Annual Boots and Badges softball game, blood drive aims to raise money for community
The Crystal Coast Boots and Badges is a nonprofit group of local Carteret County first responders.
Saturday, they will be taking part in a tradition of having firefighters take on police officers in the charity game.
Founder of the organization, Kristen Davis, said she started the charity game to assist a local deputy who was battling a brain tumor.
Many games later, the money still goes toward helping people with medical issues.
'We were able to assist them financially during his recovery and trips back and forth to Chapel Hill and because it was so successful, we continued to do it every year. This will be year 15 actually,' Davis said. 'It's just the spirit of this county is when somebody, anybody is in need, everybody just kind of bands together and these games are just a small glimpse of that community spirit in Carteret County.'
For first responders, it's friendly competition but also a way to come together as one community. 'A lot of the times that we have the recipients, that they've been first responders within the community, people that you know, and you get to help them out yourself,' School Resource Officer in Morehead City Charlie Millea said. 'So, being on the board, I get to volunteer and go out and speak to the businesses and make the logos and things like that to actually help this come together and get some money for these people in their the times of need.'
The competition isn't confined to the field as police officers and firefighters will also take part in the Battle of the Badges Blood Drive.
The blood drive will be May 8th to see which department can donate the most. 'For every donor that comes in will get to vote, you know, red for fire, blue for police,' Kristin Willis with the American Red Cross said. 'And then yes, we will do a winner and the winner gets to take home the trophy.'
First pitch of the game Saturday is at 3 p.m. at Big Rock Stadium. Tickets are $10 apiece. There will also be T-shirts available and raffle prizes to raise money for the cause.

Broncos Two-Time Super Bowl Legend Has Bold Prediction for Team
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Plenty of people are bullish on the Denver Broncos right now. After all, Denver went 10-7 after losing its first two games last season and surprised many by making the NFL playoffs for the first time in nine years. Quarterback Bo Nix, who was a rookie last year, led the charge. He overcame a shaky September to post 3,775 passing yards and 29 passing touchdowns while completing 66.3% of his pass attempts. Nix's fine play down the stretch, along with a few notable offseason additions, has led to some rosy predictions for the Broncos this coming season. But Terrell Davis, the legendary running back who once won back-to-back Super Bowl championships with them, made an audacious statement about the expectations for his former team. He told KMGH-TV in Denver that his former squad should be aiming for the sky. "It reminds me of '95," Davis said. "We were 8-8 in 1995, and then in 1996, we end up winning 13 games. And so it was the same thing. No one was talking about a Super Bowl -- at least outside our locker room -- when we were 8-8. We knew it, and we were talking about it after we went 8-8, not because of the record, but because we knew. ... Our confidence level was through the roof. I think this Brocnos team has the same confidence and mentality right now. "Anything short of a Super Bowl would be a disappointment for them." He joined a select club when he ran for over 2,000 yards in 1998, and his ascent coincided with that of the John Elway-led Broncos during the second half of the 1990s. This current iteration of the Broncos doesn't exactly have a prolific tailback such as Davis, but Davis spoke highly of J.K. Dobbins, who is the team's presumed starter at the position. Dobbins had a career-high 905 rushing yards last year while recording nine rushing touchdowns with the Los Angeles Chargers last year. Courtland Sutton has become a sneaky good wide receiver, and he's coming off a season in which he tallied 1,081 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Meanwhile, fellow WR Marvin Mims Jr., who is entering his third season, seems to be ascending. Bet $5 on Courtland Sutton and the Broncos for a $200 bonus, or place a $1,000 Safety Net bet on the Saints after utilizing the bet365 bonus code WEEK365. All three have injury concerns surrounding them, but they also have the ability to elevate the squad. Defense was Denver's calling card last year, as it finished third in points allowed. Combine that with Nix's production and the fact that he could be the QB1 coach Sean Payton has been looking for, and it is understandable why people throughout Colorado are stoked about the Broncos. WR Gabe Davis discusses what went wrong in his one season with the Jaguars
Former Jaguars' WR Gabe Davis explained recently what went wrong in his one season with the team. In an offseason that was full of change for the Jacksonville Jaguars' one of the biggest moves made by GM James Gladstone was releasing wide receiver Gabe Davis. Davis signed a three-year, $39 million deal, which included $24 million guaranteed during the 2024 offseason. By releasing Davis, the Jaguars take on a dead cap hit of $20.3 million. By designating Davis as a post-June 1st release, the Jaguars will take on a dead cap hit of $5.7 million in 2025 and $14.6 million in 2026. On a recent appearance on 'Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast,' Davis discussed his stint with the Jaguars and what went wrong. "I had torn my PCL meniscus. I had torn it the 17th game in 2023 in Buffalo. And then signed with Jacksonville and [explicit] never got back right," Davis said, via Jaguars on SI. Davis' 2024 season with the Jaguars ended due to injury after just 10 games. A big play threat with Buffalo, Davis averaged just 12.0 yards per catch in Jacksonville, catching 20-of-42 passes for 239 yards. "So I was just running like Week 10 and just took a cut and then felt a pop in my knee and went to go try to walk to the sideline," Davis said. Davis is still an unsigned free agent.
