Watch: Lee Byung-hyun kept 'Squid Game' casting secret from his mom
June 18 (UPI) -- Lee Byung-hyun says he didn't tell anyone, not even his mother, that he had been cast in Netflix's Korean drama series Squid Game.
The actor, 54, plays Hwang In-ho, aka the Front Man, on the show, which follows various contestants in a life-or-death game. He discussed the experience on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday.
"Netflix asked me to keep it as a secret, so I didn't say it to anybody -- even my close friends and mom," he shared. "So one day, after Squid Game opened, my mom called me and she yelled at me: 'How could you not tell me that?'"
The streamer announced a third and final season of the series, but Byung-hyun wasn't quick to share any details.
He did say more players will learn the Front Man's identity in the upcoming season, and that there could ultimately a spinoff for his character.
"I'm not sure about that," he added. "But there's a possibility and we'll never know what happens."
The actor said he was surprised by how well the show was received.
"When I first read the script -- it was a very, very interesting story with a very unique structure, but at the same time it was too experimental. So I thought either it's going to be a huge hit or a complete flop," he said.
Season 3 arrives on Netflix June 27.
A previously-released teaser shows contestants will be participating in a new game.

The ‘Wednesday Season 2 Part 2' Trailer Welcomes Back a Familiar Face
Now that we're just over a week out from the first half of the season 2 release of Netflix's The Addams Family remake, Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega, the streamer has finally released a new trailer for its second half. The trailer starts nightmarishly, at least for Wednesday, with her waking up in a hospital bed. Although she's not greeted by Momma Monster herself, Lady Gaga, who has yet to make an appearance on the show despite all the hype surrounding her mysterious involvement, Wednesday is met with a familiar face, fan-favorite character Principal Weems, played by Gwendoline Weems' return comes as a surprise, seeing as how last season saw the loathsome head of Nevermore Academy meet her end. Thinking Wednesday also bought the farm after her encounter with Tyler (Hunter Doohan) at the end of season 2's first half, Weems took immense pleasure in revealing that she'll be nagging at Wednesday inside her thoughts as a kind of gothic Jiminy Cricket tag-along as Wednesday gets back to her premonition quest to save her best friend, Enid (Emma Myers), from certain doom. Sprinkled throughout the rest of the trailer is narration by Wednesday, reminding both herself and the viewers that she still has other matters to attend to. Mainly, her family's seemingly endless well of dark secrets bubbling to the surface, and Tyler being on the loose with plans to put Wednesday and Enid in an early grave. While the news of the day is that viewers won't have to wait all that long to get the final half of the split in twain season, fans can take solace in knowing that there's more Wednesday mayhem in store for them in the future beyond the second slice. Namely, a third season is in the works as well as a spin-off. While details on both fronts have been kept under wraps, showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have expressed interest in keeping the show going for at least seven seasons. Our money is on the plans for a spin-off likely taking the focus off of Ortega, should Hollywood come a-knocking for her to do some acting outside of Netflix's backyard. Regardless, Wednesday continues to be a booming success on the streamer. Shortly after Wednesday season two part one premiered on Netflix, Variety reported that the new season has already matched the first season's streaming performance. With Lady Gaga still to make her presence felt on the screen, the show is likely to continue performing well for the streamer and delight fans as it closes out its second season. The songstress, 35, unveiled the cover of her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, and shared the track list Wednesday. The cover features Swift partially submerged in water while wearing a jeweled showgirl outfit. The album title is written in red glitter. Her 12th album will include the songs "The Fate of Ophelia," "Elizabeth Taylor," "Opalite," "Father Figure," "Eldest Daughter," "Ruin the Friendship," "Actually Romantic," "Wi$h Li$t," "Wood, "Cancelled!," "Honey" and "The Life of a Showgirl" with Sabrina Carpenter. Swift also released images of herself in various costumes featuring rhinestones, fishnet and feathers. She announced her upcoming album during Wednesday's episode of the New Heights podcast hosted by her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and his brother retired NFL athlete Jason Kelce. They shared a snippet from the show on Instagram Tuesday. The album is due Oct. 3, and arrives following the news that Swift bought back her music. "It is something that I was working on while I was in Europe, on the Eras tour," she said on New Heights. "...I would be playing shows. I'd do like three shows in a row, I'd have three days off, I'd fly to Sweden, go back to the tour and actually like working on this, I was physically exhausted at this point in the tour. He will take the UBS Arena stage in New York at 8 p.m. EDT, and the event will broadcast live on CBS, MTV and Paramount+. LL Cool J was previously the Video Vanguard Award winner, and he hosted opposite Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow in 2022, a press release states. This time, he will host solo.
