CHENNAI
For the third day in succession, the AIADMK general secretary and leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, on Wednesday raised the issue of violence against women.
This time, he referred to reports in sections of the media regarding a department head in a dental college in Chennai subjecting women staff and students to sexual harassment and the absence of any action against the person concerned.
In a statement, he urged the DMK regime to explain its position with regard to the existence of the Internal Complaint Committee in the dental college.
'What has happened to the Vishakha Guidelines? Why has there been no action taken despite the lapse of one year after complaints were given by the affected students? On whose political pressure and intervention was there no action taken?' Mr. Palaniswami questioned, while adding that strong action should be taken against the guilty.

Convocation row: Scholar snubs Tamil Nadu governor; Annamalai hits at DMK for 'low-grade politics'

Photo/Agencies NEW DELHI: BJP leader K Annamalai on Wednesday criticised Tamil Nadu's ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ( DMK ) after a student, who is also reportedly the wife of a DMK leader, M Rajan, refused to receive her degree from the state governor during a convocation ceremony. "For ages, the deplorable dramas staged by DMK members to gain fame within the party have been strongly condemnable, especially for using educational institutions for such purposes," Annamalai said in a post on X. He added: "The chief minister must advise his party members not to bring the DMK's low-grade politics into educational institutions. There are more people in Tamil Nadu who dislike the DMK than those who support it. If they were to behave in the same manner, where would the Chief Minister hide his face?" The incident took place during the 32nd convocation ceremony of the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU), where students were lined up to receive their degrees from Tamil Nadu governor RN Ravi. One student, Jean Joseph, chose to bypass the governor and instead accepted her degree from vice chancellor Chandrasekar, who was standing beside him. Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Jean Joseph said: "Governor RN Ravi has been acting against the interests of Tamil Nadu and Tamils. I did not want to receive my degree from him," as quoted by news agency IANS.

Mass deletion of voters in Bihar under SIR anti-democratic : DMK

Chennai, Aug 13 (UNI) The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu today strongly condemned the Mass Deletion of about 65 lakh voters in poll-bound Bihar unilaterally by the Election Commission under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and termed it as anti-democratic. A resolution registering its strong objections and slamming the EC, an autonomous body which was mandated to ensure and free and fair poll, for deleting more than 65 lakh voters from the voter list. The Vote Chori (as exposed by Congress leader Rahul Gadhi) and mass deletions under SIR poses a serious threat in holding an free and fair election, it said, and stressed the fact tht voters list was the basic document for the election and that list should be prepared corrctly without any mistakes to ensure and free and fair election, it said. Even after massive protests by the DMK and the Opposition Congress-led INDIA bloc parties against the SIR aimed at destroying the election democracy and even after the Supreme Court warned of interference if there was "Mass Deletion", the EC for the reasons best known to it has deleted 65 lakh voters from the list. "It is an anti-democratic act that shakes the level playing field in the polls", the resolution said. It also strongly condemned the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre for arresting Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA Bloc leaders for taking out a march to ECI in protest against Vote Chori and Mass deletion of voters and registering FIRs against them. Anpther resolution expressed serious concern over the EC, despite being an autonomous body, acting hand in glove withthe BJP-led government at the Centrewith political colours and referred to the DMK MP delegation submitting a memorandum to the Chief Election Commissioner on July 17 stressing on five key points. "The ECI should accept the demands putforth by the DMK and ensure a free and fair election", it said. It may be recalled that Mr Stalin had Launching a blistering attack on the BJP and the EC and charged the saffron party with turning the poll watchdog, an autonomous statutory body, into its 'poll rigging machinery' as evidenced by the expose by Rahul Gandhi. Referring to the detention of INDIA bloc leaders, he said he stands shoulder to shoulder with his 'brother Rahul Gandhi' on the issue of seeking justice for vote theft. The Vote Theft evidence presented by RahulGandhi exposes the scale of this fraud. With elections due for the Tamil Nadu Assembly early next year and the DMK working on retaining power, Stalin is opposed to any kind of SIR of electoral roll in Tamil Nadu which the Election Commission is carrying out in Bihar. 'We demand the immediate release of complete machine readable voter rolls for every state, An end to politically driven deletions and An independent probe into this subversion of our democracy. DMK stands shoulder to shoulder in this fight. We will not watch in silence while the BJP robs India's democracy in broad daylight. #VoteChori #Rahul ExposesVoteChori,' Stalin posted. UNI GV 1440

Former AIADMK MP Maitreyan joins DMK, claims AIADMK alliance directed from Delhi

CHENNAI: Former AIADMK MP V. Maitreyan on Wednesday joined the DMK after meeting party president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin at Anna Arivalayam. However, the move has drawn backlash from DMK supporters on social media, with many alleging that he is essentially a loyalist to BJP ideology who has infiltrated Dravidian politics. A three-term Rajya Sabha MP from the AIADMK, Maitreyan began his political career with the BJP in the early 1990s and even held top positions in its Tamil Nadu state unit. He later joined the AIADMK, as he opposed the BJP forging an alliance with the DMK in 1999. In the AIADMK, he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha three times, in 2002, 2007 and 2013. After the death of J. Jayalalithaa, he sided with former CM O. Panneerselvam when the AIADMK split into two groups, a turn of events that led to Edappadi K. Palaniswami assuming the post of Chief Minister. He later joined the BJP again a couple of years ago before returning to the AIADMK in 2024. Palaniswami appointed him as the AIADMK's organising secretary. Speaking to reporters after joining the DMK, Maitreyan said, 'Under the leadership of Stalin, Tamil Nadu is developing on all fronts including education, per capita income and economic growth. Stalin is taking forward the state autonomy ideology of Kalaignar across the country and protecting the interests of all the states.'
