Jacob Bethell will lead England in the upcoming three match T20I series against Ireland, starting from September 17. Bethell is set to captain England in absence of regular skipper Harry Brook, who is being rested along with other all-format players as part of workload management.
During the T20Is against England, Bethell, who play for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Indian Premier League (IPL), will become England's youngest men's captain.
The 21-year-old Bethell will surpass the record currently held by Monty Bowden, who was 23 and 144 days when he led England against South Africa at Cape Town on the Test tour of 1888-89.
"Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage," England men's selector Luke Wright said.

Meanwhile, Sonny Baker has won his maiden England call-up after impressing in the winter with the England Lions and during the Blast and The Hundred. Baker is named in both the South Africa ODI squad and the Ireland T20I group, joining a largely settled limited-overs core.
"Sonny is a player we have identified for a while and he was impressive during the England Lions tours last winter. He has carried that form into this season in white-ball cricket with Hampshire and Manchester Originals and deservedly gets his opportunity," Wright said.

On the other hand, Rehan Ahmed returns to the ODI side after a prolific summer with the bat. He is included in all three squads.

With Brook, Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, and Jamie Smith rested for the Ireland leg, Marcus Trescothick will stand in for Brendon McCullum as head coach.

Ajit Agarkar gets last-minute Vaibhav Suryavanshi request for India's Asia Cup squad: 'Make a bold call, don't say...'

The All India Men's Senior Selection Committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, is all set to pick the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, August 19, in Mumbai, and there are several hard calls awaiting the men that matter. However, ahead of the selection meeting, chairman of selectors Agarkar has been told to pick teen sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi into the squad. Former national selector Kris Srikkanth reckons the time is right to bring Suryavanshi into the senior squad. Ajit Agarkar told to make a bold move and pick Vaibhav Suryavanshi(Action Images via Reuters) Vaibhav Suryavanshi is the toast of the town ever since his debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 for Rajasthan Royals. The southpaw smashed the fastest century by an Indian in the tournament after bringing up the three-figure mark off just 35 balls against the Gujarat Titans. The left-handed batter, 14, continued with his form in the U19 ODI series against England, smashing 355 runs in five matches, including a knock of 143 in the fourth ODI. Suryavanshi has also been named in the squad for the upcoming U19 series against Australia. However, Srikkanth reckons the time is right to get the youngster a taste of international cricket. Don't say things like let him mature. He is already playing with remarkable maturity. His shot-making has been on another level. If I were chairman, I would definitely have him in the 16," Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel. Samson is doubtful Despite Sanju Samson scoring three T20I centuries last year, Srikkanth reckons the right-handed batter is not a sure-shot starter in the Asia Cup squad. He believes Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Sai Sudharsan should be in the reckoning to make the team as openers. 'Samson is doubtful, according to me. My first-choice opener is Abhishek Sharma, no doubt. I will have two more openers. My picks would be Vaibhav Suryavanshi or Sai Sudharsan, with Shubman Gill as an option. If I were a selector, I would keep Vaibhav in the 15 for the T20 World Cup,' said Srikkanth. 'He has been outstanding. I think it should be Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Sai Sudharsan. I would take two out of these three. That would be my preference,' he added. Earlier this year, Sanju Samson found the going tough in the five-match series against England as he was repeatedly found susceptible to bouncers. Jofra Archer dismissed him repeatedly by bowling deliveries around his shoulder area.

Varun Chakaravarthy Targets T20 World Cup After Asia Cup, Acknowledges SKY & Gambhir's Support

Last Updated: Indian spinner Varun Chakaravarthy shared his Asia Cup preparations, praising T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir. Indian spinner Varun Chakaravarthy discussed his preparations for the upcoming Asia Cup, starting on September 9, and the support he received from T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir upon his return to white-ball cricket for India. India's Asia Cup campaign will begin on September 10 against UAE. Spinner Varun, who has taken 33 wickets in 18 T20Is so far, aims to be a crucial addition to the Indian setup, having performed impressively since his return to international cricket last year, including two five-wicket hauls in T20Is and one in ODIs during the ICC Champions Trophy-winning campaign. In an interview with Revsportz, Varun mentioned that he is currently on a one-month break, focusing on his 'strength and conditioning, fitness, my bowling, my batting, and everything." 'The Asia Cup is coming up, and for the white-ball players, they have got a good break after the IPL. I did play TNPL (Tamil Nadu Premier League), but still I have got a one-month break right now. It has been a good time to work on my strength and conditioning, fitness, my bowling, my batting, and everything. I got time to rejuvenate my entire self in a holistic way. Feeling better because I got a lot of time to spend with my kid, my wife, my parents. Yes, I think, I have put in the hard yards. Now, the rest is up to the bigger force," he said. Discussing his plans for the ODI World Cup 2027, a format he has played four times and taken 10 wickets with a five-wicket haul, Varun said that after the Asia Cup, he aims to excel in India's white-ball tours. 'After the Asia Cup, there is a long streak of many white-ball tours coming up and they are challenging ones as well. So the primary goal will be to excel in all those tours, then hit the World Cup with good confidence and more clarity within myself and the process that I am trying to develop," he said. The conditions in Dubai will favour Varun, as he took nine wickets in three matches during the ICC CT 2025. Varun noted that while the wickets in Dubai have been favourable, there are many factors necessary for his performance. 'One factor out of those is the ground conditions, and I hope they favours us. On the other hand, in IPL, you may have seen that the factors and conditions do not help the bowlers much. So, I am also used to bowling in such conditions. Hence, I am ready for both, but I am very eager to see how the pitches are at this point of the year in the UAE," he added. Varun acknowledged the significant role T20I skipper Surya and coach Gambhir played in his comeback. Before the tour of Bangladesh for T20Is, the skipper told him, 'I am looking at you; let's see how things go, but I am keen on having you in the team setup." 'Similarly, Gauti Bhai also has helped me a lot in my comeback, the way he motivates me. Even if we talk little, he has always given me good confidence and he has always told that 'no matter who's going to ignore you, I will keep you in my plans for now". So, that kind of gave me confidence. And if you ask about Gauti Bhai as a mentor, then I would say he brings in a warrior mindset in the dressing room, which is very important and has worked for us at KKR and in the Champions Trophy," he added. Varun noted that, as seen during the 2-2 drawn Test tour to England, Gambhir brings energy to the dressing room, where 'there is no mediocrity." 'You give everything you have and it does not matter whether you win or you lose. And about Surya, he is someone very similar to Rohit Sharma – that is what I've seen. He is a very tactically sound, and maybe his time at MI Mumbai Indians has given him good exposure to great captains. He is a very good guy and never puts pressure on the bowlers. It would be a bowler's delight to have a captain like him," he concluded. Click here to add News18 as your preferred news source on Google. Harbhajan Singh: 'Don't underestimate Shubman Gill, he can dominate T20Is too'

(AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth) NEW DELHI: The Asia Cup 2025 India squad is set to be announced, and the burning question is whether Test captain Shubman Gill will find a place in the team. With India's T20I batting lineup already packed with hard-hitters like Abhishek Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, captain Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya, the selectors face a 'sweet headache' when it comes to Gill's inclusion. India's top six T20I batters boast impressive strike rates: Abhishek Sharma (193.84), Suryakumar Yadav (167.07), Yashasvi Jaiswal (164.31), Hardik Pandya (141.67), Tilak Varma (155.07), and Sanju Samson (152.38). Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh , who has closely observed Gill, strongly believes the youngster deserves a place in the squad. 'In the T20 format, it's important to understand that it's not just about big hitting. If Shubman decides to attack, he can match anyone, because he is a very solid player with strong basics. A batter with such a strong foundation can score runs in any format," Harbhajan told in an exclusive interview. "If you look at the IPL, Shubman has scored runs every season. He has worn the Orange Cap — and that doesn't happen by chance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like SRM Online MBA – Empowering Future Leaders SRM Online Enquire Now Undo And it's not like he bats only at a strike rate of 120 or 130; he can also bat at a strike rate of 160," he added. "Yes, we do have players like Abhishek Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma, but you cannot undermine or underestimate Shubman Gill. He is a very talented batter who can adapt to any format. He is an all-format player. In my opinion, he can play T20s and even dominate the format. We as fans are used to seeing fours and sixes every ball, but you also need batters who can play long innings and rescue the team when required,' Harbhajan said. When asked to name his 15 for the Asia Cup, which is set to be picked on Tuesday, Harbhajan replied: "I think the squad should be: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav – the captain, Hardik Pandya, Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag for the middle order, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant.' ' CRICKET NEVER STOPS FOR ANYONE' The Asia Cup will mark India's first major multi-team tournament without stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma . The duo featured in India's previous two global triumphs — the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 — both won under Rohit's leadership. This, as Harbhajan puts it, is the beginning of a new era. 'See, cricket never stops for anyone. Whether we talk about the time of Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, or Sachin Tendulkar, the game has always gone on. Someone or the other comes in and takes the team forward. Right now, the way Shubman Gill and his team-mates have played in England… Rohit and Virat have left their legacy in the right hands. We have seen the shift happen smoothly. It will be a big tournament that will be played without Virat and Rohit," Harbhajan said. Poll Should Shubman Gill be included in the Asia Cup 2025 squad? Yes, he deserves a spot No, we have better options "The way these youngsters have taken responsibility… I believe this is the natural rule of life — change is inevitable. If there is no change, things become stagnant. Moving forward is always good. And the way Shubman Gill and his team-mates have performed, it's really pleasing to see. "Of course, we have seen this shift earlier as well. When the big players move on, someone else steps up, takes responsibility, and carries the team forward. As long as the team keeps moving in the right direction, that is the main goal. The way Gill and his team have played in England, Rohit and Virat have definitely left their legacy in safe hands,' he added. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
