PayPal to create global digital wallet platform with Tenpay, UPI

Business Times11 hours ago
[NEW YORK] PayPal Holdings is launching a platform that will enable customers with domestic digital wallets to easily transact with businesses globally, as the payments giant seeks to capture a bigger chunk of the international market.
The company's PayPal World platform will allow 'interoperability' between the local digital wallets and PayPal, according to a statement. Its initial partners on the platform include MercadoLibre's Mercado Pago, National Payments Corporation of India's UPI and Tencent Holdings' Tenpay Global, meaning customers with those wallets will be able to send money internationally or shop overseas by clicking on the PayPal button without needing to set up a PayPal account from scratch.
'There has never been an interoperable global network that connects wallets together until now,' PayPal chief executive officer Alex Chriss said. 'If you are a small wallet in a small geography in the world, you can now integrate with PayPal World.'
Merchants that use PayPal will also be able to accept payments from those wallets without having to invest in new technology to integrate with the various providers. The platform will go live later this year. The aim is for the platform to also add additional partner wallets in the future, according to the statement.
PayPal cited an example of a consumer in India wanting to buy sneakers from a US-based online store. Instead of having to set up a PayPal account, that person can click on the PayPal button and easily connect with their already-established UPI account.
This product is part of PayPal's recent push to ramp up innovation. Last month, the company announced a new credit card and said earlier this year that it was planning to integrate its stablecoin into more of its products. The company also plans to add artificial intelligence and stablecoin use cases to the digital wallet platform at some point.
'The challenge of moving money across borders is incredibly complex, and yet this platform will make it so simple for nearly two billion consumers and businesses,' Chriss said. BLOOMBERG

China tariff deadline can be rolled forward 90 days: US Treasury chief

WASHINGTON: A deadline for tariffs between the United States and China to snap back to higher levels could be extended in a "90-day increment", US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Wednesday (Jul 23), ahead of trade talks next week. Top officials from the world's two biggest economies are set to meet in Sweden on Monday and Tuesday, with Bessent in the US delegation and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng attending the talks. "We're in a very good place with China now," Bessent told Bloomberg Television on Wednesday. He added that the upcoming talks would likely move beyond rare earths and export controls, and "on to bigger discussions". Asked about the Aug 12 deadline, when reduced tit-for-tat tariffs are due to bounce back to steeper levels, Bessent signaled openness to a significant extension. "I think that we could roll it forward, maybe in a 90-day increment," he said in the interview. "Both sides have de-escalated, and I think we can get into a very good cadence of regular meetings with them," he said. Washington and Beijing had slapped escalating tariffs on each other's exports in April, reaching prohibitive triple-digit levels, but both sides reached an agreement to temporarily lower them after negotiations in Geneva. The truce, however, is set to expire in August.

Moody's profit tops estimates in sign of credit market's rebound

[WASHINGTON] Moody's, a bond grader and financial data provider, reported second-quarter revenue that beat analysts' estimates, underscoring credit markets' relatively quick recovery from April's tariff-fuelled tumult. Moody's adjusted earnings per share of US$3.56 topped analysts' forecasts of US$3.38. Its second-quarter revenue came in at US$1.9 billion or 4.5 per cent higher year-over-year. The company also lifted the lower end of its 2025 profit guidance that it had reduced in April, and said it expects revenue from its ratings unit to increase this year. The results highlight how corporate credit issuance was able to recover in the latter part of the second quarter, even as President Donald Trump's tariffs and the market meltdown that ensued pushed companies to delay issuing debt for several days at the start of April. Moody's earned 18 per cent more from grading blue-chip debt in the second quarter than it did in the same period last year, buoyed by one of the busiest first halves of the year for the market and relatively consistent bond sales following a turbulent period in April. That helped offset the decline Moody's faced in the leveraged loans segment, where its ratings revenue was a third lower than in the second quarter of 2024. Companies had abandoned the bank loan market for 14 straight trading days in April, the longest such streak in data going back more than a decade. But that market has since rebounded sharply, and Moody's said it no longer expects the amount of debt it rates this year to decline by as much as it had indicated in April. BLOOMBERG

ST Index up on Wednesday, mirroring regional indices

[SINGAPORE] The Straits Times Index (STI) closed higher on Wednesday (Jul 23), mirroring regional indices. The STI rose 0.6 per cent or 23.02 points to 4,231.28. Across the broader market, advancers outnumbered decliners 427 to 164 after 2.4 billion shares worth S$1.7 billion changed hands. The trio of local banks closed higher on Wednesday, with DBS up 1.9 per cent or S$0.88 at S$48.13. UOB rose 0.6 per cent or S$0.23 to S$37.23 and OCBC closed up 0.1 per cent or S$0.02 at S$17.21. DFI Retail Group was the top gainer on the STI, closing up 9.2 per cent or US$0.29 at US$3.45. The biggest loser was ST Engineering , which dropped 2.1 per cent or S$0.18 to S$8.27. Across the region, major indices ended higher, with the Kospi gaining 0.4 per cent and the Nikkei 225 up 3.5 cent. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index closed up 1.6 per cent and the KLCI rose 0.7 per cent. The fading momentum of tech stocks is starting to weigh on major US benchmarks, said Jose Torres, senior economist at Interactive Brokers. But the wider US market remains positive, as every other major sector was still upbeat during a quiet day for economic releases. Overreliance on the 'Magnificent 7' – comprising Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Tesla, Meta and Nvidia – is contributing to the market turning defensive, picking up Treasuries, gold and volatility protection instruments, said Torres. With tech and communications services' rally bolstered by looser regulations, financial services could see the same impact as efforts are made to loosen regulations,' he added. 'While less red tape is poised to improve profitability at banks, the lending and capital expenditure implications of reducing regulations are also quite stimulative to the economy because additional funds are opened up for consumption, investment and fixed income purchasing,' said Torres.
