Rybakina reaches semifinals in Montreal after injured Kostyuk stops in second set

Yahoo3 days ago
MONTREAL (AP) — Elena Rybakina advanced to the National Bank Open semifinals after Marta Kostyuk was forced to retire with an apparent arm injury Monday with Rybakina leading 6-1, 2-1.
Rybakina, the No. 9 seed from Kazakhstan, converted three of her 10 break-point chances in the quarterfinal matchup at IGA Stadium. The players shook hands at the 54-minute mark before the 24th-seeded Kostyuk exited the court in tears.
After the third game, the Ukrainian's trainers wrapped her forearm in medical tape.
Rybakina will face the winner of Monday night's matchup between Canadian teen sensation Victoria Mboko and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain.
Mboko upset top-seeded Coco Gauff in straight sets Saturday, winning the lopsided match in just 62 minutes.
The 18-year-old from Toronto has surged from outside the top 300 to No. 85 in the WTA rankings in a breakthrough year.
The tournament final is Thursday. The event's top-five seeds were eliminated before the quarterfinals.

Car accident involving Panthers CB Jaycee Horn caught on camera

According to TMZ, Wednesday morning's car accident involving Carolina Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn has been captured on camera. The video was posted by charlottedashcam on Instagram yesterday afternoon, and shows Horn's black Mercedes-Maybach SUV colliding with a pickup truck at an intersection. Per the team's official statement, the accident occurred at the corner of Charlotte's Mint and Morehead Streets, just outside of Bank of America Stadium. Here's the clip: Horn did not participate in Wednesday's joint practice with the Cleveland Browns, but was present and seen doing individual work alongside fellow starting corner Mike Jackson. Head coach Dave Canales was asked about Horn's status following the session. "Yeah, I don't have a lot of details," Canales told reporters. "I'm glad that Jaycee was okay. He did have to have a few stitches in his left thumb area. And so, they got that all cleaned up sutured up. He's day-to-day right now. We're just gonna kinda evaluate. It doesn't seem like anything else happened." Canales ruled Horn out of Friday's preseason matchup with the Browns. He does, however, hope the Pro Bowl defender will be available for the team's second exhibition game in Houston on Aug. article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Car accident involving Panthers CB Jaycee Horn caught on camera

Sixers star Tyrese Maxey marvels at LeBron James' fitness regimen

Tyrese Maxey is one of the NBA's brightest young stars, and he's a bright spot on a Philadelphia 76ers team that is facing some tough questions these days. The guard eclipsed 25 points a game in both of the last two seasons, and during the 2023-24 campaign, he earned his first trip to the NBA All-Star Game. With major injury concerns surrounding fellow Sixers stars Joel Embiid and Paul George, Maxey has been putting in work this summer with the hope of raising his game another notch this fall. He had the privilege of getting to work out with Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, and he was left marveling at James' passion and work ethic even after 22 seasons in the league. Maxey told ClutchPoints what impressed him about the NBA's all-time leading scorer. 'I think the biggest thing is for me and what I can take from him is just his passion for the game,' Maxey told ClutchPoints. 'Like, I'm extremely passionate. I love basketball. Anytime I can do anything that pertains to basketball, I want to do it. But this man is going on like Year 23 and he was working out and talking and involved like it was probably Year five for him, you know what I'm saying? And that's amazing to see. I think anybody who's able to watch him, not just work out but play should feel honored because it's amazing.' James' legacy is secure at this point, and many consider him one of the two or three greatest players in basketball history. But he will be returning for at least one more season, and his agent, Rich Paul, affirmed earlier this summer that he wants to win a fifth NBA championship. Maxey also said that James has been helpful toward his own efforts. 'I don't know how many times I've worked out with him now,' Maxey admitted. 'I mean, that's crazy to say and, I guess, that's how I know I am getting a little old. But yeah, it's good work, man. It's good work. He does a good job of talking and just being vocal and helping. I'm very appreciative of him. He's done a lot.' Maxey, who is 24 years of age, happens to also be represented by Paul's Klutch Sports Group. On July 22, Venus Williams became the oldest woman to win a singles match on the WTA tour in 21 years after defeating Stearns in the DC Open. Prior to that victory, Williams' last WTA win came in Mason in 2023. The 7-time Grand Slam champion's Round of 16 run in Washington, DC was her first appearance in 15 months. She was awarded a wild card to the Cincinnati Open. Making her first WTA 1000 appearance since the 2024 Miami Open, Williams will face Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (No. 51) in the first round. Marketa Vondrousova, a former top 10 player who is currently ranked No. 63, will face Jaqueline Cristian in the first round of the Cincinnati Open. Vondrousova won a WTA 500 title in Berlin and reached the Round of 32 at Roland Garros. Should Vondrousova advance, it sets up a big early test for reigning Cincinnati Open champion Aryna Sabalenka in the Round of 64. Sabalenka and Vondrousova have split eight career meetings, with Vondrousova winning the last matchup in Berlin on grass. However, Sabalenka is one of the best hard-court players on the tour, with three Grand Slams on the surface. On hard-court, Sabalenka has won three straight over Vondrousova since falling to the left-hander at Indian Wells in 2018. In her last appearance in Mason, Vondrousova reached the Cincinnati Open quarterfinals in 2023 before falling to Iga Swiatek.
