EGA receives 900 applications from young Emiratis at National Service Career Fair
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, has received 900 applications from young female and male Emiratis at National Service Career Fair, which took place in Expo City Dubai from 12-14 May 2025.
During the career fair, EGA signed an agreement with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to provide scholarships to UAE National students in subjects relevant to EGA talent needs. EGA's National Training programmes develop high school leavers for technical roles in the company's industrial operations and administration. More than 5,000 UAE Nationals have graduated from these programmes since they were first established in 1982, with many then having long and successful careers with EGA and some reaching senior leadership positions.
EGA's Graduate Training programme is for university graduates. Graduate trainees complete 18 or 24 months of training for supervisory positions in corporate functions or in industrial operations in front-line roles, such as tending reduction cells.
In 2024, EGA hired more than 220 UAE Nationals, including in the longstanding National and Graduate Training programmes.
New recruits from the National Service Career Fair are expected to start from September 2025.
Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium, said: 'The future growth of EGA and our nation depends on of the next generation of UAE National leaders. We are committed to empowering our young talents, both women and men, to contribute to advancing the UAE's industrial growth. I am pleased to see many young talented UAE Nationals engage with our team at UAE National Service Career Fair and I look forward to welcoming new talents to EGA.'
EGA already has one of the highest Emiratisation rates of any major company on a like-for-like basis accounting for the high proportion of blue-collar roles in heavy industry. More than 1,300 UAE Nationals now work at EGA. Over 700 of EGA's Emirati employees are under the age of 35.
At the end of 2024, EGA's in-focus Emiratisation rate was 44.5 per cent. EGA now aims to accelerate in-focus Emiratisation to reach 50 per cent by the end of 2027. This means EGA expects to hire up to 600 UAE Nationals over the period.
EGA has participated in 14 career fairs so far in 2025, including both major fairs and EGA's own recruitment drives, such as those conducted with Dubai Government Human Resources Department, Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, Department of Government Enablement, HR Department of Ras Al Khaimah Government, HR Department of Fujairah Government.

About EGA
Since 1975, when it was founded as Dubai Aluminium by His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Emirates Global Aluminium has been innovating aluminium to make modern life possible.
Today EGA is the world's biggest 'premium aluminium' producer and the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside the oil and gas industry.
EGA is equally-owned by Mubadala Investment Company of Abu Dhabi and the Investment Corporation of Dubai. It is the largest company jointly owned by the two Emirates.
EGA is an integrated aluminium producer, with operations on four continents from bauxite mining to the production of cast primary aluminium and recycling. EGA operates aluminium smelters in Jebel Ali and Al Taweelah in the United Arab Emirates, an alumina refinery in Al Taweelah, a bauxite mine and associated export facilities in the Republic of Guinea, a speciality foundry in high strength recycled aluminium in Germany, and a recycling plant in the United States.
EGA's aluminium is the second largest made-in-the UAE export after oil and gas. In 2024, EGA sold 2.74 million tonnes of cast metal. EGA is the only UAE producer and makes the UAE the fifth largest aluminium producing nation in the world.
EGA has more than 400 customers in over 50 countries. In 2024, value-added products accounted for 82 per cent of EGA's cast metal sales.
EGA's aluminium is primarily used in the construction, automotive, packaging, aerospace and electronics industries.
Around 10 per cent of EGA's aluminium production is sold in the UAE to around 26 downstream aluminium companies that make products with EGA's aluminium. The growing broader aluminium sector in the UAE supports more than 52,000 jobs. EGA itself employs over 7,000 of these people including more than 1,300 UAE Nationals.
EGA has focused on technology development for over 30 years. EGA has used its own technology for every smelter expansion since the 1990s and has retrofitted all its older production lines. In 2016 EGA became the first UAE industrial company to licence its core industrial process technology internationally.
As a corporate citizen of the UAE, EGA aspires in all its operations to be measured amongst the world's leading metals and mining companies in meeting its environmental and social responsibilities. In 2017, EGA became the first Middle East headquartered company to join the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, a global programme to foster greater sustainability and transparency in the aluminium industry. In 2019, EGA's Al Taweelah site became the first in the Middle East to receive certification from ASI for its sustainability practices and performance. EGA's Jebel Ali site was certified in 2021. EGA's bauxite mining subsidiary, Guinea Alumina Corporation, achieved the first ASI certification in Guinea in 2023. Al Taweelah alumina refinery was certified later in 2023. EGA's German speciality foundry was certified in 2023, before its acquisition by EGA.
In 2021, EGA began production of CelestiAL solar aluminium, produced with solar power from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park on the outskirts of Dubai. EGA is the first company in the world to make aluminium commercially using the power of the sun.
EGA was formed in 2014 through the merger of Dubai Aluminium and Emirates Aluminium.
EGA's Jebel Ali aluminium smelter began production as DUBAL in 1979. At almost five square kilometres, this site is five times bigger than Dubai Mall.
EMAL started production in 2009 and its Al Taweelah aluminium smelter was the largest single-site aluminium smelter in the world when completed. EGA's Al Taweelah site is five times bigger than Al Maryah Island at six square kilometres.
EGA has its own power stations at both sites in the UAE, producing electricity to meet its needs. EGA's electricity generation capacity is 6,474 megawatts, making EGA the third largest electricity generator in the UAE after the Dubai and Abu Dhabi utilities. EGA also produces water through desalination units at its power plants.
EGA began production at Al Taweelah alumina refinery in April 2019. EGA's alumina refinery is the first in the UAE and only the second in the Middle East. The project reduces the UAE's dependence on imported alumina and supplies over 49 per cent of EGA's needs.
Bauxite exports from Guinea Alumina Corporation, EGA's wholly-owned subsidiary in Guinea, began in August 2019. The GAC project was one of the largest greenfield investments in Guinea in over 40 years.

Majid and Lynn Jafar honoured by top US university
The University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School has honoured Majid Jafar, CEO of Crescent Petroleum, and his wife Lynn Barghout Jafar, co-founders of the Loulou Foundation, for their work in advancing medical research and innovation and for supporting children with special needs through the High Hopes Therapy Center in the UAE. The honorary doctorate degrees, presented at the university's 2025 Commencement ceremony by Chancellor Michael Collins, highlight their role in accelerating scientific and therapeutic progress in the field of rare diseases — an area that remains significantly underdiagnosed and underserved, with the vast majority of conditions still lacking approved treatments. More than 350 million people are affected by rare diseases worldwide, with 70% of them children. While over 7,000 rare diseases have been identified, 95% still lack approved treatments. Majid Jafar commented: 'We are deeply honoured by this recognition from UMass Chan Medical School. It affirms what can be achieved when purpose-driven collaboration meets urgency — especially in the field of rare diseases, where so many families are still waiting for new treatments. The UAE has long recognised the importance of medical innovation, and we remain committed to contributing to this global effort to improve children's lives and accelerate meaningful change.' Umass Chan Medical School is among the leading medical schools in the United States and last year entered into a strategic partnership agreement with Mohammed bin Rashid University (MBRU) of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dubai. The commencement ceremony also conferred honorary doctorate degrees on Dr Marcia McNutt, President of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and Dr Carolyn Clancy, Assistant Under Secretary for Health at the U.S. Veterans Health Administration. Lynn Barghout Jafar, co-founder of the Loulou Foundation and Founder of the High Hopes Therapy Center in Dubai, added: 'When our own daughter was diagnosed with a rare disease, what began as a personal journey quickly became a global mission to connect families and scientists in the pursuit of answers. We are grateful to be part of a growing community that is transforming the future of rare disease research through science, collaboration, and hope'. In March this year Majid and Lynn Jafar personally hosted a Charity Suhoor in support of Al Jalila Foundation's Child Fund in the UAE, raising Dh50 million — the largest donor-led fundraiser since the Foundation's inception in 2013. Held under the theme 'An Evening of Hope', the gathering brought together business leaders and philanthropists to support life-saving medical treatment and research for children in need. In addition to his work with Loulou Foundation which as supported more than 100 research projects in labs around the world since its founding in 2015, Majid Jafar co-chairs the international campaign for Cambridge Children's Hospital, serves on the advisory board of the Oxford-Harrington Rare Disease Centre — chaired by former UK Prime Minister David Cameron — and is a member of the Board of Fellows and co-chairs the Discovery Council at Harvard Medical School. In his professional capacity, in addition to serving as CEO of Crescent Petroleum, the Middle East's oldest private oil and gas company, Majid Jafar is the Board Managing Director of Dana Gas and Vice Chairman of the Crescent Group, headquartered in Sharjah in the UAE. Lynn Barghout Jafar established High Hopes Pediatric Therapy Center in 2017 as an early intervention facility in the UAE that caters to over 300 children with moderate to complex special needs - a place where they can develop, progress, and also have fun under the supervision of the most experienced and specialized therapists.

Abu Dhabi's XRG targets LNG and gas capacity of up to 25m tonnes a year by 2035
Adnoc's global energy investment arm XRG aims to have a gas and LNG business with capacity of between 20 to 25 million tonnes per annum by 2035 as it looks to scale up its operations globally. XRG's board, which includes Adnoc group managing director and chief executive Dr Sultan Al Jaber, former BP chief executive Bernard Looney and Blackstone's Jon Gray, approved a five-year business plan for the company on Monday. 'XRG is investing in the energy systems of the future – more integrated, more resilient, and responsive to global demand,' Dr Al Jaber, who is also the executive chairman of XRG, said. 'We are scaling platforms in gas, chemicals and energy solutions to drive long-term value and ensure energy remains a catalyst for sustainable growth and development.' XRG was launched last year as an international lower-carbon energy and chemicals investment company, with an enterprise value exceeding $80 billion. In December, President Sheikh Mohamed endorsed the appointment of the board of directors for the new unit. Other members of the board include Mohamed Alsuwaidi, UAE Minister of Investment and managing director and chief executive of Abu Dhabi's holding company ADQ, and Nassef Sawiris, the executive chair of OCI Global. The board 'supported the assessment of potential upstream gas M&A and LNG opportunities to strengthen its North American gas position", the statement said. Last month, the UAE made an announcement to increase the value of its investments in the US energy sector to $440 billion by 2035, from the current $70 billion, during US President Donald Trump's visit to the Gulf countries. That is part of the UAE's plan to invest $1.4 trillion in the country. XRG bought a stake in NextDecade's Rio Grande liquefied natural gas export facility in Texas last year along with other acquisitions in Mozambique and Turkmenistan. The board also endorsed the 'company's ambition to create a top-three global chemicals platform", the statement said. 'Subject to respective regulatory approvals, the proposed formation of Borouge Group International and the proposed acquisition of Covestro anchors an industry-leading portfolio across polyolefins, performance materials, and future speciality segments.' In December, XRG announced the acquisition of the German chemicals company Covestro for an enterprise value of €14.7 billion ($15.3 billion). In March, Adnoc also agreed to terms of a binding agreement with Austria's OMV to merge their polyolefins business and create a $60 billion Borouge Group International. The board also directed XRG through its Energy Solutions platform to expand its investments across the energy value chain "while continuing to develop select opportunities in carbon capture and storage and low-carbon fuels such as biofuels and low-carbon hydrogen that align with attractive return profiles". That comes amid growth in AI-linked power demand, particularly in the US, the statement added.
