Succession star Brian Cox: Cillian Murphy would make an ‘interesting' James Bond

Powys County Times10 hours ago
Actor Brian Cox has said Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy would be an 'interesting' choice to play James Bond.
In an interview with Radio Times, the Succession star discussed the upcoming second series of reality competition 007: Road To A Million, in which he returns as The Controller, the stern and sardonic taskmaster.
The Prime Video series follows eight contestants as they are dropped into the high-stakes world of James Bond, where they take on missions that push them to the limits, testing them physically and psychologically, for the chance to win £1 million.
Of the role of the 007 agent, Cox said: 'It's only natural that it goes through changes because we start off young and end up old.
'Is Cillian Murphy being recommended? I think that would be interesting.
'I like Cillian. He's very real, he's got no crap about him.'
Amazon MGM Studios previously announced that Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight will write the script for the next James Bond film, which will be directed by Dune's Denis Villeneuve.
Irish actor Murphy played the lead role in Knight's TV series of hard-drinking gang leader Tommy Shelby.
In the interview, Cox described Russian President Vladimir Putin as a 'definite villain' and criticised US President Donald Trump's administration.
The Scottish actor, 79, said: 'There's certainly a lot of people around who I feel are villainous.
'With what's happening in Ukraine, Putin is a definite villain, for my money.
'I think some of the American behaviour has definitely been unthinking.
'What's tragic is that America was built on the notion of egalitarianism, and the present administration don't want us to be equal.'

Shannon Matthews' mum Karen assaulted in prison as pal shares shocking details about jail stint

Karen Matthews friend Julie Bushby opened up on This Morning about her friend's eight years in prison following her conviction of kidnapping her daughter Shannon in 2008 A friend of Shannon Matthews' mum Karen has disclosed that she would make prison visits during her eight-year stretch for orchestrating her daughter's kidnapping. Nine-year-old Shannon vanished on February 19, 2008 in West Yorkshire, triggering a massive police hunt and community search that lasted nearly a month. ‌ Shannon was discovered safe and sound at a property owned by Michael Donovan - the uncle of her mother Karen's partner Craig Meehan. It subsequently emerged that Karen had plotted the abduction with Meehan to cash in on the media attention. ‌ Karen's pal Julie Bushby featured on This Morning (Tuesday) ahead of Prime Video's new documentary The Hunt for Shannon Matthews, reports the Mirror. ‌ Discussing the prison visits, Bushby revealed that Karen would occasionally be "black and blue" during her jail stays. Speaking on This Morning, she told Andi Peters and Emma Willis: "There was a time I went that she was black and blue but she walked into that many doors. "It was a different story each time I went. She just tells me she was scared of family." ‌ She added: "I had so many questions. I used to go visit her at prison. I asked her the same questions." When questioned about her feelings when Karen was nicked for kidnapping Shannon, Bushby said: "When she actually came out with it, it was mixed emotions. ‌ "Relief that it was over, anger, disappointment, used and abused - but not just me, the entire community. She just made us look like plant pots." Matthews was freed from jail in April 2012 after completing half her term. This follows reports that her paedophile former partner has been 'forced to flee again as his home is vandalised'. ‌ Karen is set to feature in Amazon Prime Video's forthcoming documentary The Hunt for Shannon Matthews. Last year, a musical parody about the shocking abduction of Shannon Matthews was branded "cruel and sadistic" by the public. ‌ Performances by troupe K*** and the Gang were completely sold out when Shannon Matthews: The Musical premiered in 2022, with the group planning a film adaptation of the production. Local Labour councillor Mussarat Pervaiz condemned the show for trivialising the girl's ordeal, describing it as "disgusting". Prime Video will re-examine the case in its upcoming documentary which forms part of a large series of true crime investigations airing on the streaming service this year. ‌ A TV insider previously told The Sun: 'The original case dumbfounded the nation when it happened and it took years before many could truly grasp what had happened. 'Shows like 2017 ITV drama The Moorside, which starred Sheridan Smith, tried to shed some light on the events but it continues to be a subject that stirs up an array of emotions. 'The creators of the new documentary hope that the passing of time and the benefit of distance might help lend some perspective on the story.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Gary Lineker's Match of the Day replacements confirm another major change for new season

Gary Lineker is no longer the host of Match of the Day, with the former presenter's successors sharing details of another change to the long-running BBC programme A new hosting team isn't the only change to BBC flagship football show Match of the Day this season. The broadcaster is also rebranding the Sunday show previously known as Match of the Day 2, dropping the '2' to leave it on equal footing with the Saturday night episodes. ‌ Gary Lineker hosted Match of the Day for the last time on the final day of the 2024-25 season. He has been replaced by a rotating team of three anchors - Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan - who will share presenting duties. ‌ 'Why is it [the Saturday show] the top job?' Chapman asked in a Radio Times interview. 'I'm intrigued, really, because I've never viewed Saturdays and Sundays as any different.' ‌ Logan agreed, saying: 'In many weeks, Match of the Day 2 has been a stronger line-up. Match of the Day is Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays [for Champions League highlights]. "It's not Match of the Day 1, Match of the Day 2, it's just Match of the Day. That will be the most noticeable change, apart from not having Gary involved.' Logan and Chapman have both covered football for the BBC in recent seasons, while Cates anchored live coverage on Sky Sports. The trio's arrival comes with the BBC also rebranding its Champions League highlights show as 'Match of the Day: Champions League' to bring Saturday, Sunday and midweek shows under the same branding. Chapman is in line to host the first Saturday show of the season, with Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney joining him. Cates will be on presenting duties the following Wednesday, hosting a highlights show after the Super Cup clash between Spurs and Paris Saint-Germain. Lineker's exit as Match of the Day host was confirmed before the end of last season, but he had been slated to continue hosting the BBC's FA Cup and World Cup coverage. However, that changed after he shared a pro-Palestine video which attracted criticism for its use of a rat emoji. ‌ 'I missed it [the rat emoji]. To be honest, I wouldn't have understood the connotations anyway until it was pointed out to me," Lineker told The New World, indicating his BBC exit was a case of 'quit or be quitted'. "I genuinely didn't see it. I'm not an idiot. I may not have known it was an antisemitic trope, but I would have wondered why someone had put a rat there. Why would you ever conflate a rodent with a human? I wouldn't do that on purpose – it would be the biggest act of self-harm ever. But, yeah, it was a tough couple of days.'

'Masterpiece' action movie shoots up Netflix charts days after 'terrible' remake drops

The Steven Spielberg film was initially released in 2005 and it has seen a resurgence in popularity. The Netflix Top 10 UK chart has seen an unexpected title creep back in following the release of an unpopular remake. ‌ The streamer is home to some iconic action movies by some of the world's most esteemed directors, including Steven Spielberg, who has just finished work on The Thursday Murder Club film. One film in particular has caught viewers' attention and is currently sitting at number eight in the platform's Top 10 movies list. ‌ Initially released two decades ago, War of the Worlds starred Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning as a father and daughter who must fight for survival when extra-terrestrials invade Earth. The film was a commercial success and received positive reviews, with critics praising Spielberg's ability to capture the thrilling and suspenseful elements of H. G. Wells' 1898 novel. ‌ The original film is climbing the Netflix rankings following the release of a Prime Video remake starring rapper and actor Ice Cube. Ice Cube plays Will Radford, a Department of Homeland Security official who monitors an array of feeds for terrorist threats. ‌ However, he realises he is too late when meteor strikes occur worldwide and alien tripods emerge, destroying everything in their path. The film, which was first announced at the start of the Covid pandemic, was quietly released in July 2025 and only has a 3% positive review rating on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Andy Meek of Boy Genius Report went as far as to name the film the "worst film of the year". ‌ Matt 73132 took to Reddit to share: "The new War of the Worlds movie with Ice Cube is so awful I couldn't even finish it." He added: "Casting Ice Cube for War of the World's was a terrible idea. He doesn't fit the role. I knew it was gonna be bad when I saw that." ‌ However, some fans thoroughly enjoyed it with Muchtox1cboss sharing on Google Reviews: "Where do I even begin? The 2025 War of the Worlds is nothing short of a cinematic spectacle. "From its opening moments, director Rich Lee crafts a tense, visually striking reimagining of H.G. Wells' classic, blending gripping performances with a modern, screen-driven narrative. "Ice Cube delivers a commanding presence, while Eva Longoria and the supporting cast bring heart and humanity to a world on the brink."
