What does the Texans' depth chart look like following the John Metchie trade?
According to multiple reports, the Texans are trading the fourth-year wideout John Metchie III to the Philadelphia Eagles. According to ESPN's D.J. Bien-Aime, the Texans will receive tight end Harrison Bryant and a 2026 fifth-round pick in exchange for the pass-catcher and 2026 sixth-round pick.
Funny enough, the Texans already traded those picks earlier this offseason to the Eagles in the C.J. Gardner-Johnson deal
A second-round pick out of Alabama, Metchie reunites with 2020 national championship teammate DeVonta Smith and should compete for reps in the slot. He missed his entire rookie season while battling leukemia after the Texans selected him in a trade-up following his breakout season with the Crimson Tide in 2021.
Entering a contract year, Metchie's totaled 40 career receptions for 412 yards and a touchdown in 29 games. This preseason, he was leading all Texans receivers with six catches for 53 yards. He was impressive, but in a crowded room, Metchie was probably fighting for one last spot alongside Braxton Berrios and Justin Watson.
As for Bryant, who is entering his sixth NFL season, the former John Mackey Award winner from Florida Atlantic has totaled 98 receptions for 877 yards and 10 touchdowns during his time with the Cleveland Browns and Las Vegas Raiders. He's expected to would give the Texans further depth at tight end in place of Brevin Jordan's season-ending injury.
With that in mind, let's take a look at the Texans' depth chart following the Metchie trade.
Note: This list is subject to change with players on the PUP list or NFI list. The list will certainly change after roster cutdown following the final preseason game on August 23.
Quarterback
Starter: C.J. Stroud
Reserves: Davis Mills, Graham Mertz*, Kedon Slovis
Analysis: There's no surprise here at any level. The Texans drafted Mertz with the intent of making him the new Case Keenum. So far, he's the favorite to land the No. 3 QB role.
Running Back
Starter: Nick Chubb
Second-team: Dameon Pierce, Dare Ogunbowale, Woody Marks*
Reserves: Jawhar Jordan, J.J. Taylor, British Brooks
Analysis: Brooks is more so a fullback, but since the team didn't post the position, he's listed as a running back. Joe Mixon, back at full health, will change the dynamic of the room, but for now, Pierce and Chubb will battle it out for first-team reps.
Wide Receiver
Starters: Nico Collins, Christian Kirk, Jayden Higgins*
Reserves: Jaylin Noel*, Xavier Hutchinson, Justin Watson, Braxton Berrios, Jared Wayne, Quintez Cephus, Daniel Jackson*, Xavier Johnson
Analysis: Noel could eventually move up the list into the first-team unit should Higgins continue to struggle, but there's no real surprise. At this point, the final move is between Berrios and Watson.
Tight End
Starter: Dalton Schultz
Second-team: Cade Stover
Reserves: Irv Smith Jr., Harrison Bryant Luke Lachey, Jakob Johnson (FB)
Analysis: Much like Brooks, Johnson is seeing his reps with tight ends because there's not a set position at fullback. Should he make the roster, he won't be seeing reps on Sunday in the same role as Schultz or Jordan. Keep an eye out on Stover this weekend to see if he firmly surpasses Schultz for the TE No. 1 job.
Offensive Line
Starters: Cam Robinson (LT), Laken Tomlinson (LG), Jarrett Patterson (OC), Tytus Howard (RG), Tay Ersery* (RT)
Reserves: Zac Thomas (LT), Juice Scruggs (LG), Jake Andrews (OC), Ed Ingram (RG), Blake Fisher (RT), Austin Deculus (LT), Ladarius Henderson (LG), Eli Cox (OC), Jaylon Thomas (RG)
Analysis: No real surprises on the offensive line, but the battle for center still is ablaze. Next week, Andrews might take over as the starting center, while depending on the severity of Robinson's injury, Ersery could shift over to left tackle for a week.
Defensive End
Starters: Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter
Reserves: Darrell Taylor, Derek Barnett, Dylan Horton, Casey Toolhill, Solomon Byrd
Analysis: Derek Barnett's return should make this room interesting, but Taylor's promising training might make him the favorite as the No. 3 pass-rusher. Is Horton fighting for a job over Toolhill and Byrd? Barring Denico Autry's release, it seems like two of three will be gone by Week 1.
Defensive Tackle
Starters: Sheldon Rankins, Mario Edwards Jr.
Reserves: Foley Fatukasi, Tim Settle, Tommy Togiai, Junior Tafuna, Haggai Ndubuisi,
Analysis: Settle might be listed as a second-team lineman, but he's going to see a bulk of first-team reps. It's a location, nothing more.
Linebackers
Starters: Azeez Al-Shaair, Henry To'oTo'o
Reserves: Christian Harris, Jake Hansen, Nick Niemann, E.J. Speed, Jamal Hill, K.C. Ossai
Analysis: Even without practicing, Harris being listed over Speed and Hansen is a sign he's still viewed as a prominent member of the staff. Expect him to be the LB3 should he ever begin to practice, which could be as soon as Wednesday.
Cornerbacks
Starters: Derek Stingley Jr., Kamari Lassiter, Jalen Pitre (nickel)
Reserves: Jaylin Smith*, Myles Bryant, D'Angelo Ross, Tremon Smith, Damon Arnette, Arthur Maulet
Analysis: Smith would be starting for several teams in the nickel after an impressive training camp. Now, he's the first call should any one of the starters go down. Even though Smith looks to be on the outside in as a cornerback, he's making the roster because of his special team skills.
Safety
Starters: Calen Bullock, C.J. Gardner-Johnson
Reserves: Jaylen Reed*, Jalen Mills, M.J. Stewart, Russell Yeast
Analysis: No surprises with the starters, though Reed could begin the regular season on the injured reserve.
Specialists
Starters: Ka'imi Fairbairn (K), Austin Brinkman* (LS), Tommy Townsend (P)
Analysis: There's nothing to say here

Rams HC Sean McVay Offers Another Cryptic Matthew Stafford Injury Update
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Rams continue to exist in an odd situation regarding the health of Matthew Stafford. A lingering back issue has led to the star passer being ruled out of practice for weeks. More news: Steelers to Sign Perfect DK Metcalf Partner to Bolster WR Room There was hope that Stafford received the right kind of treatment, and he was ready to return to practice a week ago. That was not the case, and the signal caller remained sidelined due to his nagging injury. Rams head coach Sean McVay has also been offering cryptic updates about Stafford's health, while other reports indicate the team is not that worried about the veteran's availability for Week 1 of the regular season. Stafford finally returned to practice on Monday, but McVay once again offered a concerning and cryptic update. Sean McVay said Matthew Stafford did 'a good job' today at practice but he doesn't have any updates on future plans. He did 26 plays of team drills. Today was his first day of practice and they are seeing how he feels, taking it 'a day at a time.' — Wyatt Miller (@wymill07) August 18, 2025 According to Wyatt Miller, Stafford "did a good job" during practice, but there are "updates on future plans." Stafford returned for his first practice in weeks, and McVay indicated the team is taking it "day-by-day." There doesn't sound like a lot of optimism being shared by McVay on the nature of what Stafford is going through. Matthew Stafford #9 of the Los Angeles Rams reacts in the first quarter during the NFC Divisional Playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on January 19, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Matthew Stafford #9 of the Los Angeles Rams reacts in the first quarter during the NFC Divisional Playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on January 19, 2025 in Philadelphia, news: Bengals Receive Strong Trey Hendrickson Warning From Former NFL QB Granted, head coaches often offer "coach speak" when it comes to matters such as this one, so as not to blow things out of proportion. However, back injuries can often linger and get worse. The fact that McVay is not being forthright about the severity of the injury is concerning, especially given Stafford's injury history and age. Stafford is not getting any younger, and missing games has become a bit of a theme for the signal caller. The hope is that McVay is being as cautious as possible with Stafford, so that his longevity is upheld through 17+ games this season. The Rams are considered a playoff contender, and should be if Stafford is healthy. Should Stafford miss time, Jimmy Garoppolo will be leading the offense. It would be a shame if Stafford cannot suit up, as the Rams brought in Davante Adams, who should be a huge one-two punch alongside Puka Nacua. For now, there are still multiple weeks until Stafford needs to be healed in order to play in Week 1. He has returned to practice, which is good news. The bad news is that McVay does not seem to be offering any kind of confidence regarding Stafford's back ailment. For more on the Rams and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.

Vic Fangio's most important quality isn't getting mentioned enough
One of Vic Fangio's most endearing qualities is one that isn't getting mentioned enough. We were told to move on weeks ago. Still, occasionally, we ponder what we witnessed from the Philadelphia Eagles in February. Total domination of the Kansas City Chiefs- That's perhaps the best way to describe it. You've probably heard that once or twice or described it as such. One of the heroes played zero snaps. In his first run as defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio devised a plan to befuddle the defending champs. Zero blitzes... Six sacks... Zero points scored by Kansas City until the game was finally decided and out of reach. Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes had zero answers. That night will be talked about in Eagles lore forever, but it wouldn't have happened if Fangio failed at perhaps the most critical part of coaching. Vic Fangio's most endearing coaching quality Philadelphia refuses to label itself as the defending Super Bowl champions. We all understand why, but that's precisely what they are. Since he accepted the role of defensive coordinator, Fangio has been quite a pleasant surprise. He's funnier than we assumed he'd be. He answers every question asked of him in greater detail than expected. Truth be told, we didn't see that coming from one of the game's wise men, especially one who is so old-school in his approach. At first glance, you wonder if Coach Fangio would struggle in finding ways to connect with a roster full of young talent. As it turns out, that might be his most surprising, satisfying, and needed quality. One of the more intriguing portions of the Vic Fangio Eagles story is the winding road that led him to the defensive coordinator chair. He served as a consultant to the Eagles organization in 2022. Jonathan Gannon had moved on. Philadelphia probably would have hired Fangio then (2023), but he had already taken a job with the Miami Dolphins. How do we say this and do so politely? Miami wasn't fond of Fangio's old-school approach. They ran him out of town, and Philadelphia landed the guy they wanted, albeit one year later. The Birds were coming off a nightmare finish to what began as a promising season. The 2023 campaign will be forever remembered for a collapse and the decision by players to ignore their defensive coordinator. Sean Desai was unable to connect with players and thus alienated them. Philadelphia allowed Matt Patricia to assume playcalling duties, and things immediately spiraled from bad to worse. Though it's hard to believe this now, there were whispers about the Fangio hire. How was he going to connect with players in Philadelphia when he had failed to do so after taking his talents to South Beach? Who knows what he said, but thank goodness he said it. Coach got his players to buy in, and Philadelphia is better for that. Many of the crucial cogs in Fangio's defense are still playing under the terms of their rookie contracts, so if the math is correct, we're discussing an age gap of four decades or more in certain instances. Those years can sometimes feel like 'dog years', but Philadelphia makes it work. Credit a mature locker room with youngsters who are mature beyond their years. Nolan Smith even joked that learning from Coach Fangio was a smooth transition after learning from another old-school thinker. Kirby Smart was his head coach in college while with the Georgia Bulldogs. It's from these wise old men that Smith has developed a larger appreciation for the hard work it takes to be great. So, yes, Fangio can shut down a high-powered Chiefs offense. He has probably forgotten more about the game than great coaches will ever know or remember, but coaching acumen means little if your layers don't buy in and back you. Ask Sean Desai. Ask Matt Patricia.

NFL Insider Makes Promising Prediction for Commanders WR Terry McLaurin
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. When it comes to ongoing storylines in the NFL, Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin sits at the top of the list. As the regular season gets ready to kick off, one insider made a bold prediction about this saga. Last week, a rather promising development emerged regarding the Commanders' wideout. He has been taken off the PUP list, which in theory gets him closer to joining his teammates on the field. McLaurin was put on the list when he arrived late to training camp due to an ankle injury. McLaurin still has work to do before he's on the field with his teammates, but it's a step in the right direction. That said, the primary objective for the organization is locking down its homegrown talent and putting an end to this standoff. Photo by/Getty Images NFL insider thinks Terry McLaurin saga could end before Week 1 While McLaurin is progressing physically, he remains at odds with the front office. The two sides have been unable to agree on proper terms for a contract extension, but one insider believes things could work themselves out very soon. In a recent column for ESPN, Ben Solak touched on his observations from training camps across the league. Among his many stops was Washington, where he was able to provide fresh updates on the disgruntled receiver. Solak reported what many other insiders have echoed, that being the Commanders have no plans on moving McLaurin despite his trade request. Based on what he heard while at camp, he also made a strong prediction that the veteran wideout will ink a new deal before Week 1. "Not only can I not find anyone who believes wide receiver Terry McLaurin will play for another team in 2025," Solak wrote. "I can't find anyone who has a remotely plausible hypothetical in which McLaurin plays for another team in 2025. This section might better be called one thing I didn't hear: a way McLaurin actually gets out of Washington. I strongly believe this standoff will end with a compromise extension before Week 1." That said, resolving things before the regular season begins would be a huge victory for the Commanders. If they want any chance at building off their success in 2024, they're going to need McLaurin on the field helping elevate quarterback Jayden Daniels. With just a few weeks to go, only time will tell if Solak's prediction comes to fruition. For more Washington Commanders and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
