Spotify forecasts third-quarter profit below estimates on higher taxes

CNA29-07-2025
Spotify forecast third-quarter profit below Wall Street estimates on Tuesday as higher taxes related to employee salaries outweigh upbeat demand for its premium music-streaming plans, sending its shares down 5 per cent in premarket trading.
Investors are closely watching the Swedish company's profitability after price hikes, cost cuts and subscriber gains in recent years helped it achieve its first annual profit in 2024.
Spotify said it expects operating income of 485 million euros ($561.05 million) in the current quarter, below an estimate of 562 million euros, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Its third-quarter monthly active users (MAU) forecast of 710 million was in line with estimates, while its prediction for a 5 million increase in premium subscribers to 281 million was above a Visible Alpha estimate of 279 million.
Its board has approved a $1 billion increase to its share repurchase program, raising the total authorization to $2 billion, with $1.9 billion available for buybacks through April 2026.
Tough competition in music streaming and podcasts from rivals from Apple and Amazon has also prompted Spotify to increase marketing, which contributed to an 8 per cent increase in operating expenses in the April-to-June quarter.
Premium subscribers rose 12 per cent to 276 million in the second quarter, compared with a Visible Alpha estimate of 273 million. Its MAU net additions of 18 million brought the total to 696 million, exceeding expectations.
Second-quarter revenue rose 10 per cent to 4.19 billion euros ($4.85 billion), but fell short of an estimate of 4.26 billion euros. Spotify said unfavorable currency movements reduced year-over-year total revenue growth by about 440 basis points in the reported quarter.
It forecast third-quarter revenue of 4.2 billion euros, below the estimate of 4.48 billion euros.

US stocks rise as Apple surges

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Traders working on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, in New York City, on Aug 6. NEW YORK - Wall Street stocks rose on Aug 6 with Apple and most other large tech companies rallying as markets largely shrugged off US President Donald Trump's latest tariff hikes. Apple piled on more than 5 per cent after White House officials said the tech giant plans an additional US$100 billion (S$129 billion) in capital spending in the United States. Amazon and Google parent Alphabet were among the other large tech names that also rose. 'By standing up and publicly announcing a domestic investment with President Trump, it reduces the likelihood of Trump imposing new tariff burdens on Apple,' said FHN Financial's Chris Low. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished up 0.2 per cent at 44,193.12. The broad-based S&P 500 gained 0.7 per cent to 6,345.06, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 1.2 per cent to 21,169.42, less than 10 points from an all-time record. Mr Trump ordered an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods. The levy, which is expected to come into force in three weeks, is due to New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil. A new wave of Trump tariffs is due to take effect on Aug 7 on dozens of other economies. But the Aug 6 gains suggest investors are becoming more inured to the levies. 'This is a market that's fuelled by enthusiasm,' said Mr Jack Ablin, of Cresset Capital Management. 'Nothing has blown up yet. Perhaps the impact of tariffs won't be as great as investors originally feared.' Among individual companies, Disney fell 2.7 per cent as it reported around a doubling of profits to US$5.3 billion and announced a series of new deals to boost its upcoming ESPN streaming venture. But McDonald's jumped 3 per cent as it reported an 11 per cent rise in profits to US$2.3 billion. While the fast food giant returned to sales growth at US stores, it warned that low-income consumers were cutting back amid financial pressures. AFP

Paycom raises 2025 revenue and profit forecasts on AI-driven demand

Payroll processor Paycom Software raised its forecast for annual revenue and profit on Wednesday, as the addition of AI features helps accelerate demand for its employee management services, sending its shares up 7 per cent in extended trading. The company now expects fiscal 2025 revenue of $2.05 billion to $2.06 billion, up from its previous projection of $2.02 billion to $2.04 billion. Analysts on average expect $2.03 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Paycom has been integrating artificial intelligence features into its software with its 'smart AI' suite that automates tasks such as writing job descriptions and helps employers identify which employees are most at risk of leaving. This has boosted demand for Paycom's services as businesses look to simplify workforce management functions. "We are well positioned to extend our product lead and eclipse the industry with even greater AI and automation," CEO Chad Richison said in a statement. Paycom expects 2025 core profit in the range of $872 million to $882 million, up from previous expectations of $843 million to $858 million. The payroll processor reported revenue of $483.6 million for the second quarter ended June 30, beating analysts' estimate of $472 million. Adjusted core profit was $198.3 million, compared to $159.7 million in the same period last year. Paycom's expectation of strong growth comes despite a sharp deterioration in U.S. labor market conditions.
