Chetan Hansraj Recalls Gruelling TV Days: ‘I Worked 22 Hours Non-Stop, Took Nap On Sets'

News18a day ago
Chetan Hansraj recalls working 22-hour days for three years in early 2000s TV, calling it a transformative experience.
At the height of Indian television's early 2000s boom, when Ekta Kapoor's productions dominated prime time, actors and crews often worked at an unforgiving pace to keep up with the industry's soaring output. Actor Chetan Hansraj, a familiar face in several Balaji Telefilms dramas of that era, has recalled just how demanding the schedule was and why he still considers it one of the best periods of his life.
Speaking to Siddharth Kannan on his YouTube channel, Hansraj revealed that during the early years of his television career, he was juggling three shows at the same time – Kkusum, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, and Kya Hadsaa Kya Haqeeqat. 'I was doing three shows at once. I was shooting non-stop. I used to shoot 22-hours-a-day for those 2-3 years in the beginning, non-stop. I would take a nap whenever I got a chance. I would sleep in between shots. I used to carry on like that," he said.
He explained that while he occasionally managed a day off, about once every week or two, it was usually only when exhaustion forced him to slow down. Otherwise, he worked continuously, moving from set to set with barely any rest.
Unlike some of his peers who have spoken critically of the long hours, Hansraj described those years as invaluable. 'It was the most amazing experience of my life," he said, referring to the early 2000s as the 'golden period of television."
Expressing gratitude to Ekta Kapoor for giving him the opportunity, he shared how quickly his career and financial situation improved. 'When 2004 started, my bank balance wasn't that great. In fact, it was too weak. But, by the end of 2004, I got married, I bought a house in Bandra and I bought a car, my first car so my life was transformed," he recalled.
Hansraj's memories echo accounts from other television stars who worked during the same period. Shweta Tiwari, who played the lead in Kasautii Zindagii Kay, recently told Bharti Singh on her YouTube channel that she sometimes filmed for 72 hours without a break. 'Our industry was known for the fact that no one ever used to sleep or take rest. I used to shoot for 72 hours straight, without a break. After working a 30-day schedule, I used to get payment for 45 days, and that is because my first shift used to be from 7 in the morning to 7 in the evening, and the second shift was from 7 in the evening to 2 am in the morning," she said.
Actor Krystle D'Souza has also spoken about extreme work hours, telling Siddharth Kannan that she once worked for 60 hours straight, even fainting on set from exhaustion. 'I have fainted on the sets so many times. The team had to call for an ambulance. I would get IV drips and medicines, and go back to shoot. There was no time even go to the hospital, (laughs) they would bring the hospital on set," she said.

Karan Johar says Nadaaniyan was watched for the ‘wrong reasons', it was ‘dissed and b**ched': ‘Move on to next bad film, leave us alone'

Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor's OTT film Nadaaniyan received a lot of harsh criticism after its release. The film was brutally trolled on social media and became a part of memes. Directed by Shauna Gautam, it was produced by Karan Johar's Dharmatic Entertainment. In a recent interview, the filmmaker reacted to the widespread negativity around Nadaaniyan and urged people to move on. During a podcast with Suchin Mehrotra, Karan stated that the views of a project don't matter, if it's being watched for the 'wrong reasons'. 'As a creative artist, as a collaborator, no film that receives criticism ever makes me happy. How can it? Even if a gazillion people watched it and it wasn't liked, it was watched for the wrong reasons,' he said. The filmmaker added, 'You cannot! I am sorry, I will be very stupid to be deluded about the fact that it didn't get the love, did not get liked, it was dissed, it was b**ched, and maybe a bit more than it should have. I am like, 'Yaar, let it go' after a point. It's a film you didn't like, move on, can you?' ALSO READ | War 2 movie review LIVE Updates: Early reviews call climax of Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR film 'mind-boggling'; earns Rs 5.1 cr till 8 am Complaining about how content creators took advantage of the situation and made several videos while trolling Nadaaniyan, Karan shared, 'There were YouTube creators and content creators who were making four videos on it, you made one, right? You know you're getting the hits again and again, because bashing Nadaaniyan was like the fashion of that moment. It was really making people kind of go and watch your YouTube video and they were enjoying it. It was celebrated negatively and that does happen sometimes.' He continued, 'That put aside, I have no way to tell you that it got massive numbers so I am happy about it. No, I can't be happy about it. It didn't get the love. We have to accept it, acknowledge it, move on from it, and do better next time. That's all. How can I say that this show or movie is amazing because so many million people watched it? But if it didn't get the love, you are going to feel it in your heart.' Karan Johar revealed that his team has taken notes and would work on it. However, the audience should also move on from Nadaaniyan. 'All of us are very self aware, it's a part of my personality type. Will I go and apologise for it? No, I will probably speak with the team, take stock of it, and do that. We have dealt with it internally and that's all we really want to speak about it. But now, can you move on to the next bad show or film? Leave us alone. We have moved on and so should you,' he concluded. Besides Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor, Nadaaniyan also starred Suniel Shetty, Mahima Chaudhary, Jugal Hansraj, Dia Mirza, and Archana Puran Singh.

Independence Day 2025: Celebration Ideas For Home, School And Office On August 15

Last Updated: Independence Day 2025 brings a chance to celebrate India's legacy at home, school, or office. Here are creative and meaningful ideas to honour August 15 with pride and unity. Independence Celebration Ideas: India celebrates its 75th Independence Day on August 15. At the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, India awoke to the light of freedom and began its tryst with destiny, overcoming 200 years of British colonial rule and exploitation. The day remembers the great sacrifice of India's leaders and freedom fighters, who waged the battle against the oppressors and paved the way to a free, secular and democratic country that continues to grow strong despite its cultural and geopolitical challenges. On August 15, Indian citizens celebrate their nation and its incredible journey with a series of patriotic gestures. Be it at home, school or their offices, Indians mark the Independence Day with a list of thoughtful ideas and activities that reflect their great sense of pride in the motherland. Here are some of the ideas on how you can join in the Independence Day celebrations this year. Flag Hoisting Ceremony On every Independence Day in India, citizens gather with their family, friends and neighbours for the flag hoisting ceremonies and sing the national anthem across the country, paying respect to the tri-colour, which stands as a symbol of India's great strength: unity in diversity. Exhibitions Exhibitions are held across the nation to celebrate the country and highlight its remarkable journey, including pre-independence and post-independence achievements. Such exhibitions feature pictures of freedom fighters, other historical photographs, indigenous products, handcrafted items, books and other important readings related to the Independence struggle. They offer an excellent opportunity for kids and youth to understand the great pains taken by our freedom fighters to give us the country we have today. Art and Craft Competition Talking of children and young adults, the art and craft competitions organised on Independence Day present another wonderful opportunity to inculcate respect and understanding towards the freedom struggle and love for the motherland in a very creative and artistic way. From making tri-colour posters to creating rangolis on the turf, involving youth in such acts helps spread awareness about the nation while enhancing their artistic skills. Functions Many schools and educational institutions organise pre-Independence Day functions, where they not only invite elders, retired army personnel, or teachers to narrate stories about the freedom struggle but also engage kids and youngsters in music and dance shows on songs that celebrate the country. In such a setting, it is easier to create interest and curiosity about India's past and participation in present works among the youth.
