Full-time dentist set to compete with Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler at US Open weeks after losing dad to cancer

DENTIST Matt Vogt is determined to extract as much joy as possible from his emotional homecoming, as he makes his US Open debut just a couple of months after losing his father to cancer. The fact that the tournament is being played at Oakmont in Pennsylvania - where Vogt caddied for six years as a youngster before earning a college scholarship - makes the event even more poignant. 5 Matt Vogt is a full-time dentist Credit: INSTAGRAM @thedentistsatgc 5 He will tee it up at the US Open golf major for the first time Credit: AP 5 Vogt will go up against giants of the sport like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler Credit: Getty Vogt, 34, was born and brought up a few miles from So he is guaranteed plenty of support this week, especially as TV stations in the US have been portraying his story as a modern-day fairytale. At 6ft 6in, the big-hitting amateur will not be hard to spot. And he expects to experience an emotional roller-coaster over the next few days. So he has plenty of game, despite the fact he has never even considered turning professional himself. Vogt alternated between smiling broadly and fighting back tears, as he explained what it meant to be teeing off in a Major championship just a few yards away from where he used to hang out in the caddyshack. 'Even walking up the ninth fairway today after signing some autographs for some little kids - which was pretty awesome, by the way - I kind of looked up and thought about it. 'Anyone who's lost a parent, you feel these brief spurts of emotion, from time to time. "He had colon cancer. I wear the blue ribbon for that, and I say a prayer every night for people who have been affected by cancer. 'It's a horrible, horrible thing. He got that diagnosis last year, and it wasn't good. "Over the past few months before his passing, you could see it was starting to take a toll. So it's emotional, but honestly, I know he's in a better place. 'He was beginning to suffer, and that's something no one ever wants to see. "Although I wish he was still here with us, there's a sense of peace among our family. And I hope he's at peace as well, because it was hard. Brian Dowling and Suzanne Kane's 98FM replacement hosts unveiled

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info The new voices to grace the airwaves of 98FM taking over Brian Dowling and Suzanne Kane's slot have been announced. Big Brother icon Brian stepped away from the show last Friday, capping off a stint that lasted over two years. He shared the mic with Suzanne, who hopped on board in 2021 but had been missing from the airwaves since late February. For the sunny months ahead, Paul Ryder and Leanne Hanafin are set to steer the ship of the former pair's show on 98FM. Paul Ryder, a household name since dazzling Ireland on the talent scene with his drag performance on Ireland's Got Talent in 2018, is also known for guest presenting on Ireland AM and spinning tracks on 98FM during weekends, reports RSVP Live. Leanne, already familiar with the 98FM landscape through her longstanding involvement with the station, has been the go-to substitute for Suzanne Kane in recent times. Leanne broke the news this morning, saying on the broadcast: "Welcome to a brand new show on 98FM. We are so excited to be here with you." Paul chimed in: "We're here for the whole summer. We're going to have three months of absolute fun. We want you to be involved. It's as much your show as it is ours so we can't wait to get cracking." (Image: Instagram/Leanne Hanafin) Brian said his final goodbye to listeners last Friday. In his parting words to the followers of the show, he said: "I'm lucky enough that I meet our listeners on a daily basis. They are the salt of the earth, lovely people and I've had a laugh every single day. "I've never taken the job for granted. I've appreciated every day. I've been sat in front of this mic and I'm being myself. I don't regret any of it. I don't think you should have regrets in life. I took a risk actually taking the job on. I was living in Straffan in Kildare at the time and I don't drive. I've never worked in radio before. "I probably didn't give myself enough credit. I said, 'I signed up for this now and it's two years. What am I going to do?'". To anyone - I joined this show when I was 45 years old. Never be afraid to take a risk. Never be afraid to say yes. I said yes to something that I couldn't do, but I said that I was going to learn how to do it." Suzanne confirmed her departure from 98FM last week. A statement on her Instagram read: "After nearly 5 years, I'm stepping away from my role presenting 10AM to 1PM on 98FM. "Anyone who knows me, will know how much I adore radio and the Bauer family inside Marconi house, but for now, it's time to let the 'Good Times' roll for someone else. "A word to the amazing team, I loved the madness and radio nerdiness that we all shared and how much we cared. Radio is really special and that's because of the people who do the heavy lifting to make it all come together. I'm glad to have been on this rollercoaster with you all. "To everyone who listened to the show. I loved sharing my life and my kids with the soundest listeners on 98FM. We've been through a lot together and thank you for always turning up for me, it means more than any of you will know. "Lastly, a quick word to my kiddos Oisín, Hannah and Sadie. Thank you for letting me have a go of my dream radio job and playing ball every morning, even the really tough ones, so I could be in front of the mic by 10am and of course, [her husband] Joey. The voice of support, the constant, the reassurance, who always has the reminder 'We'll figure it out, we always do'. Onward to the next adventure."
