All iPhone users issued with an urgent price alert, and ignoring it could be costly
It's almost September, and that means one thing in the yearly tech calendar: it's almost time for a new iPhone. Apple almost always launches shiny upgrades in the autumn, and we don't expect 2025 to be any different. In fact, the US technology giant may hold a major launch event as early as September 9th, where the latest iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models will get their first unveiling. Some rumours also suggest that super-skinny iPhone 17 Air might also be shown to the world, with this gadget offering fans a device that's far easier to handle.
Full details about a launch could be confirmed soon and that means owners of current devices such as the iPhone 14, 15 and 16 might want to act fast.
It's no secret that older call makers tend to drop in value once something new goes on sale, and it's thought that this same trend will happen again this year.
One trade-in site reckons current models could fall by as much as £300, which is clearly a huge amount of money to lose.
"The iPhone resale market stays the same year after year, yet most people still wait until after the new models are announced to sell their old phones," Sam Wilson, Director at Gadget GoGo said.
"By then, it's too late, and the market becomes saturated with old models and values drop."
The worst affected could be older Pro models with these more premium gadgets facing the biggest fall.
"Pro and Pro Max versions can lose £150-300 in value within the first month after a new launch. That's a lot of money they could have pocketed by acting just a few weeks earlier," Wilson added.
"iPhones generally retain their value better than other brands, which makes the timing of selling even more important. You're starting from a higher resale value, so the actual amount you lose by waiting can be huge."
It's worth remembering that Apple does offer its own trade-in options but, if you are thinking of upgrading to the iPhone 17, it could be worth seeing what your device is worth now if you want the very best price for what you already own.
The only thing to be aware of is that Apple probably won't start stocking the iPhone 17 in stores until much later next month, so make sure you have an old device you can use as a stopgap before trading in.
What will be new on the iPhone 17?
Apple won't reveal anything until its famous keynote kicks off in Cupertino, California. However, rumours are rife that the new devices will get a refreshed look, faster processor, better cameras and longer battery life.
Updated colours could be added along with the inclusion of the iPhone 17 Air , which will be far slimmer than anything the firm has launched before.

Students can get free AirPods for a limited time with this deal
If you're one of the thousands of young people to have received a place at university last week, you're likely embarking on the last-minute scramble to sort your accommodation, travel and equipment for the year ahead. Perhaps you're a returning student, and you've been working a summer job to upgrade a lousy laptop that decided to crash five minutes before your assignment is due. No matter what your reason is for wanting to upgrade your back-to-school tech, I've spied an incredible laptop deal. University students, parents and anyone working in education can get a free pair of AirPods 4 with the purchase of an iPad, MacBook or iMac. Of course, a brand new iPad, MacBook or Mac is a significant purchase, and as The Independent 's consumer writer, my main priority is to save you money. If you weren't planning on buying a brand new Mac, iPad, MacBook or iMac, it's not a financially responsible choice to drop hundreds of pounds just because Apple are throwing a pair of AirPods. Even with this deal, you'll be spending far more than you would if you bought a non-Apple tablet or laptop, and opted for a less expensive pair of our best wireless earbuds. If you're an Apple fan, you could also save hundreds by getting refurbished models from a reputable site like BackMarket. However, if you're set on a new iPad, Mac or MacBook, now's a good time to go for it. While third parties often beat Apple on price, through its Education Store, you can currently get up to 11 per cent off, plus a free pair of AirPods 4 to listen to your study playlist. Running until Tuesday 21 October, this deal is only available for a limited time. Here's what you need to know. Who can buy the student AirPods deal? We're calling it a student deal, but really, it's available to more people than that. Here's who can get it: New and returning university students Parents of new and returning university students Teachers and other employees of any educational institution, which includes not just universities but also schools and colleges You'll need to go to the Education Store and sign up using Unidays. Parents will need to get their child to verify through Unidays before completing a purchase. Education workers can create a Unidays staff account. Upgrade to the AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation As part of this deal, you can choose to upgrade to the AirPods Pro 2, usually sold for £229, for an additional £50. For example, if you get a MacBook Air on the Education Store for £899, and you choose the AirPods Pro, you'll pay £949. Similarly, if minimising background noise is important to you, there's an option to upgrade to the AirPods 4, usually sold for £129, with active noise cancellation. This will cost an extra £50, unless you're getting an iMac in which case no extra charge will be added. Other accessories included in this deal AirPods aren't the only accessories included in this deal. If you wanted to, you could get an Apple keyboard, mouse, trackpad or Apple pencil pro as part of some of the bundle offers. You'll be asked which accessory you want to choose before you check out – just make sure you check the total at the end so you don't end up paying an extra fee by accident. Get a free pair of AirPods 4 with these Apple deals We've listed the products you can get a free pair of AirPods with below. Each model has different options available for storage, size and colour, but we've listed the lowest price you can get each one from under the deal. You can get an iPad Air, with a pair of AirPods 4 included, on Apple's Education store. This isn't the cheapest price we've seen for this model, as you can nab it for £417.89 on On Buy, but with the AirPods 4 included, Apple comes out on top here. The iPad Pro, which tech critic David Phelan called 'monsterously powerful and impossibly thin', is 11 per cent off on Apple's education store. Again, this price is beaten by On Buy, which is selling it for £747, but you won't get the AirPods 4 included. This tech icon is on sale for 11 per cent off on Apple's Education Store with AirPods 4 thrown in. Not bothered about the AirPods? You can get it without from Amazon for £849. You can save £100 on the latest MacBook Pro, and get a pair of AirPods thrown in when you buy it via Apple's Education store. At the time of writing, this is the lowest price for a new MacBook Pro from a reputable retailer. Though a £50 discount might not seem like much for a product this costly, this is the best price we've seen for an iMac at the moment – and that's without factoring in the AirPods 4, which you'll get bundled in.

UK drops demand for 'back door' access to Apple users' data
The Government has retreated on its controversial demand for a 'back door' to Apple users' data following a row with Donald Trump. Tulsi Gabbard, the US director of national intelligence, said Britain had dropped a request for the American tech giant to enable access to 'protected encrypted data'. She posted on X/ Twitter that she had ensured American's 'private data remains private' following work with the US President and his vice-president JD Vance . Earlier this year, the Government was revealed to have demanded access to encrypted data stored by Apple users worldwide in its cloud service. In a notice issued under the Investigatory Powers Act 2016, the Home Office was said to have sought data protected by Apple's advanced data protection (ADP) tool. This is an opt-in tool within Apple's iCloud service which only an account holder can access, and is currently out of the reach of even Apple. The iPhone-maker subsequently said it was withdrawing the tool from the UK and brought legal action against the Home Office. Mr Trump compared the UK's demand to Chinese surveillance and said he had told Sir Keir Starmer he 'can't do this' after meeting with the Prime Minister in February. In her social media post, Ms Gabbard wrote: 'Over the past few months, I've been working closely with our partners in the UK... to ensure Americans' private data remains private and our Constitutional rights and civil liberties are protected. 'As a result, the UK has agreed to drop its mandate for Apple to provide a 'back door' that would have enabled access to the protected encrypted data of American citizens and encroached on our civil liberties.' Senior Tory MP Sir David Davis, a former Cabinet minister, welcomed the Government's decision to drop its demand for access to Apple users' encrypted data. 'Such a backdoor would only serve to weaken the protection given by encryption to all of us from malicious actors,' he said. The Government's approach was widely criticized by online privacy campaigners and experts when reports of the request first appeared. But police and security services around the world have long warned of the dangers of end-to-end encrypted services. It is argued they allow offenders such as terrorists and child abusers to hide more easily. A UK Government spokesperson said: 'We do not comment on operational matters, including confirming or denying the existence of such notices. 'We have long had joint security and intelligence arrangements with the US to tackle the most serious threats such as terrorism and child sexual abuse, including the role played by fast-moving technology in enabling those threats.' They added the agreements have 'long contained' safeguards to protect privacy and sovereignty, including for UK and US citizens.
