Iraq Expands Gas Projects to Curb Flaring

Iraq Business09-06-2025
By John Lee.
As part of Iraq's government-backed gas development programme, the Ministry of Oil has reported significant progress in reducing gas flaring and increasing gas utilisation.
It says the Ministry has raised associated gas capture from 53% to 70%, and dry gas production from 1,300 to 1,800 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd).
Key projects already completed or underway include:
The government aims to end routine flaring by 2028 and increase gas output to 3,000 mmscfd by 2030, aligning with Iraq's environmental commitments under the 2016 Paris Agreement.
In liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), production rose from 2 million tonnes in 2024 to 3 million tonnes in 2025. Exports also surged from 250,000 tonnes in 2023 to 1 million tonnes in 2025. LPG systems were installed in over 41,000 homes and more than 38,000 vehicles.
To expand storage capacity, the Ministry completed 8 of 16 spherical LPG tanks, each with a 3,000-cubic-metre capacity, adding 24,000 cubic metres overall.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to maximise national resource utilisation, enhance electricity supply, and boost petrochemical production. Gas field contracts under the 5th and 6th licensing rounds have been awarded to international companies, alongside dozens of investment agreements to develop both associated and free gas resources.

Iraq Amends Funding Structure for China Framework Agreement

By John Lee. The Iraqi Cabinet has approved amendments to its earlier decision (No. 229 of 2025) concerning the Iraq-China Framework Agreement. The revisions allow for the reallocation of project funding under the investment account of the agreement, based on proposals prepared by the Diwani Order Committee No. 23995 and in line with the Federal Budget Law. As part of these changes, the financing source for Phase 1 of a 250-megawatt solar power plant, to be developed by the Ministry of Electricity, will be shifted from the credit account to the investment account of the framework agreement. According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, this shift aligns the funding mechanism with the requirements of Iraq's federal budget legislation. (Source: PMO)

Iraq "to Resume Oil Exports via Turkiye this week"

By John Lee. Iraq's Minister of Oil, Hayan Abdul Ghani, has reportedly announced that the country will resume crude oil exports through the Ceyhan pipeline to Turkiye either today (Wednesday) or tomorrow. Speaking during the inauguration of several oil station development and rehabilitation projects in Kirkuk, the Minister confirmed an initial export volume of 80,000 barrels per day, following an agreement with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), according to the state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA) . It says he also noted a production boost at the wet oil station in northern Kirkuk, with an increase of 25,600 barrels per day, bringing the facility's total capacity to 90,000 barrels per day. The resumption of exports marks a significant step in restoring Iraq's northern oil flows, which have been suspended since March 2023 amid legal and political disputes.
