Allisha Gray Returns as Reigning Champion
Allisha Gray enters as the Skills Challenge defending champion after winning last year's event with a time of 32.1 seconds. She went on to make history by capturing the 3-Point Contest title on the same night. The Atlanta Dream star currently averages 18.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game – all career highs. She was voted a 2025 All-Star starter, the first of her career, after leading all guards in player and media rankings.
Gray's season has been one filled with milestones, from notching her first 30-point game and connecting on her 300th career three-pointer, to currently leading the league in three-point percentage. She's earned multiple Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors and was named Player of the Month for both May and June. Following her sweep of both the Skills Challenge and 3-Point Contest in 2024, Gray enters this year's competition with an opportunity to repeat in both events.
Skylar Diggins prepares for first WNBA Skills Challenge
Skylar Diggins is leading the Seattle Storm as they continue to adjust to life without WNBA and franchise legend Sue Bird, who retired following the 2022 season. The Storm currently sit third in the Western Conference, boasting the W's fourth-best overall record (14-9), while Diggins, currently in her 11th WNBA season, paces Seattle as its leading scorer (17.5 PPG), shooting 43% from the field with 5.8 assists and 1.1 steals per game. Despite it being her first Skills Challenge appearance, the 34-year-old is the longest-tenured WNBA player competing.
The veteran missed the 2023 season due to maternity leave after participating in the 2022 All-Star Game while pregnant. Now back and healthy, the seven-time All-Star and six-time All-WNBA player has the opportunity to compete in her home state of Indiana, where she already has plenty of history on the court. A standout at Notre Dame, Diggins led the Fighting Irish to three consecutive Final Fours and two NCAA championship appearances, etching herself in South Bend history. Capturing a Skills Challenge victory would mark yet another milestone in her storied career.

Liberty star Breanna Stewart has bone bruise in her right knee and is out indefinitely

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart has a bone bruise in her right knee and the team has no timetable for her return, coach Sandy Brondello said Wednesday. 'We want to make sure she's right for the playoffs,' Brondello said before the Liberty played the Minnesota Lynx in a WNBA Finals rematch. 'But hopefully, we can get her back sooner than that.' A two-time WNBA MVP, Stewart was hurt early in the Liberty's 101-99 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday night. She had three points and a rebound. Stewart seemed to injure the leg while running up the court and exited about 3 1/2 minutes into the game. She went to the locker room and never returned to the bench. A seven-time All-Star, Stewart is averaging 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists. New York owned the second-best record in the WNBA at 17-8 entering Wednesday's matchup and trailed the Lynx by four games. ___ AP WNBA:

Dream star Brittney Griner ejected from win over Wings after arguing, bumping official

Atlanta Dream star Brittney Griner was tossed early in the second half from their 88-85 win over the Dallas Wings on Wednesday night after getting into it with an official. Griner was fighting for a rebound with Haley Jones and was called for a foul in the third quarter at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas. Griner seemed to own up to pretty quickly with Jones, and patted her on the back while helping Jones keep her balance. But Griner then approached the official who called her for the foul and started arguing with her, which quickly earned her a technical foul. Griner then followed that official and made contact with her while continuing to argue the call, which automatically drew the second technical foul and resulted in her ejection. Griner was pulled back and walked off the court almost immediately. Griner had four points and four rebounds when she was thrown out. Griner entered the night averaging a career-low 10.9 points and 5.6 rebounds per game this season, her first with the Dream after spending her first 12 years in the league with the Phoenix Mercury. The Dream held just a one-point lead at the time that Griner was ejected, and they pushed that to eight points early in the fourth quarter. The Wings, however, responded with an 11-2 burst after that, and held Atlanta scoreless for nearly four minutes, to get right back in the game. But it was a huge 3-pointer from Naz Hillmon with less than three seconds left that finally sealed the win for the Dream. Paige Bueckers led the Wings with 21 points and seven assists in the loss. Luisa Geiselsoder added 13 points, and Jones finished with 12 points. The Wings now hold just an 8-20 record with the loss, which was their third in four games. The lone win in that span came in a 10-point upset over the Liberty on Monday. Hillmon led the Dream with 21 points off the bench after she shot 5-of-7 from behind the arc. Allisha Gray added 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds. The Dream now sit at 16-11 on the season, which is the second-best record in the Eastern Conference only behind the Liberty. They'll be back in action on Friday against the Mercury.

Lynx hang on to beat Liberty in WNBA Finals rematch as star Breanna Stewart is ruled out indefinitely

New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart will be sidelined indefinitely due to a bone bruise in her right knee, coach Sandy Brondello confirmed Wednesday. While the specifics of her injury are now known, it's unclear how long she'll be sidelined. Brondello did not have a timeline for Stewart's return, and the Liberty star was not available for the team's matchup with the Minnesota Lynx on Wednesday. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] "We want to be smart with it," Brondello said before the game, via ESPN. "If we can get her back at the end of August, I think that's great. It's big-picture ... so when she's ready. But keep it fresh for the playoffs. I know she'll be back before then. How early she gets back before the end of the [regular] season, I don't know.' Stewart went down in the opening minutes of the Liberty's matchup with the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday. She awkwardly pulled up and started walking around with the apparent non-contact injury. She made an immediate call to come out of the game and was ruled out at halftime. She hasn't played since. For a long time, the nature of Stewart's injury was unclear. Initial imaging revealed the absence of a significant injury, which was a good sign. But Brondello said Monday that the team didn't actually know what part of Stewart's leg was hurt. While there still isn't a timetable for her return, knowing the nature of the injury is a step in the right direction. Stewart is averaging 18.3 points and 6.5 rebounds this season. The two-time league MVP hadn't missed a game all year before this injury. Lynx win WNBA Finals rematch Without Stewart available, the Liberty simply couldn't keep up with the Lynx on Wednesday night in Minneapolis. The Lynx held on late to grab a 100-93 win to keep their lead in the league standings and improve to an incredible 15-1 on their home floor. They are now a perfect 5-0 following a loss this season, too. After ending the first quarter all tied up, the Lynx closed the first half on a quick 7-0 burst to take a nine-point lead into the break. Star Napheesa Collier put up 19 points in the first 20 minutes alone, too, after shooting 7-of-10 from the field. Though the Liberty kept it within single digits entering the final period, the Lynx opened the fourth quarter on an 8-3 burst to take control of the game right back. While the Liberty rattled off a huge 11-0 run of their own over a nearly two-minute span late in the quarter, which cut the game back to just four points, Collier sealed the win and responded perfectly. She drove straight to the rim and converted a tough and-one layup to end their dry spell and seal the seven-point win. Sabrina Ionescu led the Liberty with 31 points, 12 of which came in the fourth quarter, and four rebounds in the loss. Isabelle Harrison added 15 points off the bench, and Marine Johannes finished with 14 points. The Liberty still hold the second best record in the league behind the Lynx, though they sit at 17-9 on the year and have now lost three straight — which is their longest losing skid of the season and their first such losing streak since the 2022 season. Collier finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lynx. It was her fifth 30-point night of the season, which is tied for the most in the league, and her second-straight. Kayla McBride added 24 points, and Alanna Smith finished with 12 points. They shot 15-of-31 from behind the arc as a group, too. The win pushed the Lynx to 23-5 on the season. While Stewart missed this contest, the two teams will square off in three straight games in mid-August. As long as she's able to make it back on the court by then, starting with the first matchup on Aug. 10, the mini series between last year's two WNBA Finals teams should be incredibly entertaining.
