Tesla's sales are stalling as demand for EVs soars. Is Musk the problem?
While electric vehicle (EV) sales in the U.S. are reaching record highs, Tesla is charting a different course.
That is one of the key findings from a new analysis by Motointegrator, conducted in collaboration with the research experts at DataPulse Research. Tesla's market share is falling, and investor confidence is also waning-but it is not because drivers are anti-electric. On the contrary, EV sales overall are rising, with electric vehicle sales in the U.S. up 11% for the same period.
Tesla's technology has always led the pack. So, could the problem be less about motoring and more to do with CEO Elon Musk's high-profile political career? Tesla's outlier status has coincided with Musk's increasingly visible role in U.S. politics, suggesting that declining sales and loss of ground to competitors could be part of a deeper brand backlash.
EV Sales Are Accelerating-Just Not at Tesla
New data shows that Tesla's decline is specific to its brand. In Q1 2025, Tesla's U.S. sales dropped by 9% year-over-year, while competitors experienced substantial growth. Porsche (+249%), Toyota (+196%), GMC (+183%), and Volvo (+173%) led with triple-digit increases. Legacy automakers like Chevrolet (+114%), Ford (+12%), and Volkswagen (+55%), also outpaced Tesla.
Among the top five EV brands, which together accounted for two-thirds of all EV sales this year, Tesla's performance stands out as the exception.
Tesla's Market Share and Financial Standing
Tesla's grip on the U.S. EV market is loosening. In Q1 2025, its market share fell to 43.2%, down from 52.7% the previous year-a 9.5-point decline. No other automaker came close to this level of loss. While Tesla lost ground, Chevrolet gained 3.1 points, Toyota and Porsche each climbed by more than 1 point, and other brands like GMC, VW, and Subaru made notable gains.
Investors, expressing concerns about Musk's divided focus, are taking notice. Tesla's stock has experienced a significant decline, dropping approximately 46% from its peak of $479.86 on Dec. 17, 2024, to $284.82 by May 9, 2025. In the first quarter of 2025, Tesla reported a 71% decrease in net income, falling to $409 million, and a 9% drop in revenue to $19.3 billion. This downturn reflects growing reputational challenges. In the U.S., protests and boycotts have emerged, with movements like "Tesla Takedown" urging consumers to divest from the company.Despite these issues, some investors remain optimistic about Tesla's future, citing upcoming product launches like a more affordable EV model. However, the company's ability to navigate political controversies, restore consumer trust, and maintain competitiveness in the rapidly evolving EV market remains to be seen.
Global Losses Reflect a Broader Shift
Tesla's struggles are not limited to the U.S. The company's European sales have dropped sharply in Q1 2025, despite surging EV demand. Competitors like Volkswagen, Renault, Ford, Citroën, and BYD more than doubled their registrations in February, leading to significant erosion of Tesla's regional market share.
What is happening in Europe echoes the message from the U.S.: Tesla may not simply be lagging, it may be losing relevance among the very consumers driving the EV transition.
American and European Consumers Have Soured on Musk
There are several factors driving Tesla's decline, but consumer sentiment appears to play a key role. Recent U.S. public opinion polls underscore this point: Elon Musk's approval ratings dropped sharply following his endorsement of Donald Trump in mid-2024. By early 2025, disapproval had overtaken approval.
A similarly recent YouGov poll showed Musk with near-universal name recognition (98%) but only 30% popularity-a sign that with fame comes not just visibility, but stronger opinions. This backlash mirrors European sentiments, where large majorities in Germany (73%) and the U.K. (69%) have labelled Musk's insertion into politics as "unacceptable."
Promise Made, Promises Kept-Musk's Policy, Politics, and Economic Impact
Musk's political role extends beyond public statements. As President Trump's appointed head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk argued that short-term hardship would lead to long-term prosperity.
In practice, however, DOGE policies have led to aggressive austerity measures. In March 2025, Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported 275,240 job cut announcements, with 216,670 directly attributed to DOGE actions-the third-highest monthly total in recorded U.S. history, surpassed only by the first two months of the COVID-19 crisis.
Musk's economic agenda is being felt at the household level. According to the University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Index, consumer sentiment has cratered to levels not seen since the peak of post-pandemic inflation, reflecting deep anxiety among households about personal finances, business conditions, unemployment, and inflation.
Notably, the unease cuts across party lines. Since February, Republicans, Independents, and Democrats alike have reported worsening expectations for their finances, employment prospects, and the broader economy. With each new policy shift, consumers are bracing for more economic hardship.
Conclusion: Tesla at a Turning Point
In less than a year, Tesla has gone from market leader to cautionary tale, with falling sales, a loss of market share, and declining investor confidence both at home and abroad. What was once a brand synonymous with innovation is now inseparable from Elon Musk's public profile as a powerful far-right political figure. If the first months of 2025 are any indication, Musk's attempt to fuse corporate power with political authority may be backfiring: with consumers, markets, and even longtime fans turning away. The question now is not whether Tesla can regain ground-it is whether Musk can.

Wilbur Ross, former Commerce Secretary and a key architect of Trump's first-term trade policy, describes Trump's current tariff strategy as a deliberate evolution: moving faster, hitting harder, and using broader executive powers to impose tariffs for both economic and diplomatic leverage. The Trump administration's use of tariffs has sparked debate over the ultimate goals of its economic strategy. However, a former Cabinet member and key trade advisor to the President has suggested there is an underlying logic to the approach. Since winning the Oval Office, President Trump has announced an evolving range of policies. with economic sanctions spinning higher on some trade partners while others have been granted pauses. Many of the announcements have not come through official White House channels; for example, Trump threatened a 50% tariff on the EU in April in a bid to get European negotiators to the table—by posting on his social media site, Truth Social. Indeed, Trump has come under scrutiny from Beijing, arguably the most critical region for the U.S. to make a deal, who claim America's tariff tactics have been 'coercion and blackmail' when instead it should 'convey information to the Chinese side…through relevant parties.' But Wilbur Ross, Trump's Commerce Secretary in his first administration, says there's a clear tactic at play beneath Trump's bluster. The 87-year-old banker turned D.C. power player said there is an 'art' to Trump's dealmaking, as White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has suggested; Ross told Fortune in an exclusive interview: 'Well, everybody's reaction to [tariffs] was first shock and amazement, but the actual retaliatory measures that they put in were fairly modest—even China didn't match in dollar for dollar. 'There's a real reason for that, I think the other countries, as they've thought about it, have recognized that while they have to talk very bravely for their domestic political constituencies… They also recognize that at the end of the day, they can't afford a tit-for-tat escalating trade war with us.' And this was a fact Trump was relying on, continued Ross: 'One of the earliest things he put in was that 10% tariff on everything from everywhere. 'Nobody is even complaining about that anymore. When you think about it, in the normal course, getting quietly to do a 10% tariff on everything from everywhere was a huge achievement, even if he didn't get anything else. But because he followed it with these much more extreme things, it makes the 10% look like it's not such a big bother. 'But it's a huge number, and he's been collecting it every day.' Indeed, imported goods alone into the U.S. in 2024 stood at $3.36 trillion—even before tax, duties, and levies were collected (worth $82 billion) and before imported services are added to those figures. Even 10% of near-$3.4 trillion is an eye-watering sum to add to federal budgets, though some items like autos and steel are even higher. Indeed nations like China, Canada, and Mexico are all already subject to more than the baseline 10% universal tariff. When Ross spoke to Fortune in a previous exclusive interview earlier this year, he said President Trump would be all the more confident in his second term because he now better understands the inner workings of Washington, D.C., and has a stronger mandate courtesy of a solid election sweep. And President Trump's tactics, which have included everything from threatening a 25% hike on Apple's iPhones specifically to raising sanctions to more than 150% on China at some points, reflect the path Ross expected. After all, as Secretary, Ross was one of the key allies in Trump's team when renegotiating America's position on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). At the time, Trump was a fierce critic of the deal with Mexico and Canada and wanted to withdraw from the agreement and begin negotiating from there. Ross felt the better tactic was to threaten such action and keep an exit as a last resort, an opinion that Trump eventually came around to agreeing with. Likewise, having been appointed in 2017 Ross oversaw the tariff action in the first Trump administration which included sanctions on Chinese goods as well as aluminum and steel more widely. 'He has started out on a much more adventurous path than last time,' Ross told Fortune this week. 'Broader in scope and more extreme in terms of the numbers themselves.' Trump has three objectives, he adds: shrinking trade deficits, producing revenue to offset his 'One Big, Beautiful Bill' and achieving other diplomatic purposes such as the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. and global defense spending. 'He has a much more fulsome, much more complicated agenda than before,' Ross explains. 'It's also different in…that last time I was very careful to set the groundwork to do public hearings, stakeholder meetings, to do written reports, to set a whole record so that under the Administrative Procedures Act we would be relatively safe from people trying to knock it out in court. 'This time, they did a very different thing. They went in mostly just by his say so using the IFA, the Emergency Powers Act, and they ran into a snag at the Court for International Trade.' This snag may alter the course of tariff reaction on the account of businesses, he added, because their investment timelines may shift based on when the tariffs are legally approved. But Ross added: 'Most people are operating under the assumption that sooner or later, he'll get something like what he was looking for…and therefore, while it's slowed down a bit, [I] don't think it will derail [trade talks] because [foreign governments] also know there are other ways he could punish them rather than just the tariffs. Tesla updated the Model S and Model X today, but any significant changes are hard to spot. Many of the upgrades lie hidden beneath the familiar-looking exteriors, with Tesla making several minor tweaks to the cars that fail to enhance their appeal in the increasingly competitive luxury EV segment. Tesla claims the new S and X are 'even quieter inside,' with less wind and road noise paired with more effective noise cancellation. Inside, Tesla adds dynamic ambient lighting while increasing third-row passenger and cargo space in the Model X. Oh, and the yoke is still available as an $1,000 option on the Plaid variants. The Model S Plaid has fresh exterior styling that Tesla says is optimized for high-speed stability, but the updated car has a lower top speed than its predecessor. It's down from 200 miles per hour to 149 mph—a huge drop. At least it can still hit 60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds. Tesla also has new wheel designs for the sedan and SUV, which improve aerodynamics and increase range. Tesla Model S and Model X Range Gains The updates have resulted in Tesla creating its longest-range EV ever—the Model S Long Range. The sedan can travel up to 410 miles on a charge, according to the company, while the Model S Plaid improves to 368 miles. The Model X can now go up to 38 miles more than before—352—while the Plaid gets a 21-mile bump in range to 335. Photo by: Tesla Mild Updates, Fresh New Price Despite the mediocre enhancements to the updated Model S and Model X, Tesla is now charging $5,000 extra across both trims of each car. The Model S now costs $86,630, while the Model S Plaid starts at $101,630. If you want the crossover, you'll pay $91,630 for the Model X with all-wheel drive and $106,630 for the high-performance Plaid variant. Genesis Magma Racing Unveils 2026 Le Mans Hypercar and European Expansion Plans

Last year, Genesis, the luxury brand from Hyundai, announced its motorsport arrival with Genesis Magma Racing. Ahead of the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans this weekend, GMR revealed its roadmap for its 2026 Le Mans debut in the legendary racing series top hypercar division. Highlighting its ambitious plans, Genesis twin announcements provided updates on its LeMans team and the brand's expansion across key European markets. GMR team principal Cyril Abiteboul announced key milestones in the development of the GMR-001 Hypercar, namely that it will be powered by a newly developed V-8 engine derived from Hyundai's WRC technology. Essentially two of the 1.6-liter inline-four cylinder engines from the Hyundai N world rally team will be fused together to create the GMR-001's V-8. New Race Base in France Along with the engine update, the team also confirmed a new strategic operations base in Le Castellet, France, near racing partner Oreca, for seamless collaboration and vehicle development. 'The team is being created from very strong parts. A strong chassis from Oreca; an ideal Race Base location in Le Castellet; an international, experienced team of people from around motorsport; and, of course, the best of the influences from Korean culture to drive us all forward at Hyperspeed,' said Abiteboul. The team also announced key additions to GMR leadership; Anouck Abadie as team manager, Justin Taylor as chief engineer, and Gabriele Tarquini as sporting director. These seasoned leaders aim to steer the team through the rigorous World Endurance Championship (WEC) by 2026 and the IMSA SportsCar Championship by 2027. Genesis Expands to Four New European Markets Genesis emphasized its European expansion with plans to enter markets in France, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands by 2027. Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke positioned Genesis Magma Racing as more than a motorsport initiative, describing it as an extension of Genesis's design philosophy and cultural identity. 'Our entry into these important markets is a pivotal moment for Genesis. We are moving now to deepen our long-term presence and commitment across Europe. This is the most significant market expansion since we launched in Europe in 2021 and is the start of our next phase of measured, strategic growth, and sporting brand direction' said Xavier Martinet, managing director of Genesis Motor Europe. 'Our distinctive electric models have strong European appeal and the demand is growing. With these new markets, and our audacious approach to motorsport, we look forward to introducing new customers to our design-driven performance brand.' While Genesis did not share all the models it intends to sell in these new markets, it confirmed the all-electric GV60 compact SUV, and electric GV70 SUV and G80 luxury sedan will be available in the four countries, starting in early 2026. And now it's time to go racing... While Genesis' factory effort in the top class of endurance racing will debut next year, GMR will be represented this year by endurance racing veteran and three-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, André Lotterer, who joins rising stars Jamie Chadwick and Mathys Jaubert in the #18 IDEC LMP2 racecar, which qualified in fourteenth position.
