Wait over: South Africa-bound, all-new Mazda CX-5 officially debuts

Hinted at the beginning of this month in a 'once-off' teaser campaign, Mazda has finally debuted the all-new third generation CX-5 coming to South Africa next year.
The Hiroshima-based brand's most important product in recent years, which has moved 4.5-million units over its first two generations, the first completely new CX-5 in nine years adopts a comparatively refined version of the Kodo design language only partially derived from its other siblings.
New from the ground up
Based on a new platform Mazda, the CX-5 gains on all the various dimensional fronts compared to its predecessor with an overall length increase of 115 mm to 4 690 mm, 15 mm on width for a total of 1 860 mm, and 20 mm on height now measuring 1 695 mm.
Its wheelbase also being longer by 115 mm from 2 700 mm to 2 815 mm, the uptakes have also resulted in 61-litres more boot space to 500-litres with the rear seats up.

Set to once again take-up station as Mazda's mid-range SUV in Europe, Australia and South Africa in the absence of the CX-50 sold exclusively in North America, the CX-5's redesign further involves 'recessed' headlight clusters and an upwards flowing bumper line below it.

Derived from the CX-60 positioned above it, the rear facia does incorporate elements from the latter, as well as the BMW X1 when viewed from certain angles.
A further new addition is the removal of the corporate Mazda logo on the bootlid replaced by a block letter MAZDA badge similar to the new Opel Grandland.
'Uncluttered' new interior
Described at the time of the teaser campaign as 'human-centric' and 'uncluttered', the interior represents the biggest change from the previous CX-5 with a minimalist design modelled on that of the all-electric 6e.
Besides a new steering wheel, still with albeit new physical buttons and Mazda name scripting, the infotainment display now becomes a freestanding setup in sizes of 12.9-inches or 15.6-inches.

In a contradiction of previous statements, both displays are touchscreen only as the previous rotary selector dial has fallen by the wayside.
Flanked by a new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, the now renamed 'simplified' layout has resulted in the cabin doing away with conventional buttons for touch icons related to functions such as the climate control and audio system accessed at the base of the infotainment display.
Kept, though, the traditional gear lever and 'single-piece' centre console. Upgraded materials and the first-time availability of ambient lighting rounds the interior off.
Petrol and hybrid but no diesel
Up front, and despite previous rumours alluding to the CX-5 following its arch rival, the new Toyota RAV4 in being powered solely by hybrid powerunits, the initial line-up still includes a conventional petrol engines, but only in select markets.
Omitting any form of plug-in hybrid assistance, the range starts off with the existing 2.5 SkyActiv-G, now without the turbocharger offered in certain markets, and as the base engine now that the 2.0-litre has been dropped.
Set to be offered in Australia and North America, the unit develops 132kW/242Nm and is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. All-wheel-drive is standard from the start.
For Europe, the same engine gains a 24-volt mild-hybrid system, but with reduced outputs of 104kW/238Nm. The same transmission remains, however, buyers will the option of front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive.
Having been dropped towards the end of the current CX-5's lifecycle, the 2.2-litre SkyActiv-D turbodiesel engine won't be renewed and instead, will be replaced by the still under-development SkyActiv-Z hybrid in 2027.
Here in 2026
On-sale in Europe, Australia and North America at the beginning of next year, the CX-5, as mentioned, has been given approval for South Africa as part of four new models the brand will debut in 2026.
'The new CX-5 will debut in the third quarter of this year and probably hit our shores in early 2026. It is the first product we are really, really excited about,' Mazda South Africa CEO, Craig Roberts, said in a podcast with Moneyweb earlier this year.
Expect more details regarding price and specification to emerge next year.

South African intellectuals propose new strategies for economic empowerment

"One of the most important consequences of the BEE combined with public sector salaries is that it disincentivises, especially young black professionals, to become entrepreneurs. It incentivises them to become public sector employees, and this is why South Africa is not building new companies." Gumede, a leading expert on economic development, proposed alternative empowerment strategies that focus on pragmatism and inclusivity. Gumede argued that the current BEE policy has benefited only a small elite group of black individuals, while leaving the majority of South Africans behind. "We need to shift to alternative optics of empowerment," he said. "The way empowerment is structured now is based on giving politically connected ANC leaders and trade union leaders benefits in existing companies. We need to bring small companies into supply chains and manufacturing so that the supply chains are in manufacturing. Secondly, we need to reward skills training and reward employment so that empowerment becomes that if you employ young people.' Gumede said pragmatism was a philosophy that must be implemented in South Africa. 'From South Africa's point of view, we need to focus all our state, economic, and nation-building initiatives on pragmatism… We need to look at what works and what is in the interest of everyone. We need to remove anti-growth policies,' he said. The conference also discussed the need to reduce the public sector wage bill, which is seen as unsustainable and detrimental to economic growth. Campher, an economist and policy analyst, argued that the government should prioritise infrastructure development and job creation over social interventions. "The current public sector wage bill must be reduced drastically to afford the building of public infrastructure," Campher said. "Our roads, harbours, and railway system are in a dilapidated state and must be fixed." Sarupen, a businessman and entrepreneur, proposed a Basic Employment Grant scheme that would provide individuals with a grant in exchange for rendering basic services at the municipal level. Sarupen argued that this approach would not only provide a safety net for the poor but also promote entrepreneurship and skills development. "A Basic Employment Grant should also be integrated with a skills and entrepreneurial development programme," Sarupen said. "Continuing to hand out grants for free perpetuates and has entrenched a dependency culture." One of the attendees of the conference, which was held in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, said that it highlighted the need for alternative empowerment strategies that prioritise inclusivity, pragmatism, and entrepreneurship. "If we rethink the current BEE policy and promote small businesses and job creation, South Africa can stimulate economic growth and reduce poverty and inequality," he said.

New Mazda CX-5 confirmed for South Africa in 2026: first local details released

Image: Supplied Hot on the heels of its global debut earlier this month, Mazda South Africa has confirmed the local launch timing and other details about the third-generation CX-5. The newly redesigned SUV will hit our shores during the second half of 2026, although final launch dates are still pending, Mazda SA's marketing head Deolinda Da Costa revealed. She also confirmed that local versions will be powered by a 2.5-litre normally aspirated petrol engine. Next Stay Close ✕ Although pricing will only be confirmed closer to launch, the presumed discontinuation of the current 2.0-litre engine and the third-generation vehicle's larger size - with overall length growing by 115mm - are likely to push it upmarket. The current CX-5 costs between R570,500 and R688,400. Da Costa also confirmed that mild hybrid versions could follow at a later date, but initially, the company would focus on the 'robust' regular 2.5L engine as it aligns with local driving preferences and conditions. ''The next-generation CX-5 marks a significant milestone for Mazda globally. Customers can also look forward to increased interior space and comfort, Da Costa says, as well as an updated Human Machine Interface, offering streamlined control of apps, navigation and vehicle settings. In overseas markets, it is available with the largest touchscreen ever to be offered on a Mazda product, measuring 15.6 inches across. While the current Mazda CX-5 is showing its age, Mazda SA says it is offering flexible finance options on the older model through its Mazda Assured programme, which will give customers the opportunity to 'seamlessly' upgrade to the new generation model when it arrives next year. Subaru unveils new front-wheel-drive Toyota-based Uncharted EV
Subaru has whipped the wraps off the Uncharted, a Toyota-based all-electric crossover, which will initially be available in front-wheel drive. The Subaru Uncharted shares its e-TNGA platform with the new Toyota CH-R+, but receives Subaru-specific styling and chassis tuning to set it apart from the crossover/SUV it is based on. Significantly, the Uncharted debuts as Subaru's only front-wheel-drive model, with all-wheel-drive variants set to be introduced at a later stage. The FWD-equipped Premium model features a single electric motor that generates 164kW. The AWD GT and Sport variants will produce 544kW from a dual electric-motor setup. Subaru claims the more powerful variants are capable of completing the 0-100km/h sprint in less than five seconds. All trims utilise a 74.7kWh battery pack, which supports 150kW DC fast charging. Plugged into the latter facility, Subaru says the battery is capable of recharging from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes. An 11kW AC onboard charger that can be used to charge at home is also present. The single- and twin electric-motor models offer 480km and 466km of all-electric operating range, respectively, the company says. Inside, the Uncharted plays host to a 14-inch, touch-enabled infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen mirroring, dual wireless smartphone chargers, and dedicated USB-C ports for rear passengers. Standard safety features include the firm's EyeSight driver assistance technology, adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance alert, and a driver-monitoring system. Sport and GT trims receive X‑Mode, a panoramic sunroof, a heated steering wheel, a surround-view camera array, and distinct upholstery options.
