Mumbai: The cabinet approved a proposal to extend the deadline till Dec 31, 2026, for taking loans from Asian Development Bank and New Development Bank for Metro-2A (Dahisar East-DN Nagar), 2B (DN Nagar-Mandala), and 7 (Andheri East-Dahisar East).
Loans of $1,075.7 million had been approved for the projects, of which $549.25 million was taken. Lines 2A and 7 have been commissioned, while work on Metro-2B is in progress. In all, 96 trains were to be acquired with the help of the loans, of which 60 trains have been received. tnn

Kolkata: Railway Board chairman Satish Kumar is scheduled to be in the city on Tuesday to review preparations for the upcoming Prime Ministerial event on Aug 22. A senior Railway Board official was in town on Monday to take stock of new Metro stretches which are due to be launched by PM Modi on Aug 22. East-West Metro's last leg (2.6 km Esplanade-Sealdah section), the Orange Line's Phase II (4.4 km Ruby-Metropolitan), and the Yellow Line's Phase I (the 7 km Noapara-Airport) may be flagged off by the PM. Braj Mohan Agrawal, member (traction and rolling stock), Railway Board, took stock of the readiness of the new stretches. Agrawal inspected the N-S Metro (Blue) Line, which has an interface with the Yellow Line at Noapara. He took a train ride from Jatin Das Park to Noapara. He inspected the 7-km Noapara to Jai Hind (airport) stretch of Yellow Line by taking a train ride between the two stations. He also inspected Airport metro station. Agrawal also visited the Noapara carshed, where he dedicated two Dalian Rakes MR 508 and MR 510 for passenger service. India emerges as top smartphone supplier to US; electronics manufacturing stands at ₹12 lakh cr: Vaishnaw

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday said India has become the top supplier of smartphones to the United States, with electronics manufacturing now worth ₹12 lakh crore. Highlighting the government's vision, Vaishnaw, addressing the inauguration ceremony of Metro projects in Bengaluru today, said that India's electronic production has grown six times in the last 11 Railway Minister further pointed out the exponential rise in electronic exports, which have increased eightfold to reach 3 lakh crore rupees. Vaishnaw also noted India's position as the world's second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones, underscoring the country's expanding role in the global electronics market. This growth reflects India's focus on becoming a global hub for technology production, making advanced electronics more widely available and supporting the Prime Minister's goal of inclusive access to technology for all citizens, Vaishnaw said. "Our electronic production has grown 6 times in the last 11 years. Today, electronics manufacturing has touched 12 lakh crore rupees. Electronic exports have increased by 8 times... Today, it has grown to 3 lakh crore rupees. India has become the second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world" he said According to official government data, India has made significant progress in mobile and electronics manufacturing, becoming the world's 2nd largest mobile manufacturing country. In 2014, India had only 2 mobile manufacturing units, but fast forward to today, the nation boasts over 300 manufacturing units, underscoring a significant expansion in this vital sector. In 2014-15 only 26% of the mobile phones which were being sold in India were made in India, the rest were being imported. It is worth mentioning that today, 99.2% of all mobile phones which are sold in India are made in India. The manufacturing value of mobile phones has surged from ₹18,900 crore in FY14 to a staggering ₹4,22,000 crore in FY24. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier today flagged off three Vande Bharat Trains - Ajni(Nagpur)-Pune Vande Bharat, KSR Bengaluru-Belgavi Vande Bharat and the Shree Mata Vaishnodevi Katra-Amritsar from KSR Bengaluru Railway station. With these additions, the total number of Vande Bharat trains in the country will rise to 150 (75 pairs), Vaishnaw posted on X.

BENGALURU: After an eight-year wait, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Bengaluru Namma Metro's much-awaited Yellow Line on Sunday, a key link aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity, particularly for commuters in the city's bustling IT hub. Part of Metro Phase 2, the 19.15 km stretch built at a cost of Rs 7,160 crore comprises 16 stations and expands the city's operational metro network to 96 km. The new line is expected to benefit over eight lakh daily commuters in south Bengaluru and increase the overall metro ridership to an estimated 12.5 lakh passengers per day. Commercial operations will commence on the Yellow Line from Monday (August 11). The PM also took a ride on the new Metro train from Ragigudda to Electronics City for which he purchased a ticket through QR code-enabled ticket vending machines. According to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the 16-station stretch will have a travel time of 35 minutes end-to-end, with halts at all stations. From Monday to Saturday, services will start at 6.30 am from both terminals. The last train from Bommasandra will leave at 10.42 pm, while the final service from RV Road will depart at 11.55 pm. Trains will operate every 25 minutes initially, with reduced frequency after 10 pm. On Sundays, services will begin at 7 am. BMRCL has stated that service frequency will increase after more train sets are inducted.
