Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota, BMW still believes that hydrogen can be a viable source of vehicle propulsion over the next decade. The company debuted the iX5 hydrogen fuel-cell prototype in 2024, and it promises a new hydrogen-powered SUV in just a few years. That could help incentivize automakers to develop hydrogen vehicles at a higher clip. Alongside BMW's already extensive lineup of electric vehicles, Guldner believes that hydrogen could offer the "best of both worlds." '[Hydrogen vehicles] offer the electric driving experience—quiet, zero emissions, instant torque—but can be refuelled in three or four minutes, like a gas car… Hydrogen neatly solves [charging] problems.' BMW currently works closely with Toyota in hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle development; the iX5 prototype is powered by Toyota fuel cells. That partnership will continue well into 2028 for the development of BMW's first production fuel-cell vehicle. "For the 2028 model, we're extending our cooperation," Guldner notes, "working closely with Toyota on the full fuel-cell system design to harness economies of scale." Is It Really the Time for Hydrogen? Photo by: BMW USA Automakers have been exploring hydrogen propulsion for decades, with no real results to show. Companies like Honda and Toyota manufacture hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles for limited markets, but as we've seen, they haven't exactly been hot commodities. Most of their success with hydrogen has been on the heavy equipment side. In an interview with Motor1 back in July, the Group Lead of Technical, Safety, and Regulatory PR for Honda, Chris Martin, said: 'It's more about growing the overall hydrogen economy. And ultimately, we do see FCEV as a bigger part of personal transportation later, but we need to grow the hydrogen economy to a point where it can already be in place to support the consumers and the regular drivers.' But with regulation rollbacks and automakers diverting investments from EVs to other forms of propulsion—including companies like Honda and Toyota—those already invested in hydrogen fuel-cell production could see this as an opportunity to dive even deeper. As mentioned by Guldner, more hydrogen stations are popping up globally as investments grow. Australia recently opened its first public hydrogen fueling station, while a $30-million investment will see one of the first green hydrogen supply units constructed in Brazil. In Europe, the hydrogen market as a whole was valued at $77.8 billion in 2024 , but that's expected to jump to $83.6 billion by the end of this year and reach $149.3 billion by 2033 thanks largely to the European Union's Green Deal and Hydrogen Strategy, which aims for 40 gigawatts of renewable hydrogen electrolyzers by 2030. Germany, France, and Spain, meanwhile, are currently at the forefront of hydrogen adoption, with those three countries accounting for over 50 percent of Europe's current hydrogen capacity. BMW is still invested heavily in electric vehicles, with the German automaker's next-generation EVs touting as much as 621 miles of range on a single charge. But CEO Oliver Zipse isn't necessarily convinced that going all in on EVs is the solution, either. He recently said that "one-sided regulations that limit supply" lead down a "dead-end street." BMW will continue producing gas, electric, and hydrogen vehicles for the foreseeable future.
