Spotify's latest update gives users more control over their listening experience

TechCrunch07-05-2025
Spotify on Wednesday announced an update to its app designed to give users more control over their listening experience and recommendations. The refreshed experience introduces a handful of new features that will roll out gradually to Spotify users and Premium subscribers, including those to help you manage your Queue, your current listening experience, aid with playlist creation, and more.
The changes help to balance out an app that often leans heavily on algorithmic recommendations to suggest and play music by instead giving users the power to shape what's played, when, and how often.
For Premium users, Spotify's Queue has been revamped. The new design provides easier access to controls like Shuffle, Smart Shuffle, Repeat, and Sleep Timer, the company says. Smart Shuffle and Autoplay can also be switched fully off from Spotify's Settings, if preferred.
Plus, Premium subscribers will start seeing the tracks that Spotify is recommending to play after their queued-up tracks, so they can choose in advance what gets to stay in their Queue.
As you listen to music, you can tap a refreshed Hide button that's now more intuitively located, Spotify claims, when you come across a song you're not in the mood for within your playlist. The button will hide the track in the playlist across all devices. However, the company will soon introduce an even stronger version of the 'hide' with the launch of a new 30-day Snooze feature that will temporarily remove a track from your recommendations.
The company is also introducing features to improve the management of playlists on mobile. At the top of your playlists, you'll now find Add, Sort, and Edit buttons that allow you to add tracks, change the playlist's title or cover art, and organize the sequence of songs.
Listeners in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the U.K., and the U.S. will be able to use their Liked songs to create a playlist after first filtering it by genre, then tapping the new option to 'turn into a playlist.'

Other music curation tools have also been relocated. Now, users can tap the Create button at the bottom-right of the mobile app to access tools to create playlists, collaborate on playlists with friends, and join a Blend (a playlist that combines two people's musical tastes by featuring songs they'll both enjoy).
Premium subscribers, meanwhile, can tap the Create button to access the newer AI Playlist feature and Jam, a real-time listening session where multiple people can contribute to a shared Queue.
As a result of the changes, Spotify has relocated the Your Library tab to be the third option at the bottom of its mobile app.

Our writers' predictions for the 2025/26 season

It's that time of year again when our team of writers make their predictions for the upcoming campaign, a lit of viewpoints that more often than not look foolish in just a few month's time. Without further ado, here's our best attempt at looking into the Premier League's crystal ball. Our writers' predictions for the 2025/26 season Player of the Season Harry Diamond: Cole Palmer – This award usually goes to a title winner and (spoiler) I'm not backing Chelsea for the crown. But Palmer is a player that seems to be universally appreciated and provides enough highlight-reel moments to take the award. As the poster boy of a Chelsea team on the up, he could be the league's leading light. Ste McGovern: Bukayo Saka – The Arsenal star may not put up huge numbers in terms of goals and assists, but he is a sensational player and I expect him to raise his level again this year as the Gunners make that title push. Ayoob Rahman: Declan Rice – Now entering his third season at Arsenal, Declan Rice has become the heart of the team. After finishing as a runner-up again last year, expect him to be the league's standout player as he drives Arsenal's push to finally win the title. Mohon Chanda: Cole Palmer – Undoubtedly the best player in the current Chelsea squad and expecting an overall good show from him to carry Chelsea into the top four. Best transfer signing Harry: The obvious answer is Florian Wirtz, but at a British record fee perhaps that's expected. In terms of pound-for-pound value, I really like Evann Guessand to Aston Villa. The Ivorian will be a fun watch. Ste: Florian Wirtz – Liverpool's £100m man is a mesmerising playmaker and will light the Premier League up. Ayoob: Florian Wirtz – Following their stunning Premier League victory, Liverpool has strengthened its squad with the German international. Wirtz is poised to become the new creative engine for the defending champions, adding another layer of attack as Arne Slot aims to retain the title. Mohon: Florian Wirtz – Will become the heart of the Liverpool midfield and provide magical moments that a team sometimes need. Biggest transfer flop Harry: For all his potential, Burnley pinning their survival hopes – and £20m – on a player of Armando Broja's injury record screams disaster. Ste: Benjamin Sesko – The poor lad doesn't even realise that every big money Manchester United signing is doomed to failure. Ayoob: Benjamin Šeško – Manchester United's big summer signing comes with high expectations, but he may find the Premier League challenging. Adjusting to a new system and the intense pressure at United could see the prolific striker struggle to find his form. Mohon: Matheus Cunha – I'm still not so optimistic about Manchester United and if the team doesn't do well, a single player won't make much of a difference. Golden Boot winner Harry: Even in a 'disappointing' 2024/25 season, Erling Haaland still hit 34 goals in all competitions. He'll take some stopping. Ste: Erling Haaland – With Mo Salah headed to AFCON in the winter, the Man City striker's only competition is his own fitness. Ayoob: Erling Haaland – Erling Haaland remains the most reliable goalscorer in the league. He is the safest bet to win the Golden Boot once again. Mohon: Erling Haaland – He'll win the Golden Boot by scoring at least 30 again this season. Surprise package Harry: Everton – David Moyes is a wily old coach and has added an exciting cast of creatives to a team that has had one of the division's best defences in recent seasons. Depth is needed, but with nine Premier League teams in Europe this season, the Toffees can take some scalps with a reduced fixture list. Ste: Everton – The Toffees still need to fill out their squad a bit more, but I like their business so far and David Moyes can guide them to a potential top-half finish. Ayoob: Sunderland – Following their promotion last season, Sunderland aren't just here to survive. Ambitious signings like veteran leader Granit Xhaka show they mean business. Expect them to cause a few upsets and comfortably secure a mid-table finish. Mohon: Tottenham Hotspur – Might not be a surprise but I'm expecting them to improve and finish in the top six. Biggest fall from grace Harry: Brentford – Losing your long-serving head coach, captain, leading goalscorer and perhaps another 19-goal forward in the same summer is tough, particularly when you've appointed a new manager with no senior experience. Ste: Nottingham Forest – Their form fell off a cliff in the final few months of last season and they won't reach anything like the heights they did this time around. Brentford will be closer to the relegation zone than the top half, too. Ayoob: Aston Villa – After another strong season, Aston Villa now face the difficult task of balancing league football with the Europa League. The demands of playing on Thursdays and Sundays, combined with losing key players, could stretch their squad and lead to a slide down the table. Mohon: Brentford – They were brilliant last year but most of their players won't be able to redo what was done last year. One to watch Harry: Elliot Anderson – The Nottingham Forest midfielder will be in the England squad before the end of 2025. Ste: Estevao Willian – The young winger was sensational in his native Brazil, and impressed at the Club World Cup. Chelsea have a future star on their hands Ayoob: Viktor Gyökeres – All eyes will be on Arsenal's major summer signing, Viktor Gyökeres. Taking the iconic number 14 shirt, he is expected to provide the clinical finishing and power up front that the team has been missing. Mohon: Newcastle – I'm intrigued by the team and where's next should Alexander Isak leave. Champions Harry: Liverpool – It will be closer, but Liverpool look the strongest of the competing sides. Ste: Arsenal – If they don't do it this year, they are never going to do it. Ayoob: Arsenal – After three consecutive seasons as runners-up to Manchester City and Liverpool, this finally looks to be their year. The arrival of a proven goalscorer in Gyökeres gives them the firepower needed to overcome the champions and win the title. Mohon: Liverpool – I believe they will continue their form and beat Manchester City to win the title again. Top Four Harry: Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea Ste: Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea. Ayoob: Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City. Mohon: Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea. Bottom Three Harry: Sunderland, Brentford, Burnley Ste: Wolves, Sunderland, Burnley. Ayoob: Burnley, West Ham United, Brentford. Mohon: Burnley, Leeds, Wolves. First manager sacked Harry: Scott Parker – The gap between the top two divisions is huge and Burnley will find that out. Ste: Scott Parker – I can't see Burnley being anything other than the worst team in the Premier League and they will hit the eject button before long. Ayoob: Graham Potter - He starts the season under immediate pressure to perform. If his team doesn't get positive results early on, he could be the first manager to be dismissed. Mohon: Vitor Pereira. Champions League winner Harry: PSG were so good last season and have a team that's likely to improve as a collective. Their nearest challengers? I think Arsenal have a better shot in Europe than in the Premier League. A brilliant defence, set-piece threat and, now, with the addition of Gyokeres a goalscorer. Ste: PSG – Anything can happen in knockout football, but it feels like their dynastic dominance in Europe has just begun. Ayoob: Bayern Munich - Their squad is packed with top-tier talent and European experience. They have all the tools necessary to go all the way in the Champions League this season. Mohon: Barcelona. Philips Hue accidentally reveals major product lineup ahead of launch

TL;DR Philips Hue briefly put up a page revealing a range of new smart lighting products on its website before taking the page down. The Festavia line is getting expanded with the addition of two new models: Festavia permanent lights and Festavia globe string lights. The company is also releasing a gradient stip light and a light bulb that uses 40% less power. Mistakes happen, and sometimes those errors lead to leaks of products we can look forward to. It looks like that's exactly what happened to smart light maker Philips Hue. We now know that the company plans to launch several new products. Don't want to miss the best from Android Authority? Set us as a preferred source in Google Search to support us and make sure you never miss our latest exclusive reports, expert analysis, and much more. Over on the Philips Hue website, the company recently published a page full of new products coming soon. This was apparently done by mistake, as the page was only up for a brief time before being taken down. However, it was up just long enough for Hueblog to grab the details. Said page revealed that Philips Hue will expand the Festavia line with two new entries. One of the new products is a permanently installed string of lights designed for the exterior of the home. The other is a string of globe lights that are also for outdoors. According to Philips Hue, these 'lightguide bulbs features a distinctive inner tube that perfectly balances color and brightness.' You'll be able to customize the lights 'with a gradient of multiple colors, light scenes, or special effects.' In addition to the Festavia lights, there's also a new indoor/outdoor gradient light strip. These gradient strip lights are said to use ChromaSync technology, as well as ultra-bright, true white light, to do precise color matching. Last but not least, the company is launching a new light bulb called the A19. What makes this light bulb special is that it uses 40% less power and is capable of ultra-low dimming, down to 0.2% of the bulb's total brightness. Like the gradient light strip, this bulb is also equipped with ChromaSync technology. The page says that the price of the A19 will be $54.99. However, it's unknown how much you have to pay to add these other products to your smart home. Follow

Russia's Shahed-136 Drones Are Laying Anti-Tank Mines

Russia is now apparently using the Shahed-family drones to lay anti-tank mines, echoing a tactic used by Ukrainian multi-rotor 'bomber' drones, though with very different advantages. Though it's unclear how widely this new use for the Shahed is being employed, it represents yet another challenge to Ukraine from a drone that has terrorized the country for years now. A new video emerged on social media showing at least one of the delta-winged uncrewed aircraft dropping PTM-3 anti-tank mines from canisters attached underneath the Shahed's blended flying-wing-like fuselage. Each canister contains one mine, released by a small explosive charge, which is visible in the video. At least two Ukrainian vehicles appear to have struck the mines. Russian drones dropping anti-tank mines on roads. — Clash Report (@clashreport) August 10, 2025 'Today on our channel is the premiere of the latest drone tactics against ground-moving targets,' wrote the Russian NGP-Razvedka military Telegram channel, which posted the video on Sunday. 'Some time ago, the enemy posted anxious messages claiming that under the wing of the Geranium [the Russian name for Shaheds] were found cassettes with mines, suspended with unknown purposes. The malicious NgP soldiers were testing some technologies, but silently.' 'The Geranium conducts remote mining of enemy supply routes in real time, resulting in one transport unit going down, while another with shredded infantry manages to escape, though not very far in such a state,' NGP-Razvedka claimed in an explanation of what is seen in the video. 'The guidance system will be refined, the tactics of use expanded, and the logistics of the Nazis will be turned into a complete nightmare. The range of the Geranium is over 1,000 km (621 miles), do you get what that means?' The use of Shaheds to drop mines was first revealed last week by the National Police of Ukraine (NPU) after one of the drones was shot down in the Sumy region. 'This method allows the enemy to remotely mine roads, agricultural lands, and more,' NPU explained on its Telegram channel. 'The PTM-3 mine, small in size, in a plastic casing, has a magnetic detonator and reacts to machinery that is nearby or passing by.' The NPU post included four images of the system recovered from the recovered Shahed, which you can see below. The police urged 'citizens to be vigilant and careful! This especially applies to drivers of any machinery working in the fields, as well as those moving along field roads where visibility of the road surface is limited due to grass vegetation.' NPU also warned anyone finding one of these mines to contact authorities immediately. 'This also applies to enemy UAVs detected that did not explode upon falling,' NPU added. 'In addition to a powerful warhead, they may also contain mine traps or sensors that can trigger an explosion if tampered with.' The PTM-3 is a Soviet-era scatterable anti-tank mine that can be deployed either by hand, vehicle, artillery, or helicopter, according to the U.S. Army. The mine's case 'is configured to produce a shaped charge effect on five sides,' the Army noted. 'Once deployed, the mine arms itself after 60 seconds. The mine uses a magnetic influence fuze that detonates the mine when a vehicle passes over it. It is also reported to have an anti-handling device that is sensitive to movement.' Using Shaheds to drop mines is the latest development of the Iranian-designed weapon that first appeared on the battlefield for Russia in September 2022. They have been frequently improved on since and have become by far Russia's main standoff weapons, used to cause widespread damage across Ukraine. In addition to adding new capabilities like jet engines and new tactics for evading Ukrainian air defenses, Russia is drastically increasing the number of the drones it is producing. As we have previously noted, while Russia initially relied on Iran to supply its Shaheds, it now produces its own at the rate of 2,000 per month with plans to nearly triple that in the not-too-distant future. It is by far the primary method by which Russia launches long-range strikes into Ukraine. Another major concern is the infusion of AI into the Shahed-136 airframe, which is already underway. This will have massive repercussions, which we discussed in great detail a year and a half ago in this previous feature. Not only do we not know how frequently Russia is using Shaheds to drop mines, it is also unclear how many of the systems they have and if the concept is still in a highly experimental state. It is possible that these operate near the front lines, with a human in the loop controlling them. Standard Shahed-136s operate autonomously on autopilot and fly to a fixed target area before diving toward it and detonating. By using man-in-the-loop control, it would provide more agile use of the drones for mining roadways near the front and higher sortie rates. The need for two-way communications to control the drone would be the big limiting factor when it comes to its range and, to some extent, its survivability. On the other hand, the Shahed could be following a planned route on autopilot, dropping the mines as programmed. This would be a very concerning development as the drones could mine roadways hundreds of miles deep into Ukraine, where no mines would be expected. Again, we discussed the worry that Shaheds will become a far more dynamic threat deep in Ukraine in our past piece linked here. With this in mind, the video we are seeing could be early combat trials footage from man-in-the-loop nearby mining operations. If not, it would require an autopiloted Shahed to return to friendly territory for the video to be physically recovered from the drone or it would have to uploaded opportunistically via cellular networks while deep over Ukraine. We just don't know the current or planned concept of operations for these mining-optimized Shaheds at this time. Meanwhile, Shaheds aren't the only drones Russia is using to deliver PTM-3s. Moscow is now starting to use the mines as warheads for its Lancet line of loitering munitions, according to the Ukrainian Militarnyi media outlet. However, instead of being dropped by Lancets, they are getting installed as the drone's primary kinetic device. With a total weight of 4.9 kg, the PTM-3s pack a stronger punch than the standard KZ-6 warhead, Militarnyi noted. The site offered no information about how widely the PTM-3s are being used in this manner. Moscow is far behind in using bomber drones to drop mines in this manner, one drone expert claims. 'Using a Geran-2 (Shahed) long-range strike UAV to drop just two PTM-3 anti-tank landmines on frontline roads reflects the pathetic failure of Russia to develop a heavy-lift drone fleet,' an open-source expert using the Grandpa Roy X account stated on the social media platform. 'Ukraine has used its large heavy drone fleet to precision place many thousands of PTM-3s.' Using a Geran-2 (Shahed) long-range strike UAV to drop just two PTM-3 anti-tank landmines on frontline roads reflects the pathetic failure of Russia to develop a heavy lift drone has used its large heavy drone fleet to precision place many thousands of PTM-3s.1/ — Roy (@GrandpaRoy2) August 11, 2025 With the increasing numbers of Shaheds being produced and plentiful PTM-3s, widespread use of these weapons would pose additional danger to a Ukrainian logistics system already under tremendous pressure from Moscow's ubiquitous attack drones. If the drones are able to scatter these mines virtually anywhere in Ukraine, taking advantage of their long-range, than that could prove to be a terrible problem for Ukrainian military personnel and civilians alike.
