Land identified for Tamil Nadu's first Medical Devices Testing Laboratory in Coimbatore
COIMBATORE: After around three months of no progress, the Coimbatore district administration has identified land for constructing the state's first Medical Devices Testing Laboratory at Kavundampalayam.
Revenue department land, spanning around 1.28 acres, has been identified for the project. "A portion of the land (around 50 cents) has been earmarked to construct the Kavundampalayam police station while the rest would be allocated to the drug administration department. The joint committee comprising the district administration and the drug administration department, along with the health officials, visited the location at Jeeva Nagar in Kavundampalayam on Thursday and held a discussion about the possibilities of establishing the laboratory," said sources, adding that the land will be officially handed over to the drug administration department soon.
Testing A and B category medical devices at government-owned laboratories are a part of the Medical Devices Rules, under the Drug and Cosmetics (D&C) Act, which came into force in January 2018. However, the drug administration department in Tamil Nadu has not performed any tests on medical devices due to the lack of a specialised laboratory in the state.
Based on a request from the state government, the central government approved the plan to establish a well-equipped NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) accredited laboratory for testing medical devices, including in-vitro diagnostics, at Coimbatore. In a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the central and state governments under the Strengthening of State Drug Regulatory System scheme, Rs 29.67 crore was allocated for the project in mid-2024-25, in a fund sharing ratio of 60:40 by the centre and the state, respectively. Even though it was announced in December 2024, there was no progress. Recently, Health Minister Ma Subramanian announced the project during the discussion on demands for grants in the Assembly.
On April 22, a TNIE report highlighted that the delay in allocating land had affected the progress of setting up the lab. District Collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar had also assured that the land identification process will be wrapped up at the earliest.

During the inauguration, CM Saini showered flower petals on the runners to encourage them and later addressed the gathering. A total of Rs 3.46 lakh in cash prizes was awarded to the top 20 winners. Among them were Gaurav and Monika from Sonipat, each receiving Rs 51,000. The marathon not only promoted yoga but also raised awareness about sports, culture, and environmental consciousness. Yoga Campaign Supports National Development Linking the yoga initiative with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a 'Developed India by 2047', CM Saini said, 'Drug abuse is a social evil that obstructs national development. Our youth are the nation's greatest assets, and protecting them from drugs is our duty.' He added that the International Yoga Day theme, 'One Earth, One Health', aligns with Haryana's campaign for a yoga-filled and drug-free society. TN's Katpadi to get first govt hospital, CM Stalin to inaugurate on June 25
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will inaugurate Katpadi's first full-fledged government taluk hospital in Serkadu village, Vellore district, on June 25. The Rs 14.30 crore facility, built by the Public Works Department (PWD), is nearing completion, with final touches underway. PWD Assistant Engineer K. Sundar (Katpadi division) confirmed that the new 60-bed hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including ECG units, CT scan services, and fully functional surgical theatres. The hospital also ensures uninterrupted power supply, backed by diesel generators. Currently, the only government medical facility in Katpadi is an ageing Primary Health Centre (PHC), which operates between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily except Sundays. On average, it handles 500-700 outpatients per day, most of whom are referred to Adukkamparai for specialised treatment. Spread across 15 acres, the new taluk hospital features separate departments for cardiology, neurology, paediatrics, nephrology, obstetrics, and gynaecology. Dedicated wards have been created for emergency and accident cases, cancer treatment, sedation, and radiology. There are also five consultation rooms for outpatient services. Modern civic amenities have also been incorporated. The hospital includes two lifts, one each for patients and staff, drinking water facilities and washrooms on every floor, a rainwater harvesting system, and solar panels for lighting the premises. To improve accessibility, the facility includes designated parking for both two-wheelers and cars, and 24x7 surveillance through CCTV cameras. Health department officials have stated that public bus services to the hospital will be enhanced to ensure better connectivity for patients and visitors. The inauguration will be part of CM Stalin's two-day visit to Ranipet, Vellore, and Tirupattur districts on June 25 and 26. During the tour, he will also distribute welfare assistance to government scheme beneficiaries and review ongoing development projects. Residents have welcomed the new facility, calling it a much-needed healthcare lifeline for the region. The area includes more than 40 farming villages, and until now, residents had to travel over 15 km to access advanced medical care at the Government Medical College Hospital in Adukkamparai, on the outskirts of Vellore.

CM's health insurance helps 81 lakh patients in last four years
CHENNAI: Over the past four years, more than 81 lakh beneficiaries received free treatment worth Rs 5,878 crore under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, while the emergency 'Innuyir Kaappom Nammai Kaappom' initiative saved 7.4 lakh accident victims at a cost of Rs 648.12 crore, read an official release issued by the government on Saturday. The release said the government has distributed nutrition kits worth Rs 1,149.24 crore to 54 lakh pregnant women and 31.75 lakh mothers. Five new hospitals were established at Rs 1,046 crore in the state, alongside Rs 151 crore spent on India's second National Centre for Ageing in Guindy. The state-of-the-art Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital has served over 8 lakh patients, while the Chennai Periyar Government Hospital in Kolathur was inaugurated with six floors and 560 beds. The Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam scheme, backed by Rs 681.64 crore, delivered doorstep healthcare to over 200 lakh people. School-based vision screenings provided free spectacles to 13.11 lakh children. Tamil Nadu's healthcare achievements are further reflected in its reduced Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) of 8 per 1,000 live births, a substantial drop from the national average of 28. The state clinched 545 awards for medical excellence, including in rural medicine, TB elimination, and organ transplantation.
