Wayang Santri: Unique Tradition Of Javanese Commmunity With Moral Teachings

MUAR, July 21 (Bernama) — Wayang Santri stage performances may still be unfamiliar to many Malaysians, but this unique art form holds deep roots in the Javanese community across the Indonesian archipelago, where it has been passed down from generation to generation.
According to a young millennial Wayang Santri puppeteer, Ki Haryo Susilo Enthus Susmono, many Malaysians still mistakenly associate Wayang Santri with wayang kulit, particularly the well-known versions from Kelantan and Terengganu.
He said it was to address this misconception that the Wayang Santri stage tour was launched in Johor and Kuala Lumpur, starting July 19, to introduce the traditional art form to Malaysian audiences.
'Beyond serving as a platform for cross-cultural artistic exchange, the tour also aims to strengthen cultural ties between Malaysia and Indonesia, which share a deep and inseparable heritage.
'Unlike wayang kulit, which is performed behind a screen, Wayang Santri or also known as wayang golek, is performed live using wooden puppets,' he told Bernama after the Malaysia Wayang Santri Tour 2025: Indonesia-Malaysia Cultural Diplomacy at Keraton Mbah Anang here recently.
Keraton Mbah Anang, a centre for cultural activities rooted in Javanese customs and traditions, served as the venue for the Wayang Santri performance in Johor.
Ki Haryo explained that the Wayang Santri performances are distinctive in their emphasis on moral teachings and Islamic dakwah narratives, with the stories often about the Islamic kingdom of Sunan Kalijaga and are interwoven with contemporary elements, while remaining true to the original concept and values.
Ki Haryo, who inherited the puppeteering skills from his father, the legendary Ki Enthus Susmono, shared that each performance is supported by 17 to 20 musicians who play a variety of traditional instruments, including the demung, saron, gong, bonang and Sundanese drums, alongside modern instruments like the violin and keyboard.

Special team formed in Perlis to monitor entertainment activities

KANGAR: A special monitoring team has been established in Perlis to scrutinise entertainment activities held in the state, both prior to and during the events. State Religious Affairs, Education, Human Capital and Human Resources Committee chairman Muhammad Azmir Azizan said that all entertainment-related events in Perlis are subject to the Perlis State Entertainment Enactment 1987. He said organisers must first obtain approval from the Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) before hosting any entertainment activities. "On July 10, the Perlis Mufti Department held an engagement session with several stakeholders to coordinate entertainment regulations in the state. "Among the outcomes was the formation of an entertainment monitoring team that will review and oversee events, including rehearsals and final performances, to ensure full compliance with the approved guidelines," he said. He was responding to a question by Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Perikatan Nasional - Bintong) during the Second Meeting of the Third Session of the 15th Perlis State Legislative Assembly at the Kompleks Seri Putera here today. Fakhrul had asked whether the state government intended to update and enforce existing entertainment guidelines, citing frequent violations by event organisers. He said Islam does not forbid entertainment, but any such activity must adhere to Islamic principles and uphold moral values. Azmir added that organisers are also required to submit a song list in advance, ensuring it reflects appropriate themes such as nature, philosophy, unity, or programme-specific messages. "For applications to be considered, they must be submitted to MPK at least 30 working days before the scheduled event. "Applicants must also include a detailed list of performances, the names and photographs of all performers, and the songs to be presented," he said. He said all applications would be presented to the state government for review and approval. "The enforcement will be in accordance with the 1987 Enactment and the approval terms issued by MPK.

Malaysian Man Goes Viral For Being Credited In Marvel's 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps'

What could be better than seeing Malaysia mentioned or featured in a Marvel film? Having local talent involved in the production, of course! Whether on screen as an extra or behind the scenes, it's a point of pride to know that Malaysians are contributing to major Hollywood blockbusters. One such Malaysian has now been credited not for just one Marvel project, but several. In a post shared on Threads, 3D generalist Ahmad Hamidullah revealed that he was one of the many visual effects artists involved in the studio's upcoming film, 'The Fantastic Four: First Step'. 'Alhamdulillah. Another year, another Marvel movie. This time, I was credited in The Fantastic Four 🥳,' he wrote, sharing a screenshot of the end credits featuring his name alongside his team. Obviously, since the film was a huge success, Ahmad's post quickly went viral, with many expressing curiosity as to how he landed the job, what specific aspect of the film he worked on and how much he was paid for the project. The local artist explained that he works at the Kuala Lumpur branch of Base FX, a company specialising in visual effects, animation, high-end creature and character work, fluid simulations, and other dynamic effects. The company has contributed to several blockbuster hits, including 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' and the Oscar-nominated 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. When asked about his role in 'The Fantastic Four', Ahmad shared that he was responsible for texturing and primarily handled 3D assets for the film, specifically for characters and elements such as Moleman, Subterranea, a retro bus, and various underground scenes. For those curious about his salary, that's quite a sensitive topic, so you're going to have to ask him personally about the payment for these projects. As Ahmad mentioned that he had worked on several Marvel projects, many were curious to know which ones they were. While he did not specify in his original post, his IMDb profile reveals that he was part of the visual effects team for the 'Deadpool & Wolverine' film as well as the 'Ironheart' series. It's so amazing to have our local talent shine in international blockbuster hits. We hope that more Malaysians will receive the same opportunity to work on these projects or even star in them!
