Carney and Trump hold first major call since tariffs imposed; Ottawa calls discussion 'productive and wide-ranging'
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and US President Donald Trump spoke Thursday(August 21) in what Ottawa described as a 'productive and wide-ranging' conversation, touching on trade disputes, border security, and what both sides are calling the foundation of a 'new economic and security relationship.'
According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office, the leaders also discussed efforts to secure 'long-term peace' in Ukraine and Europe. Carney said on X that the call was focused on building a new economic and security relationship with the United States and supporting peace in Europe, adding that he and Trump agreed to speak again soon.
The discussion comes against the backdrop of an increasingly bitter trade dispute. In late July, Trump imposed 35 percent duties on Canadian imports that do not meet requirements under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). A White House fact sheet emphasized that USMCA-qualifying goods are exempt from the tariff.The measures add to US tariffs already targeting steel, aluminum, copper, and automobiles, sectors critical to Canadian exports. Ottawa has responded with countermeasures, including restrictions on US alcohol sales. The fallout is being felt directly by consumers. Quebec's liquor agency, the SAQ, confirmed this week that it may destroy $300,000 worth of US alcohol after the provincial ban left products unsold for months. Manitoba and Nova Scotia have taken similar steps.
US Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra acknowledged growing frustration in Washington, saying last month that 'there are reasons why the president and some of his team referred to Canada as being mean and nasty to deal with, because of some of those steps.'
While Carney spoke with Trump, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand was in Washington meeting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The State Department said the two discussed negotiations to end Russia's war in Ukraine, Haiti's worsening security crisis, and ongoing tensions in Gaza, including what it described as 'Hamas's obstruction of peace.'Later the same day, Anand joined foreign ministers from Europe, Australia, Japan and the United Kingdom in issuing a joint letter condemning Israel's approval of a new settlement project in the occupied West Bank. The ministers warned the move would 'make a two-state solution impossible.'The outreach marks the highest-profile engagement between Carney and Trump since the US tariffs came into effect, but no breakthrough has been announced. Canadian officials say they are working on ways to shield domestic industries from tariff pressure while addressing American demands on border enforcement, fentanyl trafficking and access to Canadian critical minerals.

USAID didn't give $21 million for poll turnout: US embassy to Centre
Representative image NEW DELHI: USAID did not provide funding of $21 million for voter turnout in India between 2014 and 2024, the US embassy has informed the Indian govt, according to a reply by ministry of external affairs in response to a Parliament question. US President Donald Trump had earlier questioned the alleged funding, saying he suspected "they were trying to get someone else elected". MoS for external affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said that on July 2, 2025, the US embassy shared data that, it said, covered USAID funding in India from 2014 to 2024, including details of implementing partners, objectives and key accomplishments of each activity undertaken. "The embassy also maintains that USAID/India did not receive or provide funding of $21 million for voter turnout in India from fiscal years 2014 to 2024, nor has it implemented any voter turnout-related activities in India," said the minister, in response to a written query in Rajya Sabha. "On July 29, 2025, the US embassy conveyed to MEA that it plans to bring all USAID operations to a close by Aug 15, 2025," he added. The MEA had earlier requested the embassy to urgently furnish details of expenditure incurred on all USAID-assisted/funded projects in India over the last 10 years (other than those being implemented under the seven partnership agreements with Indian govt). The Meta-owned platform has since shut the group down following public outcry over its exploitative content. According to reports, members of the group had been posting explicit photos of their partners, or impersonating women by sharing fabricated intimate images, without obtaining consent. The group had been active since 2019, but Meta told The Financial Times that it remained dormant until May 2025. In the last three months, however, it began hosting explicit content, directly violating Meta's policies on adult sexual exploitation. A Meta spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday that the group was removed for 'violating our Adult Sexual Exploitation policies." Earlier this year, Meta faced criticism for relaxing some of its content moderation policies, a move aimed at appeasing the Trump administration. The decision was made despite repeated calls from civil rights organisations to increase oversight of harmful and exploitative online content. The controversy surrounding the Mia Moglie group has sparked widespread anger across Italy, raising serious concerns about digital gender-based violence and online privacy. It also comes amid growing criticism of how social media platforms handle abusive content, particularly that which targets women. Beyond the digital realm, the incident has intensified focus on gender dynamics in Italian society. According to Vox, the scandal highlights the prevalence of misogyny online, particularly hate directed at women's appearances. If convicted, perpetrators could face up to six years in prison. The Italian law allows individuals affected by revenge porn a period of six months to file formal charges.
