Loving Giving Local: Rhoxon Productions
Movie enthusiasts will benefit from this week's Loving Giving Local donation. A local movie production company that sponsors a film festival is this week's recipient. Rhoxon Productions got a financial gift from Auto Express Resale Center. Rhoxon is an Erie-based non-profit independent film company that creates organic stories that promote a positive change. Besides creating art, Rhoxon strives to create jobs and educational opportunities in the film industry. 'Our last few projects have been about healing and about coping, and our next two are about revamping the social justice system,' said Katie Nixon, RhoxonProductions co-founder. 'That's sort of our creative endeavors, and we also create educational opportunities for people to learn how to do this professionally.' Nixon says Rhoxon has a vision of creating 50 new jobs in the film industry here. And she insists you no longer have to be on the East or West Coast to have a film career. 'No, the landscape has changed so much. Even Netflix has created their new studio out in Jersey. It's not just that you have be in New York or LA,' she explained. 'Erie is kinda a really interesting place. You have beach, you have woods, you have city, you have country all within 15 minutes of each other.' That landscape diversity, Nixon said, makes Northwest Pennsylvania the perfect place for shooting movies. This week's Loving Giving Local donation will help support an upcoming film festival. Nixon said, 'We started the only multi-genre film festival here in Erie. It's the Lake Effect Film Festival, which will be in September. So that money will go to help make that event possible.' After making his check presentation, Joe Askins of Auto Express Resale Center said, 'We're pretty fortunate to have Rhoxon in our community and they're already doing great things. So for us to be able to deliver loving giving local and to learn the donation we bring is going toward their film festival, that's what Loving Giving Local is all about,' Askins said. LGL: WCTL Radio 106.3
An Erie Christian radio station, broadcasting to the region for 58 years, got a visit from JET 24's Loving Giving Local this week. Dan Sheldon and Lori Clapper host the morning show on WCTL Radio 106.3. The Christian radio station has been delivering it's message over the airwaves in the tri-state area since 1967. Nothing short of a miracle on today's radio landscape. 'What we love is that 58 years later and in radio, we're still local,' said WCTL morning show host Lori Clapper. 'We broadcast the latest Christian music. We have fun programs. I'm part of the morning show from 6:30 to 10 am. So, we have a family-friendly morning show, which is nice.' She added, 'It's important for families because they can turn us on and not be afraid of what the kids might hear.' WCTL Radio was the recipient of this week's Loving Giving Local of $250 from Auto Express. It comes at a good time, according to Clapper. 'We have been in the middle of a capital campaign where we are making improvements to not only to our physical building here but to our on-air presence as well. We are just thrilled to receive this gift as part of that. sort of icing on the cake to just help us move forward and into the future,' she said. After making the check presentation, Joe Askins of Auto Express said, WCTL has been on the air in our community for over 50 years. 'For us to be able to deliver Loving Giving Local here today and all they have going on at this location, we know the donation will go to great use, and that's what Loving Giving Local is all about,' Askins said. WCTL is listener-supported radio. Besides the check from Loving Giving Local, there are ways you can help support his local ministry. 'Maybe you have something to offer that would help our building or help our on-air presence,' Clapper explained. 'We're open to discussing things like that as well.' And she added, 'If you're a business, you can also advertise.' The radio station conducts a spring and fall share-a-thon to raise funds to support their work. LGL: Union City School District Foundation
Not every school district has one, but Union City does. The Union City School District Foundation is the recipient of this week's JET 24/FOX 66 Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express. Helping students grow. That's the mission of the foundation. Donations to the organization help with a variety of initiatives, according to foundation board member Steve Jones. 'Most specifically, it's for the scholarships that we provide and also mini teacher grants,' Jones said. So teachers can come up with special ideas that otherwise that would not have been able to do. These teacher grants give them those opportunities to help enrich the lives of the students they have.' One of the most noticeable projects funded in part by the foundation is recent upgrades to the district's sports complex. Jones said, 'We put in all new dugouts, fields, fencing, concession stands, and most importantly, the press box. When you come into this community now, you can see the difference.' The foundation received a $250 Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express and immediately assigned it to students for something special. 'We're going to put it towards International Day, which is a day we get to celebrate a bunch of different countries all over the world. And we get to try different foods from some of those countries. and play games and socialize,' said student Ava Greer. The work of the Union City School District Foundation can be supported by you on ERIE GIVES day, coming up August 12. Every week, JET 24/FOX66 and the Auto Express team up to honor a local non-profit. Find out who it is next, on Good Morning Erie on JET 24 or Good Day Erie on FOX 66, Wednesday mornings.
