Verulam police are investigating the murder of a 51-year-old man who was gunned down in his vehicle while travelling to his home in the Mhlasini area in a suspected hit on Thursday.
Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said the man was travelling to his residence with two passengers.
Balram said that at approximately 6.51pm, the Rusa operations centre received multiple calls for assistance after gunmen opened fire on a blue Hyundai i10 at the corner of Hazelmere Drive and Quarry Road in Redcliffe.
When reaction officers and Rusa paramedics arrived at the scene, they discovered the driver of the vehicle slumped in his seat.
'He was shot multiple times and died before first responders arrived,' he said.

According to Balram, the deceased's 32-year-old girlfriend and his work colleague were in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
'The female sustained a gunshot wound to her buttocks, and the male was grazed by a bullet on his back.'
He said it was established that three men who were standing on the side of the road suddenly opened fire on the vehicle.
'Both passengers disembarked and fled. The gunmen continued shooting at the driver as they walked towards the car. They thereafter fled on foot in an unknown direction,' said Balram.
Balram added that 13 spent 9mm cartridges were recovered at the scene.
Provincial police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said the motive for the killing is unknown.
'Verulam police have opened a case of murder and two of attempted murder following an incident in which three people were allegedly attacked while in the vehicle on 3 July 2025,' she said.
Ngcobo said it was reported that the victims were ambushed by unknown people while driving.
'The suspects opened fire, fatally wounding a 51-year-old man and injuring two victims, who were taken to hospital for medical attention,' she confirmed.
According to Balram, the deceased man is believed to be an employee of eThekwini Municipality. When approached for confirmation, municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana referred queries related to criminal matters to the SAPS.
'The municipality does not have the authority to investigate murder incidents because this is the mandate of the South African Police Services, and we will therefore not be able to comment or confirm any information,' she said.

Hijacked taxi recovered in Upper Tongaat, three suspects arrested

A dramatic police and private security operation led to the arrest of three men and the recovery of a hijacked school taxi in Upper Tongaat this morning, August 6. The incident began in Blackburn, where a 43-year-old driver on his way to collect schoolchildren had his path blocked by two men on a dirt road. A third man allegedly emerged from nearby sugarcane fields wielding a dagger and forced the driver into the back of the car. The men allegedly assaulted him and tied him up before fleeing in the hijacked VW Crafter. Fortunately, no children had been picked up at the time of the hijacking. At 8.24am, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a tip-off from a concerned member of the public and immediately dispatched all available officers. The taxi, fitted with a tracking device, was traced moving through Hambanathi and later spotted heading towards Esenembe on the R614. RUSA officers, joined by Verulam Saps and multiple private security companies, intercepted the taxi at a petrol station in Upper Tongaat, where the men stopped to refuel. The suspects were arrested just over 20 minutes after the hijacking took place. Authorities praised the swift co-ordination between law enforcement and private security teams, which ensured the safe recovery of the vehicle and the driver. RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram warned hijackings are on the rise and that criminals are changing their behaviour. 'We have noticed an increase in victims being taken with the vehicles,' said Balram. 'This is because it delays the victims from calling law enforcement or the tracking companies. They take the victims along before leaving them in an isolated area. By the time law enforcement finds the victims, the suspects are long gone.' Balram said he has also noticed an increase in hijackings when the weather is poor or visibility is low. 'Rain and fog hamper the search helicopters, making it harder to locate the vehicles from above,' added Balram. Investigations are ongoing. ‘Time-wasting fee': Escort ‘extorts R70k' from man who refused her services

A KwaZulu-Natal man has allegedly been extorted of R70,000 by an escort after he declined her services. The man had made telephonic contact with the woman on Friday to inquire about her services. However, he had second thoughts, declined to make a booking and ended the conversation. He then started receiving threatening messages from the woman, who demanded money she called a 'time-wasting fee'. According to Reaction Unit SA (Rusa), whom the man contacted for help, the man initially refused to make the payment. 'The extortionist forwarded him pictures from his social media accounts and threatened to contact his family and inform them he attempted to solicit the services of an escort,' said Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram. 'T he victim thereafter made three payments totalling R70,000 into three different bank accounts provided by the woman. The client [contacted] Rusa on Monday after he received demands for further payment of R25,000.' Balram said the man's bank accounts were depleted. SowetanLIVE
