News 8 visits schools for World Read Aloud Day
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – This Wednesday is World Read Aloud Day and News 8's Meteorologist James Gilbert headed to School No. 33 and Sports Director Thad Brown went to School No. 54 to read to students!
This event is celebrated around the world by students, schools, and literacy advocates in more than 100 countries. It's designed to promote reading and the awareness that everyone has an inherent right to learn to read.
'It's an opportunity for them to see community leaders that they have seen out in their neighborhoods in a school setting and have a fun time with them, to just sit down and read,' Principal Lisa Garrow said.
James read to Mrs. Pelliccia's class one of his favorite books, 'The Bear Snores On'.

Weather Forecast: Unsettled weather pattern to start off the week
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — I hope you were able to get outside and enjoy the dry weather because we are now entering an unsettled weather pattern. Rain showers are expected to enter the region around dinnertime this evening. Temperatures are expected to fall into the upper 50s for overnight lows. We're keeping an eye on the potential for afternoon thunderstorms tomorrow, some of which could become strong to severe. As more forecast model data comes in, we'll have a clearer picture of their strength and impact. If conditions begin to look concerning, we'll be sure to keep you updated. Additionally, another round of thunderstorms may move through late Monday night into Tuesday morning. Tuesday's weather will remain unsettled, with off-and-on rain showers expected throughout the day. While widespread severe weather is unlikely, periods of light to moderate rain could make for a damp and overcast day. Temperatures will hover near seasonal averages, and lingering moisture from Monday may lead to areas of patchy morning fog, especially in low-lying spots. After Tuesday's showers, a welcome change is on the horizon. Beginning Wednesday, a ridge of high pressure is expected to settle over the region, bringing several days of warm, dry, and sunny weather. This stretch of pleasant conditions should last through at least Thursday—perfect for outdoor plans, travel, or simply soaking up some early summer sunshine. Daytime highs will climb into the upper 70s to low 80s, with comfortable overnight lows and relatively low humidity. Looking ahead to the weekend, we're monitoring the potential for more showers. However, there's still some uncertainty regarding the exact timing and strength of any system that may develop. Stay tuned for updates, especially if you have outdoor plans for Father's Day. Wildfire smoke brings poor air quality back to West Michigan
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An air quality alert has been issued for the Lower Peninsula through noon on Friday as smoke from Canadian wildfires lingers. On Thursday morning, the Air Quality Index reached unhealthy levels across much of the state with the smoke thick enough at the surface to contribute to reduced visibility. You may get an occasional campfire scent along with added congestion and eye irritation due to the smoke. During this time, strenuous outdoor activity is discouraged, especially for sensitive groups such as those with asthma or heart disease who could experience a greater impact. Young children and the elderly are more susceptible to the effects of poor air quality. Limiting outdoor burning and sources of air pollution is helpful. While the air quality alert is set to expire at noon on Friday, it's possible the smoke may stick around into the weekend with no significant forcing or pattern change coming in the next few days to help push the smoke away. Stay with Storm Team 8 as we continue to track the smoke. If you have photos of the smoke that you'd like to share with News 8, to submit them. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
