Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation of projects worth Rs 5,200 crore, including three new stretches of the Kolkata Metro, and an elevated corridor in adjacent Howrah, during his visit to the eastern metropolis on August 22, officials said. PM Modi will inaugurate the new Metro stretches around 4.15 pm on Friday and undertake a metro ride from Jessore Road metro station to Jai Hind Bimanbandar station and back, a Kolkata Metro Railway spokesperson said on Wednesday.He will also lay the foundation of 7.2-km elevated Kona Expressway worth over Rs 1,200 crore, which will enhance connectivity between Howrah and Kolkata.The inauguration of the crucial 13.62 km, in all, of metro stretches will provide seamless connectivity between important points in the city, including Howrah and Sealdah stations, IT hub Sector 5 and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.The three new stretches are Sealdah to Esplanade (2.45 km), Noapara to Jaihind Bimanbandar (6.77 km) and Hemanta Mukhopadhyay to Beleghata stations (4.39 km) across three different corridors of Kolkata Metro.After the inauguration, PM Modi will also address the gathering at Jessore Road metro station.The Noapara-Jai Hind Bimanbandar metro service will significantly improve access to the airport. The Sealdah-Esplanade metro will reduce the travel time between the two points from nearly 40 minutes to only 11 minutes, a Metro statement said.The Beleghata-HemantaMukhopadhyay metro section will play a crucial role in enhancing connectivity with the IT hub. These metro routes will connect some of Kolkata's busiest areas, bring a notable reduction in travel time, and strengthen multimodal connectivity, benefiting lakhs of daily commuters, it added.While the new stretches will provide wide access to daily commuters and visitors to the length and breadth of the city, it is expected to also help revellers visit Durga Puja pandals throughout the metropolis during the festivities later next month.

NEW DELHI: The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a penalty of Rs 10 lakh on ride-hailing platform Rapido for disseminating misleading advertisements and engaging in unfair trade practices, reports Dipak Dash. However, CCPA noted the advertisements did not include the term "up to", and the "T&C Apply" disclaimer was barely visible.

India Successfully Conducts Test Of Agni-5 Ballistic Missile From Odisha
India successfully test-fired the indigenous intermediate range ballistic missile Agni-5 on Wednesday from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha. The Defence Ministry confirmed that the trial met all technical and operational requirements and was conducted under the supervision of the Strategic Forces Command. The Agni-5 missile, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has a strike range of about 5,000 kilometres, bringing most of Asia—including northern China—and parts of Europe within its reach. Officials noted that the latest launch further enhances India's strategic deterrence. This trial comes less than four months after India's military confrontation with Pakistan, though authorities avoided linking the two developments. A longer-range intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) version of Agni-5, capable of reaching 7,000 kilometres, is also under development. In June, reports suggested DRDO is working on upgrading the missile's range to 7,500 km. India has already deployed Agni series missiles with ranges between 700 km and 3,500 km. Last year, the country also carried out the first test of an Agni-5 variant equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, which allows a single missile to carry multiple nuclear warheads. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised DRDO scientists for their continued efforts in strengthening India's defence capabilities. In recent months, India has also test-fired other key systems, including the Prithvi-II (350 km range), Agni-I (700–900 km range), and the tactical surface-to-surface missile 'Pralay,' boosting its conventional and nuclear deterrence arsenal.

New biofuel policy to be implemented soon in Karnataka: KSBDB chief
Gadag: Karnataka State Bioenergy Development Board (KSBDB) chairman SE Sudheendra stated that all preliminary activities for the formulation of a new biofuel policy in the state have already been completed. The new biofuel policy will be announced soon by the state govt, and guidelines for its implementation have already been prepared. Inaugurating the Sadbhavana Day, Renewable Energy Day, and World Biofuel Day celebrations, organised by KSBDB at the Rural Development University on Wednesday, Sudhindra explained that an investment of over Rs 1 lakh crore is expected in the biofuel sector over the next five years. "This will create over three lakh direct and indirect jobs, increase the income of farmers' families, and provide encouragement to young entrepreneurs. The coming five years will be crucial for the development of the biofuel sector in Karnataka," he asserted. Sadbhavana Day and Renewable Energy Day are celebrated to highlight the advancements in science, technology, information, and life sciences in the 21st century. The main aim of Renewable Energy Day is to raise awareness and consciousness about national unity, social harmony, and tolerance among people.
