Shaw was just 51 when he suffered a heart attack at the wheel of his Range Rover on August 28th, 1978. He was with his third wife Virginia Jansen and the youngest of his 10 children, Thomas, aged one.
He passed a pleasant afternoon golfing and was driving from Castlebar to his home at Drimbawn House, his red brick mansion in Tourmakeady, Co Mayo.
The house, on the shores of Lough Mask, was once owned by the Jameson family of whiskey fame. He bought it in 1971 as a refuge to escape the clutches of the British Inland Revenue.

Shaw had been in splendid form and thought he had heart palpitations. He got out of the car to walk it off. He had only taken a few paces when he collapsed again. A passing motorist turned around and drove back to the village to fetch the local doctor, Dr Frank Browne, but he was unable to revive the stricken actor.
Shortly before he died ,Shaw gave up the drink fearing he would die as his great hero Errol Flynn had done prematurely and from alcohol-related disease. 'He had no liver left at all. I decided I didn't want to go that way at that age.'
Sobriety came too late for Shaw. He drank a bottle of vodka every day before going on set for Force 10 from Navarone which finished shooting in early 1978. The script was so bad he wanted to quit acting, but needs must when you have 10 children, an expensive house to run and a sizeable tax bill. 'To fulfil my obligations I've taken roles and spoken lines that I would be ashamed to have written,' he once said.
He had the starring role in his last film Avalanche Express. By the time it was released in 1979 both he and the director Mark Robson were dead.
Shaw is best remembered as Quint in Jaws released on June 19th, 1975 with little fanfare and even less expectation. It is a peculiarity of that film that its leading man - Shaw was billed ahead of actor Roy Scheider who played Chief Brody - and its real star, the titular shark, hardly appear until the final half hour of the film.
We first meet him Quint scraping his nails down a blackboard to attract attention to himself while the mayor and locals deliberate on whether or not there really was a man-eating shark in the waters around Amity Island (real life Martha's Vineyard).
Quint is an Irish-American who had his head bashed in during a brawl on St Patrick's Day in Boston. He displays his war wound to 'college boy' shark expert Matt Hooper (played by Richard Dreyfuss) while they describe their respective war wounds from wrestling human being and man-eating fish.
Quint, the rule-breaking war veteran and shark hunter, and Hooper, the privileged graduate of the Oceanographic Institute, needled each other in real life as much as they did on screen. Shaw behaved like a 'demon' on set and would frequently taunt and tease him, Dreyfuss remembered.
He never knew if Shaw was being serious or just trying to get a better performance out of him, but, in any case, the dynamic worked perfectly on screen.
Shaw's son Ian, the image of his father, co-wrote a play, The Shark is Broken, in which he played his father and focuses on the relationship between the three human stars of the film. It was staged at the Gaiety Theatre in May in advance of the 50th anniversary of the release of Jaws this month.
The relationship between Dreyfuss and Shaw was only one of a smorgasbord of tribulations which affected the young and relatively unknown director Steven Spielberg. The mechanical shark, nicknamed Bruce, worked perfectly in a freshwater location, but in sea water, its rubber skin began to expand and distort and the mechanics short circuited.
As a consequence, the shark is only in shot for four minutes in total. The film is an hour old before we get the first sighting of the shark in all its horrific magnificence causing Schieder to improvise the most famous line in the film, 'You're going to need a bigger boat'.
Jaws made Shaw the leading man he always craved to be. He starred in Black Sunday (1977) and The Deep (1978) written by the author Peter Benchley who wrote the book on which the film was based.
He was edging closer to the financial independence which would have allowed him to fulfil his true ambition – to become a full-time writer.
Despite all the chaos in his life and his alcoholism, Shaw had written five novels in the 1960s, one, The Man in the Glass Booth, was successfully adopted for Broadway, but his film career became all-consuming.
He was penning a sixth, with the working title of The Ice Floe, when he died. 'When they write my obituary, I would like them to say, 'He was an author who wrote one book that will last and he was also a remarkable actor',' he once suggested.
For weeks afterwards telegrams and cars arrived at the Tourmakeady post office from around the world. Shaw was cremated in Belfast and his ashes scattered near his Irish home.
A stone chair was erected in the village to mark the 30th anniversary of his death. Speaking at its unveiling, Virginia said Shaw's Mayo home was his favourite place in the world: 'He just wanted to be himself. He wanted real life. Tourmakeady gave them that. He didn't like the razzmatazz of Hollywood.'

Rose of Tralee 2025: What does the winner get and what must she do during her year's reign?
The winner of the Rose of Tralee will bag a list of lavish prizes, but the cherry on the cake must be the €25,000 travel bursary. The winning Rose has a year to make the most of the fund and can decide how to spend it, although with stipulations. Organisers say the 2025 winner will use the money to represent the Rose of Tralee International Festival and help connect the global Irish community throughout the year. The ultimate itinerary is at the discretion of the winner – for example 2024 Rose Keely O'Grady travelled to Chicago for St Patrick's Day, to Wellington for the New Zealand Irish Dance Championships and to Poland to volunteer at the Happy Kids Foundation orphanage. Then there is an all-expenses-paid week-long trip around the Kingdom, with stops including Killarney and Dingle for her and a friend. The costs are covered by Kerry County Council, although it is unclear if she will have to perform Rose duties as part of this trip. The 2025 winner will also receive complimentary accommodation for her and a friend at the Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee, every time she returns to the town during the year of her reign. The four-star hotel is the home to the Roses for the duration of the festival. Another official partner of the festival, the Brush 'N' Blush hair and beauty group, will style the victor's hair free for the upcoming year any time she is in Tralee. The prize for escort of the year is a much more humble affair at €1,000 in cash, not even covering the €2,000 application fee. Ballet Go Backwards – Frank McNally on Patrick Kavanagh's short-lived career as a dance librettist
Patrick Kavanagh is famous for once not attending a dance: a céilí at Billy Brennan's barn in Inniskeen, circa 1930, from which he was exiled by poetic pride or (more likely) the lack of fourpence for a ticket in. Much less remembered now is a dance event he did attend: a ballet at the Queen's Theatre Dublin in 1961, at which he wore a black tie and bestrode the stage, proclaiming himself the work's author. This strange incident came about because of another surprising phenomenon little remembered today – the emergence in a culturally benighted Dublin of the late 1950s of one National Ballet Company, inspired by and emulating the standards of the great Russian troupes. Its artistic director was Patricia Ryan, unhappy wife of John Ryan, the artist and publisher who was a friend to many of Ireland's leading writers then. READ MORE She had studied in London under the celebrated St Petersburg ballerina Nadine Legat, who encouraged her first to teach at, and then run, a Dublin school. At the height of her subsequent success, Ryan commissioned several original works, scored by AJ Potter with various librettists. Among the writers approached to contribute was Samuel Beckett , who declined politely. Kavanagh agreed, for a fee of between £50-£100, although the work then had to be forced out of him over a period, at a pub the Ryans owned and he frequented, with supplementary payments in kind. According to Antoinette Quinn, Kavanagh's biographer, he wrote it 'in dribs and drabs on scraps of paper which he doled out to Patricia Ryan in the Bailey over a couple of months in exchange for doubles of ten-year-old Jameson'. His chosen motif was betting – something he did every day on horses - but in this case borrowing the metaphor of roulette and applying it to a theme of love. Gamble No Gamble, as the piece was called, featured three female archetypes in the colours black, red and white. And not least of the production's challenges was that the performers had to dance on a moving roulette wheel. The Irish Times reviewer found little originality in Kavanagh's plot: 'Its theme seemed to be that man is born to trouble, and ... that man's trouble is mainly women.' But the cast and production were highly praised, and the show was a triumph, in the glory of which the writer - after initial reluctance to attend – happily basked. When Patricia Ryan invited Kavanagh to the premiere, he scoffed (as quoted by Quinn): 'What would I be doin' lookin' at a bunch of wimmen leppin' around the stage?' Then he astonished Ryan by turning up in evening dress. At the end of the performance, 'he and an equally footless Archie Potter were steered on to the stage to take a curtain call, whereupon Kavanagh proceeded to address the audience at length, referring to ... 'my ballet' and taking all the credit for himself. Luckily, Patricia Ryan had a sense of humour.' Ryan went on to organise a weeklong ballet festival in 1962, including performers from the Soviet Union. Catholic fundamentalists picketed the Olympia Theatre in protest at the visitors from 'Godless' Russia. But that event too was a big success, with full houses and standing ovations. Unable to beat them, the Legion of Mary invited the production, Russians included, for religious-themed peace talks over tea and a céilí. The ballet company was struggling with costs and administration, however, a battle for which Ryan felt unqualified. Despite being beautiful, talented and wealthy, she had always been prone to self-doubt. A reluctant teacher and then artistic director, she now felt that in running the operation, she was illustrating the Peter Principle, whereby people are doomed to rise to their level of incompetence. The National Ballet Company was first forced into a merger with Joan Moriarty's Irish Theatre Ballet in Cork. Then the logistics, combined with artistic differences between Ryan and Moriarty, proved too much and the company was wound up in 1964. Ryan had in the meantime left her husband in favour of the painter Patrick Collins, who would become her second husband. But it's another measure of how bohemian Dublin was back then that John Ryan continued to paint the sets for her ballet, while it lasted. Patricia Ryan's story was the subject of a radio documentary, Building A Ballet, by Joanna Marsden, broadcast last year on RTÉ Lyric and featuring unpublished letters from Collins, Beckett, Ninette de Valois and Micheál MacLiammóir. This coming Friday, as part of Heritage Week, it will be aired again at the Lexicon Library in Dún Laoghaire, followed by a panel discussion with Marsden and other guests. The Dublin of Ryan's ballet company is also to be indirectly commemorated at this year's Patrick Kavanagh Weekend in Inniskeen. The annual event takes place on the last weekend in September and the latest instalment will revolve around the screening of a BBC documentary, Three Irish Writers, narrated by the late Anthony Cronin . That in turn was based on Cronin's classic memoir, Dead as Doornails , which includes much mention of the Ryans and the Bailey but focuses mainly on the interlinked lives of Kavanagh, Brian O'Nolan and Brendan Behan .
