The Boston Red Sox rotation has been better as of late, but overall, the group has been inconsistent. The team just shut down any hope of All-Star Tanner Houck rejoining for the final stretch.
Garrett Crochet has carried the rotation all season. Recently, Lucas Giolito and Brayan Bello have started to pitch better, and the team acquired Dustin May at the trade deadline.
Houck was placed on the injured list on May 14, but was transferred to the 60-day injured list. On Saturday, Alex Cora announced that Houck's season is over, and he will undergo Tommy John surgery, according to MassLive's Christopher Smith.
Houck was an All-Star last season, posting a 3.12 ERA in 30 starts. This year, he had an 8.04 ERA before landing on the injured list. He was working his way back before he was returned to the IL from his rehab assignment after reaggravating his injury.

DETROIT, MI - MAY 12: Tanner Houck #89 of the Boston Red Sox checks a baseball after giving up a home run to Gleyber Torres of the Detroit Tigers during the first inning at Comerica Park on May 12, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan. MoreNot only is his season over, but next season may be over for him as well. The typical timeline to get back on the mound after Tommy John surgery is 12-15 months. There is a real chance Houck does not take the mound again until 2027 for the Red Sox.
Even though he had struggled this year, there was hope that he could provide quality innings for the team when he returned. Now, the team will rely on Crochet, Giolito, Bello, May and Walker Buehler to carry it through October. Besides Crochet, all of the Red Sox starters have had their fair share of struggles, but things are looking up for them.
Buehler has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last four starts, including two quality starts. The Red Sox are 3-1 in those games. Giolito has a 2.17 ERA since June 10 and the Red Sox are 7-2 in those games. Bello has a 2.83 ERA since the start of June, and has gone at least six innings in nine of his 11 starts since then.

Walker Buehler pitches six scoreless innings to lead Red Sox past Padres

The Red Sox (65-52) have won eight of their past nine games and 10 of 12. Advertisement In his career, Buehler is 7-1 with a 1.67 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in 13 regular-season starts against the Padres, almost all of that coming as an NL West foe with the Dodgers. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Buehler's only other scoreless game this season was May 20, when he got ejected after 2⅓ innings in his return from the injured list. With his 20th start of the year, Buehler hit a $500,000 bonus, per the terms of his contract. He would make another $500,000 for reaching each of 22, 24, 26, and 28 starts. The game was all but decided by the eighth inning, when Connor Wong turned it into a blowout with a three-run double into the left-field corner. He had more RBIs on that swing than he had totaled over the entire season (two). He had been 0 for 30 on the year with runners in scoring position. Advertisement Masataka Yoshida capped his big night with a two-run home run in the ninth. He finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a double. Although they came out on the better side of the Buehler/Nick Pivetta matchup, it was a bit of a sliding-doors moment for the Red Sox, who were interested in retaining Pivetta last offseason before pivoting to Buehler. After The Sox wound up signing Buehler to a one-year, $21.05 million deal — what would've been Pivetta's money and rotation spot — in late December. Pivetta remained a free agent until Pivetta has a career-best 2.94 ERA, which manager Alex Cora noted before the game is in part a product of a more pitcher-friendly ballpark. Buehler has a 5.40 ERA. This time, though, the roles were reversed. As Buehler cruised, Pivetta struggled, allowing 5 runs, 5 hits, and 3 walks in six innings. The Red Sox struck for four runs in the fourth inning. After loading the bases with no outs, they plated the first on Yoshida's sacrifice fly and another on Pivetta's errant pickoff throw. Advertisement With two outs, Wilyer Abreu blasted a two-run home run — a curveball hanging over the inner third of the plate — to right-center field. It was Abreu's team-leading 21st long ball of the year and first since July 20. The Sox added a run in the fifth, when back-to-back singles from Connor Wong and Roman Anthony gave them runners on the corners with no outs. Alex Bregman's soft groundout to third baseman Manny Machado brought in Wong. Tim Healey can be reached at
