Murad celebrates 75 years of PFUJ's struggle
In his speech, he reaffirmed the historical significance of journalist unions in Pakistan, tracing their roots back to the establishment of the Sindh Union of Journalists in 1948 and underscoring the pivotal role they have played in advocating for the rights of journalists throughout the nation's tumultuous political history.
During his address, CM Shah praised the contributions of the late former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who bravely stood against authoritarianism, and acknowledged the sacrifices made by journalists in the face of oppression. He highlighted the struggles faced by media professionals in contemporary times, including economic hardships and delayed salaries, urging for immediate reforms to protect journalists' rights and enhance their working conditions.
Shah noted, 'Today's journalist faces a severe economic and professional crisis. Media organisations are under immense financial pressure, and many journalists go months without their salaries. When a journalist struggles to provide for their family, how can they raise their voice against injustice?'
The CM also paid tribute to the late Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, who was a steadfast advocate for press freedom. He recalled how she took concrete steps to address journalists' housing issues and led protests for media rights, reinforcing the PPP's commitment to supporting journalists at all costs. He stated, 'Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was the first national leader to take the journalists' housing problems seriously and acted decisively to find solutions. Her legacy is a testament to the importance of a free press in a democratic society.'
Additionally, the Chief Minister highlighted the current efforts of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who continues to advocate for media rights and the welfare of journalists. 'Under Chairman Bilawal's leadership, we are committed to taking practical measures that prioritise the well-being of journalists and ensure the financial independence of media houses,' he said. 'A strong, independent, and free press is crucial for a robust, sovereign, and democratic Pakistan.'

Bhitai's message echoes as 282nd Urs begins in Bhit Shah
The 282nd Urs of the revered Sufi saint and poet Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai (RA) began on Saturday morning in Bhit Shah, Matiari district, as tens of thousands of devotees flocked to the town to mark the occasion. Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi and Sindh Culture Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah officially inaugurated the three-day Urs by laying a chadar at Bhitai's shrine. Kundi said his philosophy of love, peace, and coexistence continues to guide humanity. Both the governor and the minister listened to renditions of Bhitai's devotional poetry at the shrine. Later, they inaugurated the cultural village at Shah Jo Bagh, visiting handicraft stalls and attending a folk music session. An event titled 'Sughrahn ji Kachehri' was also held at HT Surli Hall, where prominent folk artists performed Bhitai's verses in deeply expressive styles. Meanwhile, scholars and intellectuals offered insightful analyses of the saint's poetry, reaffirming Bhitai's profound legacy in Sindhi culture and spiritual thought.

PHOTO: JALAL QURESHI/EXPRESS Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Friday chaired a high-level meeting featuring prominent figures from the fields of media, sports, arts, and civil society to discuss preparations for this year's Independence Day celebrations, which will be held under the theme Marqa-e-Haq. Attendees at the meeting included senior members of CM Shah's cabinet, including Sharjeel Inam Memon, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Saeed Ghani, and Zulfiqar Shah. Also present were top government officials, including Secretary to CM Raheem Shaikh, Secretary General Administration Mohammad Ali Khoso, Secretary Information, and Secretary Culture Khair Mohammad. A host of well-known national personalities, such as social activist Faisal Edhi, squash legend Jahangir Khan, former cricketer Moin Khan, senior actors Mustafa Qureshi, Munawar Saeed and Ahmad Shah, veteran journalist Ghazi Salahuddin, and athletes, including former cricket captain Younis Khan and sprint champion Naseem Hameed, were also in attendance. Speaking on the occasion, CM Shah said this year's Independence Day celebrations are intended not only to mark the birth of the nation but also to commemorate Pakistan's enduring struggle for justice and truth. "This is not just a celebration of independence - it is a remembrance of our historical resistance to tyranny," he stated, calling on all intellectuals, artistes, and civil society leaders to contribute actively. He added that the purpose of involving celebrities and prominent figures is to seek their input and to encourage broad-based participation in this national celebration.
