National Day plans in motion

KUALA LUMPUR: Themed Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni (Prioritising the People), this year's National Day 2025 celebrations will feature an array of events, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
He said the National Day logo featuring Malaysia Madani will also be maintained until 2027.
'The theme portrays the government's priority to ensure the welfare of the rakyat will be emphasised,' he said when launching the theme and logo at Angkasapuri here yesterday.
Fahmi said National Day 2025 will commence with the launch event on July 25 in Muar, Johor, while the main event on Aug 31 will once again be held at Dataran Putrajaya.
To further strengthen the unity of the country's regions and states, Malaysia Day on Sept 16 will be held in Penang, he added.
'Choosing Penang as the venue is in line with the rotation practice among Sabah, Sarawak and states in the peninsula to further strengthen the unity among the territories and states,' he explained.
He also said that several programmes have been outlined leading up to the main event in August and September, including 1 Rumah 1 Jalur Gemilang, Merdeka Countdown, Quran Hour and Wayang Pacak Merdeka.
'The flying of the Jalur Gemilang campaign this year will see an addition of two new clusters – industry and government agencies – on top of five clusters from last year.
'This campaign is to encourage the rakyat to fly the Jalur Gemilang at their premises to show respect and care for the country,' said Fahmi, who is also the National Day and Malaysia Day Main Committee chairman.
He urged the public to support the grand celebrations nationwide.

Social media platforms remove 159,518 harmful content
PUTRAJAYA: Social media platforms Facebook, TikTok and YouTube have agreed to remove 159,518 pieces of content related to online gambling, scams, cyberbullying and fake news as of yesterday, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the figure is part of 174,473 online content takedown requests made so far this year. 'Of the total, nearly 160,000 pieces of content have been taken down, with 51 per cent involving online gambling, 25 per cent scams, 12 per cent cyberbullying and nine per cent fake news. 'Of these, 57 per cent were on Facebook, 28 per cent on TikTok, and 13 per cent on YouTube. Other platforms involved smaller numbers, but these three alone represent nearly 95 per cent of the overall problems we are seeing on social media,' he said at the Communications Ministry's monthly assembly at Menara Komunikasi here today. Present were Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching and secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, as well as Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin. Fahmi said that despite the ongoing efforts to remove such harmful content, there are growing concerns over the continued presence of child exploitation content online, particularly on Facebook. 'This raises the question of whether existing laws and cooperation are sufficient, or whether we need a more strategic and efficient approach to tackle the issue. 'We are aware that late last year, the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) conducted an integrated operation known as Op Pedo,' he said. On the government's move to implement a licensing framework for social media platforms earlier this year, Fahmi said the initiative aims to make digital platforms in Malaysia safer, especially for children. He added that the government's efforts have continued with the passing of the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024 in Parliament last December, which will be enforced soon. 'For everyone's information, the OnSA has received royal assent from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and is currently in the process of being enforced,' he said. The OnSA grants the MCMC the authority to take action against social media platforms that fail to fulfil their obligations.

Russia – Malaysia relations gaining new momentum, says Ambassador
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia remains a longstanding, reliable, and valued partner of Russia, with bilateral ties gaining renewed momentum, said Russian Ambassador to Malaysia Naiyl M. Latypov. Speaking at a reception marking Russia's National Day in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, Latypov said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and President Vladimir Putin had held extensive and constructive discussions during Anwar's recent visit to Russia. "This intensification of dialogue at the highest level clearly reflects the upward trajectory of our bilateral relations. Our cooperation spans a wide range of areas, including trade, investment, energy, tourism, education, and cultural and humanitarian exchange. "I hope that the motion along this trend will accelerate further, bringing more benefits to our nations," he said. Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani represented the government at the event. Also present was Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. According to Latypov, Russia-Malaysia cooperation is grounded in mutual respect and shared benefit, with both countries consistently striving to understand one another's perspectives and to act as true partners. "Our leaders' exchanges on regional and international matters have shown that the positions of Russia and Malaysia are closely aligned. "Both of our countries are firm in upholding the principles of international law, sovereignty, and non-interference in internal affairs. We also coordinate effectively at multilateral platforms, including the United Nations," he stated. As Malaysia holds the Asean Chairmanship this year, Latypov said Russia places great importance on its dialogue with the Association. Asean's centrality is founded on inclusiveness, transparency, and equality, with full respect for the identity and interests of all its members, he added. On BRICS, Latypov said Russia is committed to supporting Malaysia's smooth and effective participation in all BRICS partner formats. On Russia's national day, he noted this year holds special significance for Russians as the country solemnly marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War and the Second World War. Russia and Malaysia's diplomatic relations were established in 1967, marking nearly six decades this year. During Anwar's four-day official visit to Russia last month, Putin stated bilateral ties are developing successfully and progressively, with both sides expressing strong interest in making the cooperation more substantive and transparent.
