Disowned trans woman gives new lease of life to abandoned children

Ranchi: Rajkumari, a 63-year-old trans woman from Bihar's Bareilly, faced unimaginable hardship right from a tender age after being disowned by her father, following her mother's passing.
Left to fend for herself, she wandered for days till she was taken under the wings of a compassionate community of trans women, who provided her with shelter and support.
That act of kindness by the group left a deep impression on her and motivated her to work for the deprived throughout her life.
In the last 20 years, Rajkumari has been nurturing and giving a new lease of life to seven children, who were disowned by their families for various reasons.
She has adopted the children, educated them and supported them to build their own careers and families. She is now devoted to raising two more young kids – a four-year-old and a mere six-month-old infant, giving them a chance at a brighter future.
"When my father disowned me and threw me out of home for a reason for which I was not responsible at all, I was hurt and shocked. At that time, the trans women group appeared as angels before me and saved my life.
Around 20 years ago, when I encountered a baby barely a few days old, I found myself in the same position as them and from that day onwards, I took it as a mission to rescue and raise the souls who are abandoned by their parents," Rajkumari told TOI.
With no family of her own to turn to, she has become the guardian angel of the children, providing them with a second chance at life. "They have made me feel fulfilled, having lived a significant amount of my life without the warmth of a family.
As marriages do not take place in the Kinnar community, I would not ever feel the togetherness of a family if I had not found these children," she added.
Rajkumari collects the money needed to raise the children and their education by wandering on the Bokaro streets and participating in auspicious family functions. Despite the economic hurdles she faces every day in nourishing the children, she continues to do the noble work.
"I have appealed to the govt authorities for financial help in raising my children many times. Although they had promised, I have not received anything yet. Nevertheless, without anyone's help, I will continue my work till my last breath," she added.

1 2 Pune: The state education department's Fee Regulatory Authority (FRA) has discouraged private professional course colleges in Maharashtra from collecting 'caution deposits' under multiple names or charging fees beyond the prescribed limit. Since July, the FRA has received several complaints from parents and students seeking admission for engineering, management, hotel management, law and other professional courses regarding high deposits demanded by private colleges. In a letter issued to all private colleges on Aug 8, FRA secretary Arjun Chikhale stated, "Caution money should be collected only once and must be refunded to the student after completion of the course." "If violations are found and complaints from students or parents are received, action will be taken under Section 20 of the Act," the FRA warned in its letter. Sushma Kulkarni, a parent seeking admission for her daughter Sharayu Kulkarni to a management course in the city, said, "The tuition fee is much less than the deposit demanded by the private college where my daughter is seeking admission. We have written to FRA along with many other parents regarding the unreasonable amount taken from us." The authority also addressed hostel and mess services, stating these must remain optional. Institutions cannot compel students to avail themselves of such facilities. Pranav Mande, who graduated as an engineer last year, said colleges were not even returning the deposit amount after completion of the course. He told TOI, "I received my graduation certificate in engineering in 2024 and despite following up with the college for many months to return my caution deposit, there is no response. I have already made four to five rounds to the accounts department and mailed college authorities, but there seems to be no progress in returning my deposit. " Chikhale added in the letter, "The circular serves as a strong reminder to colleges to comply with state fee regulations, while assuring students and parents that overcharging complaints will be acted upon swiftly." Mandal members of 3 areas meet cops to demand ban on plasma speakers, laser lights during Ganeshotsav
Pune: The city police on Monday met members of Ganapati mandals from Kelkar Road, Kumthekar Road and Tilak Road in the Peth areas to discuss measures during the upcoming Ganeshotsav that begins at the end of Aug. During the meeting, the members requested a police crackdown against the use of laser lights and plasma speakers by mandals during festivities. The police said laser lights have already been disallowed since last year, but a call will be taken on plasma speakers. The mandals from these three routes had earlier claimed that they feel neglected as the police and civic authorities give priority to mandals located on Laxmi Road during the festival. As a result, this special meeting was convened on Monday to discuss their issues. We informed them that the use of laser lights has been banned from 2024 anyway." He added, "Mandal members then also demanded a ban on the use of plasma speakers. They said these speakers tend to produce high-pitched, harsh noises and cause mental distress. We will soon take a call on the same after studying the impact of these speakers on human health." The senior police officer also said, "Generally, mandal members take permission to use dhol-tasha and loudspeakers for only immersion day, but the procession also continues into the second day. So, we have requested them to seek permission for these things for two days instead of one." Flyover height poses hurdle for Ganesh Chaturthi processions
Hubballi: With the Ganesh Chaturthi nearing, the 20-feet tall flyover between Channamma Circle and Indira Glass House is emerging as a hurdle. Idols like Hubballi Ka Raja stand 23 feet tall, needing 26 feet clearance, once loaded on vehicles. Organisers are in a fix over this issue and are approaching authorities to suggest an alternative procession route. D Govind Rao, founder president, Shree Gajanan Mahamandal, Hubballi, told TOI that a discussion is ongoing among Ganesh festival organisers in the city. "Since the stretch is not yet open for vehicles, we are unaware of the height of the flyover. If the height is less than 25 feet, we will approach the police seeking an alternative route for the procession of Ganesha idols that will be immersed on the 7th and 11th days of installation. We feel the Old Bus Stand road is a good route for the procession. However, we will discuss with the concerned Ganesh Mandals and make a decision," he explained. Sanjay Meharwade, president, Hubballi Ka Raja Shree Gajanan Utsav Samiti, said that this time they have ordered a 23-feet idol in Bengaluru. "Our trolley will be 2.6 or 3 feet in height. Hence, we need a height space of about 26 feet. If we demand the Girani Chawl, RNS Kalyan Mantap route, again we will have to pass under the same flyover from IT Park to Hosur Circle. So we are confused about whether we should take the procession on Neeligin Road and Bharat Mill Road," he expressed. We feel the trolleys can move by the side of the flyover. However, we will have to check the width of the trolleys and the available space alongside the flyover.
