Chinese Ambassador Zhao Weiping Donates Books to the National Library of Namibia
The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture of Namibia held a handover ceremony for the donation. Mr. Erastus Haitengela, Executive Director of the Ministry, thanked the Embassy for the contribution and noted that these books enriched the collection of the National Library and will be welcomed by the Namibian readers.
In his remarks, Ambassador Zhao said he hopes and believes that these books will help the general public with deeper understanding of China's political philosophy, government policies and rich culture.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is taking a leadership role at the upcoming Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM16) in Busan, South Korea, bringing governments, international organizations and industry together to accelerate global access to clean cooking. The initiative underscores Washington's commitment to advancing reliable, affordable, and healthy energy solutions worldwide, with U.S.–Africa cooperation being particularly critical to expanding clean cooking access and infrastructure across the continent. While more than one billion people have gained access to clean cooking in recent years – largely through adoption of LPG – nearly two billion people still rely on polluting fuels, with Africa representing a significant share of those affected. The African Energy Chamber (AEC) has emphasized that access to clean cooking in Africa is not just an energy challenge, but a critical development issue affecting health, economic opportunity and dignity, particularly for women and children. Expanding reliable, affordable LPG solutions across the continent requires robust infrastructure and strong collaboration with international partners, including the U.S. At CEM16, the U.S. DOE will spotlight the urgency of closing this gap, calling for strategies and investment to scale up clean cooking fuels and infrastructure and seeking to work with new partners and stakeholders to mobilize financing, deploy proven technologies and accelerate progress toward universal clean cooking access. The U.S. and African nations are working together to scale up clean cooking fuels and deploy the infrastructure necessary to reach every household, with LPG recognized as a practical, reliable and scalable solution. A Minister-CEO roundtable – Fueling Life: Reliable Energy Access for All – will spotlight approaches to financing, deploying infrastructure and scaling technologies that expand access to clean cooking fuels. The session will feature opening remarks from Michael Kelly, Deputy Managing Director of the World Liquid Gas Association, and James P. Danly, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy, followed by interventions from senior policymakers including Khalid Almehaid, Deputy Minister for Sustainability and Climate Change, Ministry of Energy, Saudi Arabia; Hohyeon Lee, Second Vice Minister, Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, South Korea; Samantha Graham-Maré, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Electricity and Energy, South Africa; and Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director-General for Energy, European Commission. Private sector leaders will also take the stage to discuss solutions for accelerating clean cooking access and the role of industry in mobilizing investment. NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC, and Jonathan Fancher, CEO of Petredec Global, will join the discussion to share perspectives from the global gas and African energy sectors. 'Expanding access to reliable, affordable clean cooking in Africa goes beyond energy and requires strong partnerships and infrastructure investment. Ghana: Vice President (VP) leads gov't delegation in condolence visits to families of helicopter crash victims
Vice President Naana Jane Opoku‑Agyemang on Tuesday led a government delegation to pay courtesy calls on the families of five victims of the 6 August military helicopter crash. The visits, which followed last Friday's state funeral, were intended to comfort the bereaved and to assure them of the Government's continued support. The Vice‑President reiterated the administration's commitment to work closely with the families to address their welfare needs, particularly those of the widows and children left behind. The families visited were those of the late Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director General, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO); Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, Deputy National Security Coordinator (Human Security); Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, former Defence Minister; and Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology. Professor Opoku‑Agyemang, who is acting President while President Mahama is on official duties in Japan, held separate private meetings with each family to listen to their concerns and to convey the nation's sympathy. Nigeria: Tinubu scraps 5% telecoms levy
President Bola Tinubu has scrapped the controversial 5% excise duty on telecommunications services, a policy reversal aimed at reducing the financial burden on Nigerians and boosting growth in the country's digital economy. The Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Aminu Maida, announced the decision during a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday. 'The 5% excise duty is no longer in effect,' Maida said. 'Initially, it was only suspended, but the President has now completely removed it. I was present when the issue was raised, and he firmly said, 'No, we cannot place this burden on Nigerians.' That directive has now been captured in the new legislation.' The scrapped telecoms evy, which applied to mobile voice and data services, had drawn criticism from consumer groups and telecom operators who argued that it would increase the cost of digital access and threaten the viability of businesses already struggling with rising operational expenses. Recall that Tinubu first suspended the telecoms levy in July 2023 as part of a broader effort to review Nigeria's tax system and ease multiple levies on businesses and households. However, the issue resurfaced in October 2024 when the National Assembly proposed reinstating the tax alongside levies on gaming, betting, and lottery services. With this latest decision, the federal government hopes to improve digital access, strengthen telecom operators, and support Nigeria's expanding digital economy.
