Welcome to ET Market Watch, your quick fix on the day's biggest market movers. I am Neha Vashisht Mahajan - your host of the evening.
It's Friday, June 13.
Today was a turbulent day for investors, both emotionally and financially.
Let's start with the numbers.
The Sensex fell 573 points to close at 81,118, while the Nifty50 ended 169 points lower, settling at 24,718.
Earlier in the day, markets were in freefall — with the Sensex down over 1,300 points and Nifty hitting an intraday low of 24,473.
So, what triggered the sell-off?
Reason #1: Israel strikes Iran
In a dramatic escalation of Middle East tensions, Israel launched a preemptive military strike on Iran's capital, Tehran.
The airstrikes reportedly targeted nuclear sites, missile factories, and top Iranian commanders, including Revolutionary Guards chief Hossein Salami, whose death has been confirmed by Iranian state media.
A state of emergency has been declared in Israel, and markets fear retaliatory attacks.
Washington has distanced itself from the strike, calling it a 'unilateral action.'
This geopolitical flashpoint shook global markets — and India wasn't spared.
Reason #2: Crude oil prices spiked
Brent crude surged over 6.6% to $74.15, after hitting $78.50 — the highest since January.
WTI crude wasn't far behind, rising 7.3% to $72.91.
Markets are worried that if Iran retaliates by blocking the Strait of Hormuz, oil supply could be severely restricted.
And we've seen this story before — back in 2022, similar fears sent energy prices soaring.
Reason #3: Global sell-off
The ripple effect extended beyond oil.
Asian markets tumbled — Japan's Nikkei, South Korea's KOSPI, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng all lost over 1%.
In Europe, the DAX, CAC 40, and Euro Stoxx followed suit.
The mood? Risk-off.
Safe-haven rally
As panic set in, investors fled to safety.
Gold shot up to $3,416 per ounce, approaching its all-time high.
The Swiss franc and Japanese yen gained.
US 10-year Treasury yields dropped to a one-month low of 4.31%.
And the Dollar Index climbed 0.5% — classic flight-to-safety.
Closing Thought:
The BSE's market capitalisation dropped by ₹2.17 lakh crore, wiping out a chunk of investor wealth in just a few hours.
It's a reminder that in today's connected world, geopolitics and markets move hand in hand.
That's all for today on ET Market Watch. We'll keep watching the numbers — and the world behind them.

Japan urges US to drop auto tariffs as trade talks progress ahead of G7 Summit

Japan and the US held another round of trade talks in Washington as officials try to reach an agreement ahead of a Group of Seven summit in Canada and a meeting between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Japan's top trade negotiator Ryosei Akazawa met with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick for 70 minutes and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent for 45 minutes on Friday. The talks took place a few hours after Ishiba said Japan is continuing to ask the US to withdraw the tariffs following a call with the US president. 'To achieve an agreement that is mutually beneficial, we engaged in very in-depth discussions with the two ministers and explored the possibility of reaching an agreement,' Akazawa told reporters after the sixth round of trade negotiations. 'We further deepened discussions on issues such as expanding bilateral trade, non-tariff measures and cooperation on economic security.' Akazawa declined to say if a path toward a deal is in sight or comment on whether Ishiba and Trump may announce a deal on the sidelines of the G-7 gathering in Canada starting Sunday. Akazawa said he may join the premier in Canada. Following the earlier call with Trump, Ishiba said both sides had agreed to accelerate talks toward reaching a mutually beneficial deal and to meet in Canada. Japan is seeking a written agreement from the US, saying that the Asian country will be exempt from additional tariff hikes on certain sectors like autos, the Mainichi newspaper reported late Friday. Japan is among the world's major exporters most at risk from Trump's wave of trade tariffs as its economy teeters on the brink of a technical recession ahead of a national election. The US administration has imposed a 25% tariff on imported cars and auto parts and a 50% levy on steel and aluminum. A 10% across-the-board duty on other goods from Japan will rise to 24% on July 9 barring a deal. The auto-related tariff is likely to hit Japan's economy hardest given that cars and auto parts make up a third of the nation's exports to the US and the industry is one of its biggest employers. Earlier this week, Trump floated the idea of raising auto tariffs even more, a move that would further ramp up the pressure on Japan's top automakers and a widespread ecosystem of suppliers and related businesses. Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co. and other Japanese car manufacturers are already bracing for a collective profit hit of more than $19 billion this fiscal year alone from the existing levy. Akazawa said Japan is trying to avoid the auto tariffs going even higher via its bilateral talks with the US. He didn't reveal any further specifics of the latest negotiations and said Japan is continuing to aim for a single package of trade agreements. Akazawa said he already briefed Ishiba on the latest negotiations while declining to comment on what specifically he told the prime minister. In a separate development linked to another potential talking point between the two leaders, Trump formally opened the door to approving Nippon Steel Corp.'s purchase of United States Steel Corp. The Trump administration submitted a proposed national security agreement to the companies on Friday that clears the sale so long as the companies comply with the government's terms. 'The Japanese government believes that this investment will strengthen the ability of the Japanese and US steel industries to generate new innovation and lead to the strengthening of the close partnership between Japan and the US,' Trade and Industry Minister Yoji Muto said following the announcement from the White House. Progress toward accepting the deal is potentially a positive sign of how Trump will welcome Japanese efforts to invest in production in the US that secures or creates jobs for Americans. Japan has highlighted its track record as the leading overseas investor in the US as it seeks to reach a deal with the Trump administration. As for the timing of a US-Japan trade deal, Bessent didn't bring up the possibility of a deadline extension in the latest round of talks, Akazawa said. The Treasury chief hinted this week that the July 9 deadline for imposing suspended across-the-board reciprocal tariffs could be extended for those countries negotiating on trade in good faith. Akazawa deflected a question over whether Ishiba and Trump will announce a deal at the G-7. 'Negotiations can sometimes reach an agreement suddenly, or they can unexpectedly drag on for a long time,' Akazawa said. 'It's like being caught in fog. Sometimes the fog suddenly lifts in the morning. Sometimes it never seems to clear up no matter how much time passes. For that reason, I would prefer to refrain from making any premature statements.'

‘Is your brain fried?': HR lashes out at sick employee over one-hour leave request

A human resources supervisor at a livestream e-commerce firm in southeastern China has been dismissed and is facing an official inquiry after she verbally harassed a female employee who requested a short sick leave, reported the South China Morning Post. The controversy came to public attention on June 5, after the employee, whose name has not been made public, took to social media to share her experience. She said she had asked for just an hour off due to a 37.9°C fever but was instead met with a barrage of insults from her HR supervisor. The company, Vision Entertainment, is a multichannel network provider based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, according to the media outlet. Founded in 2018, it works primarily in the live-streaming e-commerce industry. Screenshots of their chat circulated online, revealing Huang's harsh tone. 'You're too weak. My goodness, can't even handle 38 degrees?' Huang wrote. She further added, 'Is your brain fried from the fever today, or is your menstrual period blocked and not arriving, so you can't think before you speak?' Despite staying on the job and coordinating with her team manager to ensure work continuity, the employee continued to receive messages from Huang. 'You took leave but didn't go; you just stayed there without working properly. Your actions and words don't match – you should see a psychiatrist,' Huang said in another message. Following the exchange, the employee's work account was deactivated, and she was told her performance-based salary would be withheld. The Human Resources and Social Security Bureau in Hangzhou's Xiaoshan District launched an investigation into the matter. Speaking to Jimu News, a bureau representative said, 'The company initially described the situation as a 'personal dispute' between two employees. It later confirmed that the employee would not face any disciplinary action or financial penalties regarding the performance-based salary.' According to Tianyancha, a business information platform, Vision Entertainment has officially terminated Huang for violating internal regulations. The incident has drawn sharp criticism on Chinese social media platforms, where many users voiced concern about the treatment of workers in the entertainment and e-commerce industries. 'How ridiculous! Many entertainment companies treat employees this way. I have decided I will never work in this industry again,' one person wrote. Another user commented, 'As a human being, you should at least have sympathy and empathy. I urge the entire internet to block this HR supervisor. With such character and conduct, you'll only bring harm wherever you go.' Also read: 'I plan to do it until…': Why 'Mr Cash Drop' is hiding money across New Jersey? Chinese labour laws grant employees the right to take sick leave and protect them from being unfairly penalised during recovery, a principle that many online are now urging authorities and companies to enforce more strictly.
