Game over? Government tables bill to ban online real money gaming

India Today2 days ago
The government has introduced the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 in the Lok Sabha, aiming to prohibit online games involving cash transactions and betting. Tabled by Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, the proposed law would ban all cash-based transactions for online betting and block banks from processing such funds. In response, the All India Gaming Federation has urged for regulation instead of a ban, cautioning that such a move could damage the industry, push players towards illegal platforms, and lead to job losses.

Itanagar/Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar reaffirmed the Centre's unwavering commitment to the welfare and dignity of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel during his visit to Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday. Addressing jawans of the 31st Battalion at Upiya village in Papumpura district, the Minister declared that the courage and sacrifice of ITBP soldiers will forever remain etched in the hearts of Indians. 'We cannot ignore your hardships, we cannot forget your courage,' he said, adding that the government will ensure that those who protect the nation live with honor, dignity, and comfort. As part of his northeastern tour, Bandi Sanjay first paid a courtesy visit to Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu in Itanagar, where he extended birthday wishes and discussed the development priorities of the state. From there, he proceeded to the ITBP headquarters, where he paid floral tributes at the Martyrs' Ghat and received a ceremonial salute from the jawans. The Minister then inaugurated a series of development projects aimed at improving the living and working conditions of ITBP personnel. These included the newly constructed ASI Mess (Building-45) at the 31st Battalion, residential complexes for officers and subordinate staff at the Animal Training School in Lohitpur, the Administrative Building and Officers Mess, a 10-bed hospital in Basar, and the ASI Mess and residential quarters of the 49th Battalion. Speaking at a gathering of ITBP personnel, Bandi Sanjay praised the force as 'snow warriors' who serve in some of the harshest terrains in the country. He noted that the ITBP is not just a border force but a symbol of India's sovereignty, operating in oxygen-scarce, sub-zero environments from the icy heights of Ladakh to the remote forests of Arunachal Pradesh. He emphasized that the Centre, under the aleadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is taking decisive steps to modernize the Central Armed Police Forces. These efforts include the provision of advanced surveillance equipment, state-of-the-art transport facilities, robust communication infrastructure, and improved housing, medical, and educational amenities. The Minister also highlighted the role of the Himaveer Welfare Association (HWWA) in supporting the families of ITBP personnel, ensuring their well-being through programs focused on health, education, and frequent family interactions. He assured the jawans that the government is prioritizing their transfers and promotions and will continue to address their concerns with urgency and respect. 'Even those who do not wear uniforms but contribute to these projects—engineers, planners, and workers—are serving the nation in their own way,' he added. The event was attended by Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Mama Natung, DGP Anand Mohan, Deputy Commissioner Visakha Yadav, Mayor Tamme Pasing, and senior engineers and officials. After the program, Bandi Sanjay returned to Itanagar for the night and is scheduled to continue his tour with a visit to Meghalaya on Friday.

Pawan condemns attack on forest staff, calls for probe

Vijayawada: Deputy Chief Minister and forests and environment minister Pawan Kalyan has taken a strong stance on the reported assault of forest department officials in Srisailam. Condemning the incident, he directed senior officials to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged involvement of Srisailam MLA Budda Rajasekhara Reddy and his followers, and submit a detailed report. In a post on X, Pawan Kalyan said officials had briefed him about the clash where forest staff were attacked while on duty. 'I have clearly instructed that cases must be registered against those responsible, as per law,' he wrote, underscoring that accountability cannot be compromised. Pawan also aligned his remarks with the Union government's recent move to strengthen accountability among public representatives. Referring to the Constitution Amendment Bill introduced by home minister Amit Shah, he said the proposed law would ensure automatic removal of ministers and elected officials held in custody for over 30 days on serious criminal charges. 'The Central Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is bringing reforms that no one in public life—whether Prime Minister or Chief Minister—will be spared if they violate the law. They will lose their position on the 31st day of arrest,' Pawan said. He stressed that the coalition government led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is committed to discipline and responsibility. 'Even if we commit mistakes, we must be held accountable. Nobody who obstructs officials in discharging their duties will be spared,' he asserted.

‘Either perform or perish': Congress district chiefs put on 6-month probation in MP

BHOPAL: As the Congress works for rebuilding its organisation till the village level in the BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, where it faced drubbing in 2023 assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha polls, a six months' deadline has been set for the 71 newly appointed district presidents for the task. 'There is no scope for any complacency, as every newly appointed district president will have to start with constituting party's committees at gram panchayat and ward levels, besides appointing heads at block, sector and mandals. Entire work will have to be completed within six months,' MP Congress's media wing head and former minister Mukesh Naik told this newspaper on Thursday. 'Only those who live up to these parameters in six months will continue and those whose performance isn't found satisfactory will have to make way for someone better. This is to ensure proper accountability with the key organisational post in each district,' Naik added. The district Congress committee chiefs are scheduled to be in Delhi on August 24, where they will be introduced to the party's top leadership who will spell out the detailed roadmap of tasks ahead for them. The 71 DCC chiefs were appointed last week, based on the report of the AICC-appointed observers in each district under the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan launched in the state by pary Rahul Gandhi in June. As per state Congress sources, the work of rebuilding the Congress in districts will also include working in villages with those who lost the previous gram panchayat polls, despite having polled significant number of votes. The party has also started working at finding the dedicated people for being made booth level agents (BLAs). 'Our target is to build an army of the most dependable and dedicated BLAs at least a year before the next assembly polls and then press them into door-to-door voter physical verification exercise to prevent any possibility of vote theft by the BJP,' a state Congress leader said. Work cut out for them Every new district president will have to start with constituting party's committees at gram panchayat and ward levels, besides appointing heads at block, sector and mandals. Entire work will have to be completed within six months. Only those who live up to these parameters in six months will continue.
