Victory parade after 2007 T20 WC beyond anything I had imagined: RP Singh
Singh took 12 wickets in seven games, as MS Dhoni-led India won the first-ever T20 World Cup in South Africa in September 2007. 'We won the T20 World Cup in South Africa, celebrated there, and then landed in Dubai, where a few people congratulated us for lifting the trophy. When we finally landed in Mumbai, we thought we had achieved something special, but the celebration parade was beyond anything I had imagined.'
"The roads were closed, and people were throwing things, chocolates, and even a small cake that someone tossed towards me saying, 'Please hold it and cut it.' I told them, 'Don't do this, it might fall.' It was raining, yet the crowds' energy was electric, with people celebrating wildly alongside us," said Singh in an episode of 'Cheeky Singles' on JioHotstar.
He also recounted a memorable moment from a Ranji Trophy match between Karnataka and his state team Uttar Pradesh in Meerut, involving the legendary Rahul Dravid. 'There was a Ranji Trophy match going on in Meerut, Karnataka vs Uttar Pradesh. Rahul Dravid bhai had come to play and scored 199 runs.
"That night, we went to dinner at someone's house. India's match was going on that day, and Sachin paaji was batting. He was playing a run-a-ball innings. We were both sitting on the side, and people were saying, 'Sachin should play a little faster'. But he was playing according to the situation of the match. Rahul bhai whispered in my ear, 'If they are saying so much to him, then how much would they have said to me?'' he recalled.
On a lighter note, Singh, who played 14 Tests, 58 ODIs and 10 T20Is for India, revealed he has been mistaken for other well-known personalities, including Rohit Sharma. 'I've been mistaken for Rohit Sharma on several occasions, not just once, but many times. And it doesn't stop there. Someone even called me 'George Clooney' once on social media. I told them, 'Now that's too much!''

Shubman Gill unlikely for Asia Cup T20I with selectors keen on status quo ahead of Tuesday selection meeting
India's Test captain Shubman Gill might find it difficult to get into the Asia Cup T20 side, with selectors struggling to find a way to slot him into the squad of 15. The Indian team management and selectors are of the opinion that Gill at the moment doesn't fit into their T20 scheme of things. Which means there are chances of Gill not boarding a flight to Dubai as the Indian team management want to stick to players whom they have backed post the 2024 T20 World Cup. The Indian Express understands that the selectors will convey this to the Indian board bosses before the selection committee assembles on August 19, to make them aware of the situation. The Indian team will continue to be led by Suryakumar Yadav, who has cleared his fitness. It is understood that in a series of informal talks before the selection, there was discussion on Gill's inclusion in the playing eleven. If India's Test captain makes it in the squad the team management would have to open the innings with him. However, with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson having done well in the top order, the team wants to stick with their tried and tested openers in whom they have invested so far. There was also a discussion informally on whether to drop Tilak Varma and accommodate Gill. However, the team management felt that it would be unfair on the left-handed batsman, who is holding the number two ranking in International Cricket Council (ICC) T20I's batting rankings. The team doesn't want Gill to be seen warming the bench. This means recent success in England, where a young Indian cricket team without stars earned a 2-2 draw, might not have much of an impact on the upcoming selection, given it's two different formats. ALSO READ | Empty slots: Players in contention for the last two spots for India in Asia Cup squad 'If Gill is included then he will straight away bat at the top and if he doesn't get a game then there is no point in having him. At the same time it will be unfair on Sanju, who did well in the past. If Gill gets in then Sanju might have to miss out and Jitesh might get a game,' a source in the BCCI informed. The Indian team management and selectors are looking at Mumbai's Yashasvi Jaiswal as the third opener. Jaiswal was part of the Indian team that won the 2024 World Cup but didn't get a game. There was an informal discussion whether to drop Jaiswal and pick Gill but it seems that the suggestion has been turned down. Gill's last appearance in T20I's came in July 2024 against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. India played a T20I series against Bangladesh at home followed by a tour to South Africa and later a home series against England. The selectors had not picked Gill in those three series that India played. However, with recent success in Test cricket, Gill is pushing his case hard for inclusion in white ball formats. In the IPL, Gill was the fourth highest run getter after Sai Sudharsan (759), Surya (717), Kohli (657) with 650 runs. Shreyas (604) and Jaiswal (559) were 6th and 7th respectively. With his success in the red ball format, the buzz had risen to make him the all-format captain of the Indian team. However, selectors are not jumping the gun after the England success and have decided to carry on with their old captain who is yet to lose a series in his leadership stint. The selectors and team management alongwith BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia will have the final round of discussion on August 19. The Asia Cup will be played from September 9 to 28.

Ex-India cricketer blames MS Dhoni for ending his career – 'It was captain's call'
Former India all-rounder has blamed for bringing an end to his cricketing career. Pathan played 29 Tests, 120 ODIs and 24 T20Is, claiming 301 international wickets before retiring in 2020. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! He burst onto the international scene in 2003 as a teenager, drawing comparisons with Wasim Akram. At his peak, he could swing the new ball prodigiously and contribute vital runs down the order, earning comparisons with Kapil Dev. His hat-trick against Pakistan in the 2006 Karachi Test remains historic. A match-winning spell in the 2007 T20 World Cup final cemented his reputation as a big-match player. But from 2009 onwards, his place in the team came into question, while his elder brother was preferred for his hard-hitting abilities. Poll Do you agree with Irfan Pathan's view that MS Dhoni ended his cricketing career? Yes, I completely agree No, I disagree 'In 2009, Gary Kirsten told me that I was playing well but Yusuf was better, and the team would go with him. We were in New Zealand then. Earlier, my brother and I had won a match in Sri Lanka from a losing position. We needed 60 off 29 balls with seven wickets down, and we still won. If it had been someone else, I don't think that player would have been dropped for at least a year,' Pathan said on Lallantop. 'In New Zealand, I was dropped from all five matches. I asked Gary the reason I wasn't getting chances, and what I could improve. He gave me two reasons. First, that some things were not in his hands. When I asked who was calling the shots, he said he couldn't tell me. 'The Playing XI was picked by the captain. This was Dhoni's call—that Irfan is not needed now. That was the captain's prerogative. 'If you are in the squad, you should be looking to play. As a player, I believed I should have played, and every player should think like that. My brother was a batting all-rounder and I was a bowling all-rounder. We both could have played.'
