LUCKNOW Uttar Pradesh will introduce an AI-based system to reduce road accidents and improve enforcement efficiency through big-data analytics following a formal no-objection from the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) in this regard. This is the first AI-driven road safety experiment ever undertaken by a state transport department in India, said transport commissioner Brajesh Narain Singh. (Pic for representation)
This is the first AI-driven road safety experiment ever undertaken by a state transport department in India, said transport commissioner Brajesh Narain Singh.
'The pilot project will be executed at zero cost by public sector enterprise ITI Limited in collaboration with global tech firm mLogica. MoRTH has clarified that the initiative must adhere to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, and all e-enforcement Standard Operating Procedures, while incurring no financial liability to the Centre,' he said.
The state has allocated ₹10 crore in its 2025–26 budget to support a broader 'data-driven administrative model' for the transport department, with this pilot laying the foundation.
The initial prototype of the model, scheduled for six weeks, will integrate data from multiple sources - accident records, weather feeds, vehicle telematics, driver profiles and roadway attributes - to build AI models that pinpoint root causes of accidents, forecast black spots and generate realtime policy dashboards.
If successful, the AI engine will be expanded across core departmental functions including faceless licensing, permit issuance, enforcement, revenue collection and the Vahan–Sarathi digital platforms, positioning UP as a national leader in transport-tech governance.
'This initiative will place UP at the forefront of data-driven governance. By integrating the AI model beyond road safety into every core function of the department, we aim to make our state a national trail-blazer in technological innovation,' said Singh.
The AI system will power predictive alerts for tax dues, document validity and traffic violations, helping officials act in real time. It will also drive fraud detection, vehicle mapping and auto-scoring of risks — ultimately bringing all transport data under a single digital view to sharpen enforcement, enhance transparency and improve public service delivery.
The ITI–mLogica team has been authorised to begin work immediately with the department's IT, enforcement and Road Safety wings. A final report will be submitted to MoRTH upon completion, with continuous audits on legal compliance, data privacy and cyber security.
'We expect the project to result in a measurable drop in road crashes, streamlined enforcement and faster, safer transport services for citizens,' the transport commissioner said.

Centre developing legislative framework for blue economy: Govt in Lok Sabha

The central government is taking a systematic approach towards a legislative framework for implementation of the Blue Economy policy, the ministry of earth sciences informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The draft national policy on blue economy was placed in the public domain in February 2021. (PTI photo) The draft national policy on blue economy, covering seven thematic areas including ocean governance and marine spatial planning, was placed in the public domain in February 2021 and revised in July 2022 after inter-ministerial and stakeholder consultations, the response said adding that the policy is aiming to harness ocean resources sustainably for economic growth while protecting marine ecosystems ensuring national security and it also provides the foundational basis for future legislation, the response said. The deep ocean mission is a subset of the broader blue economy concept which is focused on technological development for exploring deep ocean resources, promoting climate change advisory services, conservation of deep-sea biodiversity, research on ocean biology, and harnessing energy and freshwater from the ocean. Also Read:'Samudrayaan': India's first manned deep ocean mission to be launched by 2026 end 'The current focus is on strengthening the existing environmental legal framework through targeted reforms, including amendments to existing laws and empowering the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change's umbrella legislation the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. These reforms aim to introduce specific rules to address critical challenges such as e-waste (management), plastics waste management, batteries waste management, and end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) scrapping,' said Jitendra Singh, minister of state (MoS) for earth sciences. He was responding to questions by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP, Brijmohan Agrawal on three questions. Agrawal asked about the major legislative steps taken by the government for the Blue Economy district from policy-based approaches such as the Deep Ocean Mission along with the draft legislation; Secondly, he asked about the inter-ministerial consultations or projected timelines for a Blue Economy Law; and lastly, he asked about the existing mechanism which ensures sector-specific, legally binding environmental among others. Responding to the questions, Singh said that the various sectors in the blue economy are governed by different laws. Singh added that the regulatory gaps and overlaps are being addressed through the PARIVESH portal of Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change which acts as a single window for environmental, forest, wildlife, and coastal regulation zone clearances and the National Sagarmala Apex Committee and PM Gatishakti portal also aid in integrated planning. 'There are dedicated laws and guidelines for investment, accountability, and liability including 100% FDI is permitted via the automatic route in sectors like sea-ports and aquaculture. Offshore mineral block auctions are open to foreign bidders with specified conditions. The Merchant Shipping Act, 1958, adopts international liability conventions and mandates compulsory insurance for pollution damage. Offshore safety is governed by the Oil Mines Regulations, 2017, and a draft Offshore Safety Directive', the MoS said. 'The 'Harit Sagar' Green Port Guidelines (2023) mandate ESG reporting for terminal operators. The Deep Ocean Mission requires Environmental and Social Due Diligence for its projects. Maritime Zones Act, 1976 along with updated rules like the Offshore Wind Energy Lease Rules, 2023, provides the legal framework for leasing and regulating offshore energy and mineral projects,' the response said.

Project 18: India developing next-gen destroyer that can carry 144 missiles, including BrahMos, and track enemies 500 km away

Synopsis The Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau has introduced the P-18 next-generation destroyer concept, a significantly larger and more capable vessel than the Visakhapatnam-class destroyers. Displacing 13,000 tonnes, it features 144 vertical launch systems for diverse missiles, advanced radar systems for multi-domain operations, and a focus on indigenous content, enhancing India's naval power. AI generated image of the project -18 destroyer. The Indian Navy is reportedly working on the Project 18 (P-18) next-generation destroyer, which is expected to significantly surpass the size and capabilities of the existing Visakhapatnam-class destroyers. With an estimated displacement of approximately 13,000 tonnes, the new vessel would be the largest in the Indian fleet and may be classified as a cruiser under international conventions, which apply to warships exceeding 10,000 tonnes. Speaking in December 2023, Vice Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh, stated, 'The Indian Navy has started work on building the next generation of more advanced and capable destroyers, and plans for these vessels are already on the drawing board.' The Visakhapatnam-class destroyers, currently the Navy's largest, displace around 7,450 tonnes and are fitted with 48 vertical launch systems (VLS). In comparison, the P-18 under development includes 144 VLS cells that will support a range of missiles for various mission roles. The warship features four large active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars integrated into the superstructure. These are believed to be long-range multifunction radars developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The radar suite includes an S-band active array as the primary radar, a volume search radar, and a multi-sensor mast, providing 360-degree surveillance and tracking of aerial and surface threats. The systems, jointly developed by DRDO and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), reportedly have a range exceeding 500 km. — nikhilhatesyou (@nikhilhatesyou) The destroyer will carry a combination of missile systems across its 144 VLS cells: 32 cells at the stern are dedicated to the under-development PGLRSAM, a long-range surface-to-air missile with a range of 250 km, intended to intercept enemy aircraft and ballistic missile threats. 48 cells will house the BrahMos extended-range supersonic cruise missile and the Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile, both intended for anti-ship and land-attack missions. 64 cells are allocated for very short-range surface-to-air missiles, acting as the final defensive layer against aerial and anti-ship missile threats. At a press conference held ahead of Navy Day on 4 December 2023, Vice Admiral Singh stated, 'The broad timeframe is about five years from now. By then, we should be in a position to target the contract, and within five to 10 years, entire delivery.' The event was also attended by Navy Chief, Admiral R. Hari Kumar. The vessel is expected to feature a 75% of indigenous content under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. It will be capable of operating two multi-role helicopters, launching autonomous underwater drones, and carrying out anti-submarine warfare operations. As part of its long-term force development strategy, the Indian Navy is targeting a fleet size of 170 to 175 warships by 2035. The induction of the Project 18 destroyers is expected to contribute to this expansion, enhancing the Navy's capability in both defensive and offensive maritime operations.(Disclaimer: This article is based on social media post for informational purposes. has not independently verified the claims made in the post and does not vouch for their accuracy.
