Trump Restores Military Bases to ‘Racist' Confederate Names
Speaking at Fort Bragg to kick off festivities for the 250th anniversary of the US Army, Trump told the audience he would rename army bases that had been changed under the Biden administration.
'For a little breaking news, we are also going to be restoring the names to Fort Pickett, Fort Hood, Fort Gordon, Fort Rucker, Fort Polk, Fort AP Hill, and Fort Robert E Lee,' the president said.
'We won a lot of battles out of those forts… And I'm superstitious, you know, I like to keep it going, right?'
The announcement is likely to prove contentious as Confederate symbols are viewed as signs of racism and white supremacy for many Black people, representing those who fought to perpetuate oppression.
Robert E Lee, for example, was a decorated military officer from Virginia who was responsible for some of the Confederacy's most consequential victories in its fight to protect slavery.
In 2023, the army base that bore his name was changed to Fort Gregg-Adams in honour of two African American officers.
The president made his announcement to a largely pro-Trump crowd of military members, who booed as he took aim at the 'fake media', California Governor Gavin Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and his predecessor Joe Biden.
'You think this crowd would have turned up for Biden?' he joked.
He also used the speech to highlight the protests in California, vowing to 'liberate Los Angeles from the migrant invasion' after days of unrest in America's second most populous state.
The address at Fort Bragg kicked off the army's 250th anniversary, a celebration that will culminate with an unprecedented parade in Washington on June 14, the day of Trump's 79th birthday.
The sound and visual extravaganza will take place along Constitution Avenue and feature thousands of uniformed troops marching in formation, as well as about 100 military vehicles, including M1A2/Abrams tanks; Black Hawk, Apache, and Chinook helicopters.
Trump's announcement about renaming army bases was welcomed by MAGA allies and many military members at Fort Bragg, a base that was also renamed by the administration earlier this year.
Others on social media were far more scathing. One user said the move 'romanticized' white supremacy; another account, belonging to Republicans Against Trump, quipped that 'nothing says patriotism like honoring enemies of the United States.'

Army soldier charged with attempting to share sensitive data on US tanks with Russia

Federal prosecutors allege that Taylor Adam Lee, who is an active-duty service member stationed at Fort Bliss and possesses a very high, top-secret clearance, offered assistance to Russia and sent technical information about the M1A2 Abrams tank online in June. Lee, according to prosecutors, stated online that 'the USA is not happy with me for trying to expose their weaknesses,' and said, 'At this point I'd even volunteer to assist the Russian federation when I'm there in any way.' Prosecutors also allege that in July, Lee, who holds a top secret/sensitive compartmented information (TS/SCI) clearance, attempted to provide sensitive information on tank vulnerabilities to a person he believed to be a Russian intelligence officer. At the end of the month, prosecutors allege, Lee delivered what appeared to be a piece of tank hardware to a storage unit in El Paso, Texas. After doing so, prosecutors say Lee sent a message to the individual that said, 'Mission accomplished.' In addition to the alleged violation of the Espionage Act – which makes it illegal to mishandle national defense information. Lee has also been charged with attempting to export controlled technical data without a license, a violation of the Arms Export Control Act. The government has requested that he be detained without bond, according to court documents. Lee made his initial appearance in federal court Wednesday, according to DOJ, and it was not immediately clear if he has retained an attorney. CNN has reached out to the Army for comment. Roman Rozhavsky, assistant director of the FBI's Counterintelligence Division, said in a statement Wednesday that Lee provided the information to the individual he believed worked for Russian intelligence in exchange for Russian citizenship. 'Today's arrest is a message to anyone thinking about betraying the U.S. – especially service members who have sworn to protect our homeland,' Rozhavsky added. The commanding general of Army Counterintelligence Command, Brigadier General Sean F. Stinchon, labeled the arrest 'an alarming reminder of the serious threat' facing the US Army. 'Thanks to the hard work of Army Counterintelligence Command Special Agents and our FBI partners, Soldiers who violate their oath and become insider threats will absolutely be caught and brought to justice, and we will continue to protect Army personnel and safeguard equipment,' he said in a statement.

Minors account for half of DC's carjacking arrests since 2023 — including pint-sized perps as young as 12: police data
More than half of the carjackers arrested in Washington, DC over the last two years were minors, the majority of whom were just 15 and 16 years old, according to a shocking review of police data in the nation's capital — which has come under the spotlight after President Trump's latest threat of a federal takeover. Since August 2023, DC police have collared 333 carjacking suspects and 56% of those busts were of kids under 18, figures from Metropolitan Police Department show. And 60% of the juveniles arrested for stealing cars were 15 or 16 — but ages ranged from 17 to as young as 12, according to police records. Both girls pleaded guilty to murder, but were only sent to juvenile facilities until they turned 21.
