9 Spellbinding Songs About Magic

New York Times07-02-2025

Image Lady Gaga debuted her madcap video for 'Abracadabra' in a Mastercard commercial during the Grammy Awards on Sunday night.
If you've noticed anyone walking around with their paws up, speaking in tongues and raving about the floor being on fire, allow me to explain: In an ad Sunday night during the Grammy Awards, Lady Gaga debuted a new single. It's called 'Abracadabra,' and it's a gloriously nostalgic return to form, reminiscent of the infectious gibberish hook of 'Bad Romance' and the go-for-broke electro-sleaze she perfected on 'The Fame Monster' and 'Born This Way.' Rejoice, ye elder millennials: A star has been reborn.
As I've been strutting around all week with 'abracadabra, abra-cadaaaabra' on an endless loop in my head, I've been thinking about how many great songs throughout pop music reference magic — as a tried-and-true metaphor for the mysteries of love, or just as a thematic excuse to get a little weird. (For Gaga, it's a little bit of both, but always with emphasis on the latter.)
The '60s gave us spellbinding classics like the Lovin' Spoonful's 'Do You Believe in Magic?' and the Drifters' 'This Magic Moment.' But 'Abracadabra' is just the latest proof that pop still has magic on the mind: In the last year or so, there have been not one but two Top 20 hits called 'Houdini.' (Though never forget that Kate Bush beat them both to it.)
Since a definitive playlist of every song ever to conjure magic would be incredibly long and contain quite a few overindulgent duds, this collection reflects my own tastes. Which is to say that it omits Eminem's 'Houdini,' as well as the song it samples, that other 'Abracadabra,' by the Steve Miller Band. Personal preference! But it does feature enchanting tunes from Electric Light Orchestra, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Screamin' Jay Hawkins and, of course, Gaga's latest incantation.

Lady Gaga Sends Several Hit Singles Back To The Same Chart

Lady Gaga sits just one space away from returning to No. 1 on both of Billboard's worldwide rankings of the most popular songs on the planet. "Die With a Smile," her career-defining duet with Bruno Mars, remains a No. 2 smash months into its tenure on the two lists. That vintage-sounding composition is not the pop star's only success at the moment on the global rosters. Several other fan favorites from throughout Gaga's time as a superstar appear on the lists — and two classics even manage to return to the same tally simultaneously. A pair of Gaga's popular singles reappear together on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S., the tally that ranks the most consumed songs around the world without including streaming or purchasing activity from American audiences. Its sister ranking, the Billboard Global 200, is more all-encompassing, and does feature plays and purchases from America. Gaga's A Star Is Born track "Always Remember Us This Way" is her highest reentry on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. this week, as it breaks back in at No. 185. Despite being several years old, the tune has only spent three frames on this ranking since it debuted just last month. Only a few spots further down comes "Just Dance," her collaboration with Colby O'Donis that helped launch her into the pop music stratosphere. The Grammy-nominated cut reenters at No. 198 on the 200-spot list, and it also launched on this list in May of 2025. Gaga fills eight spaces on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. this week. "Die With a Smile" holds at No. 2, and in between that cut and her returning older smashes are "Abracadabra" (No. 14), "Poker Face" (No. 76), "Judas" (No. 149), "Shallow" with Bradley Cooper (No. 161) and "Bad Romance" (No. 162). Of that bunch, "Die With a Smile," "Abracadabra," "Poker Face," and "Bad Romance" also appear on the Billboard Global 200, while the other four cuts do not.

King Charles Makes Major Change to Trooping the Colour Tradition, Signaling the End of an Era

King Charles will be celebrated at Trooping the Colour on June 14—the annual birthday parade for the monarch. 2025 will mark the King's third birthday parade since taking the throne on September 8, 2022. Amid his ongoing cancer treatment, Charles will no longer ride in the parade on horseback, and will instead ride in a carriage alongside wife Queen he continues treatment for cancer following his 2024 diagnosis, King Charles will make a permanent change for Trooping the Colour, the annual birthday parade held in his honor every June. The King—who The Times noted is 'one of the royal family's most accomplished equestrians'—will no longer ride on horseback at the yearly event, with the outlet reporting he 'has hung up his riding boots.' Instead, Charles will travel in a carriage for the procession from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade and back at the event, which this year is on June 14. 'He is not expected to ride at the parade again,' the publication added. The King rode on horseback in 2023 for his first Trooping the Colour as sovereign; his mother, Queen Elizabeth, hadn't ridden on horseback since 1986, the year she turned 60 years old. Afterwards, the Queen traveled via carriage from 1987 until her last Trooping the Colour in 2022, which also doubled as her Platinum Jubilee celebrating her historic 70 years on the throne. Following his cancer diagnosis—which was announced publicly on February 5 of last year—the King rode in a carriage; this announcement makes that change permanent, it seems. Meanwhile, the King's sister Princess Anne—who turns 75 years old in August—plans to ride on horseback this year alongside Prince William. This will be the Princess Royal's first public appearance on horseback since her accident involving a horse last June that left her with a concussion and in the hospital for five days. The Telegraph reported that Charles' weekly cancer treatment—while it continues in a 'very positive direction, as reflected with the very full national and international diary program,' as the palace put it—will likely last for the remainder of his life. According to the outlet, it is understood that 'he may die 'with' cancer, but not 'of' cancer,' the publication reported, with The Telegraph adding that Charles and his wife Queen Camilla are likely to never move into Buckingham Palace following the completion of its restoration in 2027. That said, there's hope that the King isn't going anywhere anytime soon—tentative planning has begun for his 80th birthday celebrations, which will take place in 2028, and there's even talk that Charles might reunite with his son Prince Harry when the Duke of Sussex travels to the U.K. for the 2027 Invictus Games, which will take place in Birmingham, England. Lars von Trier threw water at Bryce Dallas Howard and insulted her father

Lars von Trier threw a glass of water in Bryce Dallas Howard's face and insulted her father because he wanted to see her "angry face". The 'Jurassic World' actress worked with the director on 2005 film 'Manderlay' and she revealed her first meeting with the moviemaker on the set in Norway came as a bit of a shock as she was subjected to a barrage of insults and a jibe about her director dad Ron Howard. Bryce told The Times newspaper: "He started insulting me: 'Your father's a terrible filmmaker.' I went: 'Lars, what are you trying to see?' and he said: 'Your angry face. I don't know what it looks like'." She went on to reveal von Trier then threw a glass of water in her face and Bryce responded by doing the same to him. The actress added: "So I threw a glass of water in his face. He goes: 'Why did you do that?' and got up and left. That was my introduction to the Lars von Trier experience." However, Bryce is adamant she wasn't upset by the encounter. She explained: "It wasn't like I went to my room and cried or anything. I was sort of delighted by it." Bryce's dad started as an actor before moving behind the camera and she hopes to do more directing in the future, but she will never give up acting completely like he did. She added: "I don't want to let go of acting as my dad has done. That would be really heartbreaking because I learn so much being on a set. I have so much fun.' Bryce is close to her filmmaker father and he recently shared a sweet tribute to her on Instagram to mark her 44th birthday earlier this year - declaring she has far exceeded the family's expectations with her huge success in the movie business. Ron wrote: "Happy Birthday, Daughter! You've always made your mom and me happy and incredibly proud. "But the scope of what you've achieved with your family and career and the future you are building exceeds our wildest hopes from back when you were this adorable kid we loved so much." It came just a day after Bryce shared her own tribute to her dad on his birthday, writing in a post on Instagram: "I love you so much Dad, more than words can say."
