Man who tricked his way into Wembley for Champions League final may face jail
Steven Carruthers and his four-year-old son mingled with fashion model Naomi Campbell and heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk when they watched the Champions League final from top-tier seats worth £21,800 'at the lowest', prosecutors said.
The 34-year-old, from Hull in East Yorkshire, appeared at Willesden Magistrates' Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to one count of obtaining services dishonestly.
Rachna Gokani, prosecuting, told the court: 'The defendant involved his young son who was four years old at the time in order to assist his illegal entrance into the stadium.

'He was wearing a suit for the specific purpose of looking like he was entitled to these services.'
Ms Gokani added Carruthers went on to 'advertise his offending' in a national newspaper.
She said: 'He went to the Daily Mail and a football-related publication, essentially boasting about gaining entry – something he said he had done previously.
'Mr Carruthers was boasting precisely that he met Naomi Campbell and the heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk and other celebrities.'

Quoting a probation officer who met Carruthers prior to the hearing, Ms Gokani added: 'He had no shame or remorse and was clearly proud of what he had accomplished.'
The court heard Carruthers and his son enjoyed an exclusive hospitality area which regular members of the public were not able to purchase.
Spanish giants Real Madrid defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the match played on June 1 2024.
Ms Gokani said: 'The most expensive hospitality package available on that day was £10,900 per person.
'The hospitality area which Mr Carruthers entered is on a hospitality package which basically exceeds that.
'It's only available for certain VIPs, members of the public cannot purchase it.
'The Daily Mail article and Mr Carruthers himself refer to a cost of about £20,000 for tickets, so he is plainly aware of the levels we are dealing with.'
Ms Gokani said the offending and its subsequent 'advertisement' in the Daily Mail posed security risks for Wembley Stadium, and prompted the Football Association to prosecute Carruthers.
Referring the 2020 Euro final mass disorder incident, when more than 2,000 people stormed their way into Wembley, she said: 'The devastating events of that day are why they (the FA) take offences such as this seriously.
'There are real risks in terms of disorder, health and safety, and the status of the stadium.'
Carruthers, who represented himself in court, apologised after he was told the offence carried a maximum sentence of three years in jail.
He said: 'I'm regretful of what I did, it really does worry me about jail, to be honest.
'I don't really want to ruin my kids' future.'
Lead magistrate Laura Mee told the defendant the case is to be transferred to crown court for sentence as the serious nature of the offence exceeds the magistrates' sentencing powers.
Carruthers told the panel as he left the dock: 'I think it's excessive, I've not hurt anyone.'
He will be sentenced at Harrow Crown Court at a date yet to be fixed.

French beach patrols are left depleted during peak summer months as officers are redeployed to the south of the country to deal with tourist season, it has been claimed. A former Home Office official told The Mail on Sunday it was believed that the French would retain a 'nominal number' on the north coast to stop channel crossings, but would divert resources elsewhere to cope with an influx of tourists flocking to enjoy the sunshine. This would leave patrols in the north at their weakest just as smugglers were ramping up operations to take advantage of calmer seas. It comes as one gendarme told this newspaper there were already 'not enough' police to stop the crossings. Such complaints are unlikely to go down well in Westminster, after the UK struck a deal with the French in 2023 to provide £480 million over three years to tackle the problem. The money was supposed to double the number of personnel deployed on beach patrols, while providing for a new, highly trained, permanent French mobile policing unit, additional drones, aircraft and other surveillance technology. But the Home Office source said it was thought some gendarmes 'get sent to tourist hotspots during the summer', in a move indicative of French priorities. The source also said this was the case for 'big events in Paris' that required heavy policing. The day with the most migrants crossing the Channel this year was May 31, when 1,194 made the trip. That coincided with the Champions League Final, an event that drew a large police operation in Paris due to Paris Saint-Germain's participation. France's PAF frontier police have previously conceded that beach patrols are scaled back during the summer as gendarmes take advantage of generous holiday allowance. UK Border Force sources have warned that people traffickers are aware of these holiday patterns and plotted to 'take advantage'. La Prefecture du Nord – the authority responsible for governing the region around Calais and Dunkirk – declined to comment on the claims. It also rebuffed a request for data showing the monthly patrol numbers. The 2023 deal was also supposed to help fund a new detention centre on the outskirts of Dunkirk. But construction has been delayed until November this year, due to problems with planning approval. When the MoS visited the site on an industrial estate believed to have been chosen for the 140-capacity centre, it found an empty area of grassland that had been cordoned off with rocks.

Man arrested over alleged 'gangland' shooting in bar in Spain named
The 44-year-old man arrested has been named after Spanish authorities issued an international arrest warrant following the alleged killings of Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jnr. A man arrested after two senior figures from a Scottish organised crime group were murdered in a Spanish bar has been named. Ross Monaghan, 43, and Eddie Lyons Jnr, 46, were shot dead at Monaghan's Bar in Fuengirola in the Costa Del Sol on May 31. Michael Terrence Riley, 44, from Merseyside, was arrested in England on Friday evening in connection with the alleged shootings in the Costa del Sol on May 31, the Liverpool Echo reports. He is due to appear in court next week after an appearance at Westminster Magistrates' Court this morning, Saturday June 14. Riley faces extradition to Spain after an international arrest warrant was issued by Spanish authorities. Spanish police want to question Riley about the double killing at the Irish bar in Malaga. Monaghan, 43, and Lyons Jnr, 46, died after a masked gunman opened fire at around 11pm on May 31. Following the Spain shooting, Police Scotland issued a statement saying there was no intelligence to suggest the deaths were linked with a series of criminal acts by rival groups in Scotland. A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said today: "We can confirm yesterday evening, Friday 13 June, a man was arrested in connection with two fatal shootings in Spain on 31 May. "The 44-year-old man from Merseyside appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court this morning, Saturday 14 June, for the commencement of extradition proceedings to Spain. He has been remanded into custody to appear in court at a later date." Riley was detained on an international arrest warrant, which is a request issued by a judicial authority in one country to another to help locate someone for extradition. Any extradition would have to be approved by a UK court. Shocking footage captured the chilling moments after the incident as a passerby desperately tried to save fatally shot gangster Eddie Lyons. A witness recorded the footage, which was seen by the Record, after hearing the gunshots outside the Monaghan's pub in Fuengirola in the Costa Del Sol. It shows them arriving at the boozer where one female Good Samaritan is attempting CPR on stricken Lyons outside. The voice of a man crouching next to Lyons can be heard repeatedly saying 'help him' as the woman unsuccessfully tries to revive Eddie. It is understood the shootings are not linked to Scotland's ongoing gangland war which has been raging on with incidents across the central belt since March. Cops announced on Friday, June 13, that two more men have been arrested in connection with the gang violence in Edinburgh and Glasgow, bringing the total to 44. Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Ferry said: 'Our continued activity and arrests show our commitment to targeting organised crime and bringing those responsible to justice. 'We continue to investigate and follow a number of positive lines of enquiry. The support and response from the public has been excellent, and I am grateful for the assistance given to us and that continued support from local communities is crucial as we progress our enquiries.
