Dengue cases rise again: here's how to remain safe
Intolerable summer heat and sudden notification '80% chances of rain today' - sounds more like a relief, right? But love for the monsoon isn't just human-only-mosquitoes feel the same too.
The Aedes aegypti mosquito, which carries the dengue virus, mostly breeds in stagnant water. From water collected in old tyres and flower pots to puddles that one hates, these tiny breeding spots can turn into the reason for extreme loss, even death. Throughout the monsoon season, humidity remains high which is favourite for mosquitoes to breed, particularly in the range of 80% or higher. This simply allows them to retain moisture and survive longer.
On the other hand, because of the limited sunlight, which may feel like a relief after spending a scorching summer in India, evaporation of stagnant water slows.
When to know 'You are not safe anymore':
Sudden high fever:
If one starts developing high fever, sometimes reaching up to 104°F, then there is a need for proper medical consultation. This fever usually can last 2 to 7 days.
Severe headache and pain behind the eyes:
Intense headaches are typical, with specific pain felt behind the eyes that worsens with eye movement, making it a prominent symptom.

Joint and muscle pain:
People with dengue often experience severe muscle and joint pains, which is why this disease often earns the title of "breakbone fever" due to the intensity of these aches. Sudden ache in any body part is a red flag itself and demands immediate attention.
Nausea and vomiting:
Feeling nauseous and vomiting are common during dengue infection, contributing to discomfort and dehydration risk.
According to a report published by the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
, about 1 in 20 people who get sick with dengue will develop severe dengue.
Severe dengue can result in shock, internal bleeding, and death. So, instead of doing experiments at home, if these symptoms continue beyond 2–3 days, it is crucial to seek immediate medical testing.

How to develop Mosquito disease-proof shields in the body
Almost everyone grew up listening to why it is important to clear stagnant water, no matter in which form it is. But is it enough to not let water get clogged or always stay inside the net? The question that comes more often is: How to make the body ready to fight these diseases?
Vitamin C-rich foods like oranges, kiwi, and guava help because Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that boosts the immune system by supporting various cellular functions, making you less prone to infections.
According to a
National Library of Medicine study
, papaya leaf extract is not a cure-all, but studies show it may help maintain platelet counts, especially in dengue, by stimulating blood cell production and reducing platelet loss. So, while it is no magic potion, it's a smart natural aid to have on your side.
Staying hydrated with coconut water, herbal teas, and fresh juices is essential because liquids help flush out toxins and keep body cells functioning optimally, giving the immune system the best chance to fight invaders.
Traditional favorites like turmeric milk and giloy juice have bioactive compounds shown to have anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting effects, making them worthy old-school heroes worth sipping for that extra defense.

Dengue Myths
Dengue spreads from person to person.
For years this phrase has been going on, making people secluded if they are affected by dengue. But in reality, it does not spread through regular human contact.
Only a mosquito bite can transmit it.
Mosquitoes breed only in dirty water.
They love clean water too—like the one in your flower vase.

Plants that can be savior this monsoon
Often in the process of taking 'serious prevention' we ignore small but gem elements present around us. Mosquito-repelling plants are not just a functional choice—they can enhance a home's aesthetic while serving as a natural defense against dengue.
Citronella:
Known as the 'mosquito plant,' citronella releases a strong lemony fragrance that blocks human scents like carbon dioxide and lactic acid, which attract mosquitoes. Keeping citronella plants on balconies, near windows, or in living areas can significantly reduce mosquito presence.
Tulsi:
Studies have shown that tulsi leaves compounds like eugenol and camphene, which mosquitoes find unpleasant.
Lavender:
Apart from its calming aroma and decorative purple flowers, lavender oil is a recognized mosquito repellent due to compounds like linalool and camphor. A lavender pot on your bedside table serves both purposes: decor as well as defense.

Gorakhpur has access to best of healthcare, med expense coverage: Yogi
1 2 Gorakhpur: High-end super specialty healthcare is accessible in Gorakhpur and Ayushman Bharat and Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Yojana are ensuring coverage of medical expenses up to Rs 5 lakh. This was stated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who inaugurated a state-of-the-art private hospital on Medical College road in the city, on Sunday. He assured citizens that if additional assistance was needed, the CM Relief Fund and contributions from legislators' funds would be extended. "Last year, Rs 1,100 crore was provided under the CM Relief Fund for medical treatment," said Yogi. He also launched the hospital's patient-care mobile app 'Regency MyCare' and inspected the newly inaugurated facilities. Yogi pointed out that just a decade ago, eastern UP's healthcare system was in a "dismal" state, BRD Medical College being the lone major hospital, struggling to provide treatment to the needy. "Today, BRD has been upgraded, AIIMS Gorakhpur is functional, and several new medical colleges have come up in districts like Basti, Deoria, Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj, Jaunpur, and others. Soon, Ballia will also have its own medical college," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 1 Reason to Read The 5 Books American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends For Turning Your Life... NZP to set up India's first biosafety level-3 lab for animal disease detection
Hyderabad: The Nehru Zoological Park (NZP) intends to set up a biosafety level-3 (BSL-3) lab on its premises soon, officials from the zoo said. A BSL-3 lab is a disease-detecting facility used to identify zoonotic diseases in animals and prevent their spread to human beings and vice versa. Once operational, it will help the zoo conduct everyday testing of the animals, help control the spread of viral infections, and also prepare for long-term disease management. "We have seen what COVID-19, a zoonotic disease that was transmitted from bats, could do to the human population. With the lab in place, we can constantly monitor the health of the animals and any potential viruses they may be carrying. Moreover, in a zoo like ours, where animal-human interaction is high, it becomes even more important to set up this lab to safeguard our visitors," said Sunil S Hiremath, the director of NZP. Presently, the zoo has a veterinary hospital that it uses to treat its animals for medical conditions and an in-house lab, where the zoo uses faecal and blood sample analysis for primary disease diagnosis like salmonellosis, gastrointestinal issues like acute or chronic gastroenteritis, and conditions like tuberculosis. It relies on institutes like the veterinary biological research institute (VBRI) and the PV Narasimha Rao Telangana veterinary university for lab diagnosis of secondary diseases like parasitical, bacterial, and viral infections, according to biologists and veterinary doctors working in the zoo. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Currently, the zoo is in the process of drafting a proposal to the central govt to get the necessary approvals. Once the project is approved, it will be launched as a govt of India project, officials said. "My team and I are in the process of finalising the details for the lab. Once that is done, we should have a clearer picture of how much the lab is going to cost us and how much space it will take," the director said. "We have the necessary manpower to run it successfully too. We have so many qualified scientists in the zoo, and the city is home to a number of reputed veterinary institutes and colleges like the VBRI and the Veterinary University in Rajendranagar, with whom we'll collaborate," the director added. If the project goes through, NZP will become the first zoo in the country to have a BSL-3 lab. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Sickle cell patients await BMT as govt scheme, centres yet to take off in Nagpur
1 2 Nagpur: At least 12 sickle cell and thalassaemia paediatric patients are now endlessly waiting for bone marrow transplants (BMT) as govt-run hospitals in the region don't have a dedicated unit for them. Two government centres have been proposed, but the lack of a financial assistance scheme has only meant that the costly BMT remains a non-starter. The tertiary care centres proposed to start a dedicated BMT centre for SCD and thalassaemia patients last year with much fanfare, but there has been little progress. Similarly, a government hospital has already started a BMT centre for other blood disorders, but a dedicated unit for SCD and thalassaemia patients is still a far cry, despite it signing an MoU for funding too. City MP and Union minister Nitin Gadkari has often slammed premier institutes for dragging their feet on starting BMT for SCD and thalassaemia patients in Nagpur. Dr Sanjay Deshmukh, in charge of state-run Daga Memorial Hospital, said they registered 12 patients after screening them for HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) typing tests. "Before BMT, HLA typing is a must to match a donor," he said. Daga Memorial Hospital has been facilitating the HLA test in association with Sankalp Foundation for free of cost. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Vitauthority Learn More Undo The test costs Rs30,000 in a private setup. On August 18, Daga Hospital will again hold a camp for patients below 18 years with sickle cell and thalassaemia. The earlier the BMT is done, the higher the chances of its success. The samples are sent to Bangalore. WCL is funding Rs 12 lakh for BMT of SCD and thalassaemia patients in some hospitals, including one in Mumbai. The Maharashtra government is yet to offer any funding for sickle cell and thalassaemia patients for BMT. Other states offer Rs 15 to 20 lakh to these patients for BMT. A couple of private hospitals in Nagpur have done BMT for patients funded by their respective state governments. The CSR sponsors require at least an 8-bed dedicated unit to pledge funding. Vinky Rughwani, president, thalassaemia and Sickle Cell Society of India, said, "We will ensure that these 12 patients get BMT done in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, or Chennai at no cost till Nagpur gets a centre. We have taken the initiative to establish a dedicated BMT centre for these patients. We hope to see BMT done in Nagpur soon."
