Roma working on loan deal for Manchester United's Jadon Sancho

Roma are working on a loan deal to sign Manchester United's Jadon Sancho. The Serie A side have made an offer for the England international but there is an acknowledgement that it would be a tricky deal to complete. Roma are also in talks to sign Aston Villa's Leon Bailey on loan as they look to add to their attacking options. Advertisement The Athletic reported on June 10 that Borussia Dortmund had expressed their interest to Sancho's representatives over a return to the club United paid £73million (now $98.9m) to sign him from in the summer of 2021. Sancho had options in England and around Europe that he was expected to explore before making a decision on his next step. His United contract runs until next June, with the option of a further year. The 25-year-old spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Chelsea, where he made 42 appearances. Chelsea's agreement with United last summer included an obligation to make the move permanent for £25m. The clause was triggered in April when it was mathematically guaranteed that Chelsea could not finish lower than 15th in the Premier League. However, Chelsea did not agree personal terms with Sancho and exercised the option to pay £5m to send him back to United. He scored five goals and provided ten assists during his time at Stamford Bridge, helping the side win the Conference League and finish fourth in the Premier League. Sancho was one of five United first-team players left out of their pre-season tour squad, alongside Marcus Rashford — who has since joined Barcelona on loan — Tyrell Malacia, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony. The group were asked not to report for training until after 5pm, after Ruben Amorim and the rest of the first-team group had left Carrington, earlier this summer. Sancho has played 83 games for United, with his last appearance for the club in the 2024 Community Shield against rivals Manchester City, when he came on as a substitute. He only made three appearances for United in 2023-24 after a public disagreement with then-head coach Erik ten Hag, resulting in him being excluded from the squad and re-join Dortmund on loan in January 2024. Roma finished fifth in Serie A last season and will play in the Europa League this term under new head coach Gian Piero Gasperini. Spot the pattern. Barca execs agree to risk €7m in personal wealth in bid to register Rashford, Garcia

Follow live updates from the summer transfer window as the new Premier League season edges ever closer Getty Images Barcelona's board agreed to take emergency financial action at a meeting yesterday as the club continues to try to register their new signings in time to start their La Liga title defence on Saturday. With three days to go before Barca's first match of the 2025-26 campaign, Hansi Flick's major signings of the summer — including new goalkeeper Joan Garcia and Manchester United loanee striker Marcus Rashford — are still not eligible to play. Because Barca have been overspending on their salary limit — calculated by La Liga for each club according to their revenue — they have not been able to register new players. Now, in an attempt to ease the situation, Barca executives have prepared the action of putting their own personal wealth at risk as part of a bank guarantee worth €7million (£6m, $8.2m). GO FURTHER Barcelona board agree to risk €7m in personal wealth in bid to register Rashford, Garcia Getty Images That is the question on everyone's lips after a few days of speculation for the Italy goalkeeper. It looks like he will be on the move away from PSG, who won the UEFA Super Cup last night with a penalty shootout win over Tottenham Hotspur, following their signing of talented youngster Lucas Chevalier. Subscriber Petter C. asks: 'Chelsea are in need of a goalkeeper and Donnarumma seems to be available. Are there any possibilities of a deal here?.' A very valid question... send yours to: live@ Now for one from Europe, more specifically Italy's Serie A. Alvaro Morata has joined Como on loan from AC Milan after cutting short his stay at Galatasaray. The Spain international arrives on a season-long loan arrangement with an obligation to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign. The 32-year-old joined Galatasaray in January on a 12-month loan deal, while the Turkish club also held an option to make the move permanent. GO FURTHER Alvaro Morata joins Como on loan from Milan after Galatasaray spell cut short Getty Images Over to Old Trafford now, where Laurie Whitwell brings news of advanced talks between Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion over a proposed loan for Toby Collyer. A host of Championship clubs have registered an interest in Collyer but West Brom appear to have won the race, with the structure of the deal agreed. The West Midlands club believe the 21-year-old can aid their push for promotion to the Premier League under head coach Ryan Mason. Getty Images While we are on the subject of incoming players at Elland Road, this is a fresh one from Beren Cross and James Horncastle this morning. Leeds are interested in a move for Milan forward Noah Okafor. There has been no official approach or club-to-club talks at this stage though the 25-year-old is a player that Leeds are looking at in the final weeks of the window. This will be one to keep an eye on. This was an interesting one from David Ornstein yesterday. Leeds United have reached an agreement in principle to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a free agent after his departure from Everton. The 28-year-old striker has been available since he confirmed in June that he would be leaving the Merseyside club as a free agent when his contract expired. He spent nine years at Goodison Park after joining from Sheffield United in 2016. He scored 71 goals in 274 appearances for Everton but his time at the club was plagued by injuries. Everton had offered the forward a new deal last summer, but an agreement never materialised. How about this one from yesterday via David Ornstein and Jacob Tanswell ? They report that Roma are in discussions with Aston Villa over a potential deal to sign winger Leon Bailey. The 28-year-old signed a new contract in February 2024, which runs until 2027. He is one of multiple players available to leave the Midlands club, including Alex Moreno and Leander Dendoncker. Clubs in Turkey — including Besiktas — and the Saudi Pro League are also said to be keen on Bailey, but Roma are emerging as the strongest suitor. GO FURTHER Roma in talks to sign Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey Getty Images Liverpool have reached an agreement with Parma to sign defender Giovanni Leoni. The Premier League club will pay a fee in the region of £26million (€30m) plus add-ons for the 18-year-old Italian youth international. The player has been permitted to travel to Merseyside to agree personal terms and undergo a medical, which is expected to begin on Thursday. The club's plan is for Leoni to be immediately integrated into the first-team set-up for the upcoming season with any suggestion of a loan move completely ruled out. GO FURTHER Liverpool reach agreement to sign Giovanni Leoni from Parma The Athletic Some news from Liverpool to bring you now... The big transfer news of the past few days involves Liverpool and their pursuit of Marc Guehi. The Crystal Palace captain is into the final year of his contract in south London and according to our transfer expert David Ornstein and Liverpool correspondent James Pearce , the Premier League champions have held talks over his potential signing. If he doesn't move this summer, Guehi is expected to leave as a free agent in the summer of 2026 when his contract expires as he has no intention of signing a new deal at Selhurst Park. Speaking after Sunday's Community Shield triumph, Palace chairman Steve Parish admitted that the England centre-back may have to be sold this summer. (Photo:) Sunderland have confirmed that Granit Xhaka has been appointed as club captain ahead of the side's return to the Premier League. Xhaka joined Sunderland in the summer from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to €20million (£13.4m; $23.3m). The 32-year-old, who also captains Switzerland in international competition, has worn the armband in pre-season for Sunderland. He briefly captained Arsenal in the 2019-20 season before he was stripped of the captaincy following an incident at the Emirates in October 2019 where the Switzerland international appeared to swear at the crowd after he was booed when being substituted. We know that the 2025-26 season across Europe is about to return, but there is so much more than just that here on The Athletic. The U.S. Open, the last tennis major of the year, is less than a fortnight away while the Ryder Cup will grab the attention of those of us in the UK and United States at the end of September. And before that, the new NFL and College Football seasons start. There is truly no better place than The Athletic to follow all that and more. You can subscribe on an exclusive offer here. The Premier League has strict rules about the number and type of players that its teams can submit as part of their official squad list for the upcoming season. Once the deadline closes on September 1, clubs will submit a 25-player squad list. From that number, a minimum of eight players must meet the league's 'home grown player' criteria. A player qualifies as home grown if they have been registered with an English of Welsh club for three full seasons before their 21st birthday. Under-21 players at any Premier League club do not need to be registered in the 25-man squad and can play at any time in the season for their team. The primary period for player trading opened for Premier League and EFL clubs back on June 16. They will have until deadline day on September 1 to conclude any trading. And this year, the window shuts earlier than the previous 11pm deadline — at a universally agreed and very civilised time of 7pm. As long as deal sheets are submitted to the FA before that 7pm deadline, clubs and staff have a grace period of two hours to conclude paperwork on any late deals. Good morning! And welcome back to The Athletic where we are still very much in transfer mode. The return of domestic top-flight football is now just a couple of days away, but there is no rest for the wicked in the wonderful world of incomings and outgoings. There are plenty more deals to be done and I'm sure we will have lots of interesting developments throughout the course of the day, so stick with us as we take you through it all!

Joseph Chapman, Nottinghamshire Live: How Forest will approach Premier League opener against Brentford

Nottinghamshire Live's Joseph Chapman has explained how Nuno Espírito Santo is likely to set up his Nottingham Forest side for Sunday's Premier League opener against Brentford. Forest enjoyed a highly impressive 2024/25 campaign, finishing seventh and qualifying for the Europa League. Chapman has highlighted Callum Hudson-Odoi and Morgan Gibbs-White as two players the Bees must be wary of during Keith Andrews' first competitive game in charge. How did Nottingham Forest's pre-season go? They scored one goal in seven games - and that was in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Fulham in Portugal, which they lost 3-1. Other than that, they lost 1-0 at Birmingham in a game that was dedicated to Trevor Francis, then the other five games all ended 0-0. While Forest have been pretty frugal in front of goal, they have definitely been as solid defensively as they were at times last year. But you cannot escape the fact pre-season is there for a reason; to find your shooting boots, to sharpen the strikers up. Chris Wood got the one goal but, other than that, it was pretty difficult. That said, I thought against Al Qadsiah last Saturday evening they did everything but score. They did create chances, certainly in the first half, and they just needed that one moment where maybe it falls the other side of the post. A few of the players were speaking to me in the mixed zone after the last two pre-season games about the goal situation and there was a consensus that it will click once the real stuff begins. 'A few of the players were speaking after the last two pre-season games about the goal situation and there was a consensus that it will click once the real stuff begins' The club have made four new signings at the time of speaking and more are reportedly on the way before the window closes. What have you made of their business so far and what do you think they still need to do? Forest have been very, very clever previously in the South American market and tapping into that - and they have done so again this summer. They have brought in Igor Jesus, who is a centre-forward, but played just off Chris Wood in the two games I saw in the last week of pre-season at the City Ground. He looks a real talent, but he is still finding his feet and he was the player that could have scored a couple of the goals on Saturday. They have also signed Jair Cunha, who is huge! He makes Nikola Milenković look quite slight - he is a big, big guy. He is a centre-half and I think he will be more cover for centre-half, though he did get minutes at right-back. Then they have signed Dan Ndoye, practically putting the Anthony Elanga money back into the first-team squad straight away. Ndoye is a Swiss international who played in the Champions League with Bologna last season. He is very, very quick, so it looks a real like-for-like replacement. Once Ndoye hits the Premier League and the real stuff begins in Europe, I think he is going to be a real talent, a real threat to opposing defences on the right-hand side. There were signs, I thought, throughout the course of the last game when Ola Aina played behind him, that there was a little bit of a relationship forming on the right-hand side, which is akin to what they have got on the other side with Nico Williams and Callum Hudson-Odoi, who interwove throughout the game. Their knowledge of each other is already really established. Clearly Forest need to do more because they are going to have more games and a more congested schedule. I think that will come, certainly with the news they are going to be playing in the Europa League. With that comes more effort required, but also more money as well, so it would not surprise me at all if they pushed the boat out and signed another three or four players before Deadline Day. How much are Forest fans looking forward to being back in Europe after so long? It's huge. The Europa League is a very prestigious competition, and I think they could go really well actually. They have got a really, really talented core of their squad. After the furore of a few years ago, with all the craziness in terms of the number of signings, they have actually accrued some real quality, like Morgan Gibbs-White, Elliot Anderson, Ola Aina, Neco Williams, Murillo, Nikola Milenković, Matz Sels in goal. They have squeezed the pips out of Chris Wood in the last couple of years. At this point now, it is about adding to it. Where you lose Elanga and you do good business and you make three or four times what you pay for them, I imagine they will try and do the same now with Ndoye and hope that Callum Hudson-Odoi can go to another level again and just make sure the next two or three players off the rank, in terms of substitutions, when Nuno Espírito Santo needs them, are of the same level. They have got so much in place already that there is nothing to fear with the Europa League. They can tackle it head-on and enjoy the Premier League. Which player should Brentford fans be keeping an eye out for? Based on what I saw last Saturday, Hudson-Odoi looked eye-catchingly sharp. He is obviously a very talented player anyway and he is somebody who might have achieved more before now. If he had done, then he would probably be established in the Chelsea first team, but we all know what Chelsea are like in terms of the way that they get through players. He seems to have found a home at Forest and certainly last year I thought he was very good for large portions of the season. With Elanga gone and Ndoye needing a little bit of time just to bed in, there might be a bit more emphasis on Hudson-Odoi being prominent in producing opportunities for Jesus and Wood. 'Hudson-Odoi looked eye-catchingly sharp. With Elanga gone and Ndoye needing a little bit of time to bed in, there might be a bit more emphasis on Hudson-Odoi being prominent in producing opportunities for Jesus and Wood' Gibbs-White is a player who, it goes without saying, you have got to keep an eye on if you are Brentford and Keith Andrews. He is a talisman, responsible for 15 goal contributions in the Premier League last year. It was a huge fillip for the club that they were able to keep him and sign him up to a new contract. But what I saw in pre-season last Saturday - when Gibbs-White was absent - is that Hudson-Odoi was very sharp and created a few chances, showed a great turn of pace on the left-hand side. He has got a really good understanding with Neco Williams behind him. If Hudson-Odoi can take portions of his performance on Saturday into Sunday's game, then he is going to be a real threat. What should Keith Andrews' players expect in terms of shape and style? They are pretty settled really in a 4-2-3-1. The introduction of Jesus is quite interesting because he is somebody who you could see being utilised as a striker and they could end up being 4-4-2 when they are in attack, then he drops a little bit deeper, just behind Wood, when they are out of possession. That is the way they were playing previously. I would expect them to play: Sels, Aina, Murillo, Milenković, Williams, Anderson, Gibbs-White, Ndoye, Hudson-Odoi, Jesus, Wood. It is a style on 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 - one of those combinations. I do not see them veering away from what they were doing last season. It's a bit of a stab in the dark on the opening day, but what's your score prediction? I will say 2-1 to Forest.
