Bills head athletic trainer Denny Kellington leaves for promotion with Panthers

USA Today15-02-2025
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Buffalo Bills associate athletic trainer Denny Kellington has moved on from the team. He was hired by the Carolina Panthers this week to serve as the team's vice president of player health and performance.
A promotion was well deserved for Kellington, who was credited with saving the life of safety Damar Hamlin by performing CPR after the Bills safety collapsed on the field in January of 2023.
Kellington was on the Bills' athletic training staff from 2017, starting as an assistant trainer and moving up to associate head trainer in 2023. Before that, he was on Syracuse University's athletic training staff for almost 12 years, serving as head athletic trainer of football for the final six years.
Kellington graduated from Oklahoma State University in 2000, where he returned in 2023 to make a commencement speech just four months after saving the life of Hamlin on national TV for the world to see.
'All the attention I've received for simply doing my job has been overwhelming,' Kellington said in his speech. 'I've said repeatedly that I am not a hero, but I will tell you what I was that day, I was ready.'
Because Kellington was ready on that particular night, Hamlin not only survived but he put together the best season of his career in 2024, starting 14 games and recording his first two career interceptions.
The remarkable story of Hamlin doesn't exist without Kellington. In 2023 Kellington received a vote for NFL MVP from the Associated Press, and he was among a crew of Bills training staff who were presented the Pat Tillman Award at the 2023 ESPYs from an emotional Hamlin.
The Panthers hired not only a well-experienced professional in his field, but also a life-saver who proved his worth on the world's biggest stage under the most possible pressure.
'When unexpected doors open, or life changes course, trust that your experiences have led you there and you will be ready,' Kellington said in his commencement speech at OSU. 'Understand this: small things done with passion and intention have the potential to make a lasting impact with ripple effects that you may never understand.'

Bears will play their starters in the final preseason game

The Bears will play their starters in the preseason finale Friday night against the Chiefs. Bears coach Ben Johnson told Kay Adams on Up & Adams that Caleb Williams and the rest of the team's healthy starters will play. 'We'll go ahead, and we'll play,' Johnson said. 'We'll see how long it is. We're going to get through a couple days here of practice, and we'll determine for how long, but we need to go through this.' Johnson hinted earlier this week that he would play the starters this week. Chiefs coach Andy Reid announced Monday that his starters would play some against the Bears. 'They'll start it off, for sure, and then we'll see how it goes from there,' Reid said. The Bears opened Sunday night's game against the Bills with their starters on the field. Williams and receivers Rome Odunze and DJ Moore each played 14 snaps. Williams was 6-of-10 for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Colts Make 'Dramatic Shift': Daniel Jones Named Week 1 Starter Over Anthony Richardson

Is the Anthony Richardson era officially over in Indianapolis? In a surprising move, the Colts have named Daniel Jones their Week 1 starter over the fourth-overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport called it a 'dramatic shift' for the Colts. Richardson struggled mightily in 2024 after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury during his rookie season, when he played only four games. Last year, Richardson completed just 47.7% of his passes for 1,814 yards, with eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 11 games. He was benched at one point before being reinserted into the starting lineup. Richardson also came under fire for tapping out of a game against the Houston Texans during a third-down play because he was fatigued. In two preseason games this year, Richardson completed nine of 14 passes for 94 yards and no touchdowns. According to IndyStar's Joel Erickson, Richardson completed 59.1% of his passes in training camp, compared to Jones' 68.8%. Jones, selected sixth overall by the New York Giants in 2019, signed a one-year, $14 million deal with the Colts this offseason as the Indianapolis front office sought to bring in competition for Richardson. The Giants released Jones last year after he went 2-8 in 10 games. In six seasons, he has a 24-44-1 record, completing 64.1% of his passes for 14,582 yards, 70 touchdowns and 47 interceptions. Xavier Worthy reacts to Taylor Swift's viral NFL draft reaction: 'That's crazy'

Taylor Swift, NFL draft scout? While most of the attention surrounding Swift's appearance on the "New Heights" podcast was focused on her relationship with Travis Kelce, the pop star also pointed out her excitement during the 2024 NFL Draft. Specifically, Swift detailed her elation about the Kansas City Chiefs' selection of Xavier Worthy with the 28th overall pick. On Tuesday, Worthy responded to the viral clip. "That's crazy," Worthy said. "I ain't gonna lie, she's the biggest pop star in this generation so it's crazy to have somebody running around the house screaming, 'We drafted you!'" The pick was only made possible after the Chiefs traded up with the Buffalo Bills, which became cause for celebration in the Swift residence. "I became like a person who was running through the halls of my house screaming, 'We drafted Xavier Worthy,'" Swift said. Kelce was a non-believer at first, saying that he wasn't sure if Swift had the right information. "I forget where I was, but you were the first person to tell me that we drafted the fastest man in the draft," Kelce said. Chiefs fans were given many reasons to be happy about the selection and their newest superfan wasted no time joining the crowd. "I was freaking out," Swift added. Worthy certainly proved to be a solid addition to the Kansas City offense in his rookie year, totaling 742 scrimmage yards and nine touchdowns on 79 touches – also proving to be someone that rose to the occasion in the postseason. Heading into his second season, the former Texas star will look to build off an impressive rookie year. Turns out, he'll be doing it with one of the world's biggest celebrities in his corner.
