SGCA 2025 amps up cultural communication

Gulf Today21-07-2025
The Sharjah Government Media Bureau (SGMB) has announced the accreditation of three international institutions as official partners of the Sharjah Government Communication Award 2025 (SGCA), under the 'Partner Awards' categories that spotlight the important role of communication in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals.
The list of partners includes the Chief Sustainability Officers Network (CSO Network), a leadership platform focused on corporate sustainability; Asia House, a think tank specialising in driving commercial and political engagement between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe and the Alliance for African Partnership (AAP), a collaborative initiative supporting development across Africa led by Michigan State University and African institutions.
Through these partnerships, specialised categories have been introduced, with each partner nominating entities or initiatives it deems most deserving based on SGCA's criteria and its area of expertise.
Best Communication Practices Dealing with Development Advances (CSO Network):
Presented in partnership with the CSO Network, the award for 'Best Communication Practices Dealing with Development Advances' category recognises outstanding communication strategies implemented by government, private, or international organisations to address environmental, food security, and sustainable development challenges.

Eligible campaigns must creatively use the latest technologies, such as artificial intelligence, data analysis, and digital media, to foster awareness, influence behaviour, and generate tangible, lasting results. Topics may include environmental protection, food security, and sustainable consumption.
Award for Outstanding Development & Cultural Communication (Asia House & AAP):
Presented in partnership with Asia House and AAP, the 'Award for Outstanding Development & Cultural Communication' award honours regional initiatives that use communication to drive tangible, inclusive, and sustainable change.
This category includes two distinct subcategories, with 'Excellence in Communication for Sustainable Development' accredited by Asia House, recognises communication-driven initiatives from Southeast Asia that foster economic, social, cultural, or environmental progress.
Eligible projects should show clear, measurable results in improving education, healthcare, environmental practices, or community resilience. Collaboration and the creative use of traditional and digital media to unite communities are central evaluation factors.
The second subcategory in collaboration with AAP and its academic and research partners across Africa, is the 'Excellence in Communication for Food Security and Quality of Life' which acknowledges communication programmes that have made a measurable difference in rural development, agriculture, and food systems. Submissions should demonstrate how the initiative empowered farmers or youth, increased awareness around food security, and implemented innovative methods to create lasting community impact.
Driving communication that transforms communities:
Commenting on the newly formed international partnerships, Alia Al Suwaidi, Director of SGMB, said: 'Communication is no longer just about delivering messages, it is a force for change that strengthens social cohesion and advances humanitarian goals. The new categories highlight communication models addressing global challenges like food security, environmental sustainability, and cultural inclusion and aim to create new opportunities for impactful communication to gain visibility and influence.'
"We are proud to partner with the SGCA on the 'Best Communication Practices Dealing with Development Advances' award," said Dr. Yasar Jarrar, CSO Network Secretary General. "This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to spotlighting how strategic communication can accelerate sustainability and innovation. At CSO Network, we believe that the right narrative has the power to transform development outcomes and this award will honour those who are shaping the future through bold, effective, and visionary communication."
Michael Lawrence OBE, Chief Executive at Asia House, said: 'Asia House is proud to partner with SGCA 2025 to spotlight the vital role communication plays in shaping inclusive and sustainable development. By recognising initiatives that foster economic and social progress across Southeast Asia, we aim to promote collaboration and inspire innovation to tackle the region's most pressing challenges.'
'During SGCA 2025, the important role of communication in advancing food security and improving quality of life across Africa will be highlighted, said Titus Awokuse, Vice Provost and Dean International Studies and Programmes, Michigan State University & SGCA Conference Speaker. 'Effective communication empowers communities, fosters knowledge sharing, and supports sustainable rural development, which are key elements for creating positive change on the continent.'

Arada targets Dh15b in 2025 sales amid soaring demand for premium homes

Arada is forecasting a record-breaking year in 2025, setting its sights on Dh15 billion in full-year sales as demand for high-end residential property continues to gain momentum across the UAE. The Sharjah-based master developer reported Dh9.15 billion in sales during the first half of the year, more than tripling its performance from the same period in 2024 and marking a 336 per cent year-on-year increase. The strong half-year results were driven by a surge in interest in Arada's communities in both Dubai and Sharjah, where a total of 2,382 homes were sold during the first six months of 2025 — up 247 per cent from the same period last year. Among the top-performing projects were Akala, a wellness-focused residential destination launched in Dubai in May, and Masaar 2 in Sharjah, a 2,000-unit villa and townhouse development that sold out within three hours of its February launch. Buoyed by this momentum, Arada aims to launch three more large-scale developments before the end of 2025, adding nearly 5,000 new homes to its growing portfolio. The developer is also on track to deliver 2,000 completed homes by year-end, reflecting a balanced focus on both off-plan sales and project handovers. Property market experts said Arada's projected sales target of Dh15 billion would mark its highest annual sales figure since inception—underscoring both the brand's market positioning and the sustained strength of the UAE's property sector. Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal, executive vice chairman of Arada, attributed the company's success to its long-term vision and commitment to building people-centric communities. 'We have always believed that when people and spaces connect with purpose, the results can be transformational,' he said. 'The exceptional performance we've seen in the first half of the year proves that a people-first strategy delivers consistent and meaningful value for residents and investors.' Group CEO Ahmed Alkhoshaibi said Arada's growth strategy includes both domestic and international expansion. 'We're building on the excellent sales results from the first half by introducing new projects across the UAE in the second half of the year. At the same time, we're preparing to launch our first ventures in Australia, and continue to explore new partnerships and opportunities globally.' Earlier this month, Arada further strengthened its financial base by successfully completing a $450 million sukuk issuance, its second visit to global debt capital markets in recent years. The company's strong performance is aligned with broader trends in the UAE property market. In Sharjah, the value of property transactions rose by 48 per cent in the first half of 2025 to Dh27 billion, according to figures from the Sharjah Real Estate Registration Department. In Dubai, real estate sales reached Dh431 billion over the same period, up 25 per cent year-on-year, reflecting the city's continued appeal to both regional and international buyers. Since its founding in 2017, Arada has launched nine major projects in Sharjah and Dubai and currently holds a pipeline of developments in the UAE and Australia valued at more than Dh90 billion. To date, the company has sold over 17,000 residential units valued at more than Dh29 billion and has completed more than 10,000 homes.

Africa unveils landmark integrity & equity principles and coordination platform to strengthen carbon markets

NAIROBI, Kenya -/African Media Agency (AMA)/-The African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) today announced a series of bold initiatives to elevate Africa's role in global carbon markets and ensure they deliver both climate and development benefits for the continent. The announcements were made at a high-level continental dialogue convened in collaboration with the Government of Kenya and Afreximbank. The consultation opened with statements from H.E. Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Republic of Kenya; Ambassador Ali Mohamed, Kenya's Special Climate Envoy; Neil Wigan OBE, British High Commissioner to Kenya; and Estherine Fotabong, Director of Programme Innovation and Planning at AUDA-NEPAD — reflecting strong political and institutional commitment to Africa's emerging leadership in carbon markets. The United Kingdom is supporting these efforts as a key technical partner to AUDA-NEPAD, including through the secondment of UK climate expert Ravi Raichoora to the agency. Throughout the consultation, AUDA-NEPAD engaged directly with senior representatives from African Union member states, including Madagascar, Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, and the DRC, who shared their experiences, challenges, and aspirations in navigating carbon markets. Member States emphasised the vital role AUDA-NEPAD can play — leveraging its continental mandate to promote greater cohesion, alignment, and technical support across the region. In parallel, perspectives from global standard-setters such as the VCMI and ICVCM, rating agencies like BeZero, and leading project developers offered valuable insights into how African priorities can be better reflected in global frameworks. At the event, AUDA-NEPAD unveiled three major outcomes designed to advance Africa's carbon market ambitions: The African Integrity & Equity Principles for Carbon Markets — a pioneering framework articulating Africa's vision for high-integrity, socially inclusive carbon markets. These principles, which will be shaped through broad stakeholder engagement, place social value at the core of market participation. A draft will be presented for formal consultation at the Africa Climate Summit 2 in Addis Ababa (9–12 September). A Continental Coordinating Mechanism — comprising technical experts and focal points from across the 55 AU Member States and regional carbon market alliances. This mechanism will reduce fragmentation, promote shared priorities, and strengthen Africa's collective voice in global carbon market negotiations, thereby fostering a more coherent, transparent, and investable environment. A Digital Tracking Platform for Article 6 Readiness — currently under development, this tool will offer real-time insights into country-level progress. It will enable governments, the private sector, and development partners to identify opportunities, monitor implementation, and direct capacity-building support where most needed. In addition, the platform will support the development of a continent-wide glossary of carbon market terminology, enhancing consistency and alignment with international best practices. The event also featured strong engagement from the private sector, including project developers, advisory firms, and rating agencies. Private actors and Member State representatives alike welcomed these three key outcomes as critical enablers to unlock Africa's carbon potential. Tijani Nwadei, Partner and Co-founder of Visuias Limited, a carbon markets advisory firm, underlined the importance of AUDA-NEPAD's coordinating role in catalysing participation, enabling benefit-sharing, and supporting the actualisation of a market that places Africa at the forefront of global supply. Andrew Ocama, Coordinator for the Eastern Africa Alliance on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance, welcomed AUDA-NEPAD taking on a leading coordination role for carbon markets across the continent, emphasising that such leadership is essential to prevent fragmentation and ensure coherent regional implementation. El-hadj Mbaye, Africa's lead negotiator for Article 6, called on Member States to take an active role in understanding and engaging in carbon markets, stressing that Africa must shape the future of carbon finance — not simply participate in it.
