Colombia withdraws statement for Pakistan, will issue strong support for India: Shashi Tharoor
Bogota [Colombia], May 31 (ANI): Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday (local time) said that Colombia will issue a statement of strong support for India's position after the country withdrew their statement condoling the deaths of Pakistanis in Indian strikes.
Tharoor made the statement during the all-party delegation's visit to Tadeo Lozano University in Bogota, where the group also paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
'We met with the Foreign Ministry - the Senior Vice Minister received us. We had some good news: They have withdrawn their statement that disappointed us earlier and will issue a statement of strong support for our position and understanding of our position. Finally, here we are before this beautiful bust of Mahatma Gandhi on the campus of the main university,' Tharoor said.
Former Indian Ambassador to the United States and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Taranjit Singh Sandhu said that the delegation's detailed explanation helped reverse the Colombian stance.
'This morning we had a detailed interaction with the acting Foreign Minister and our leader and the entire team made specific points to them explaining to them the timeline which perhaps to an extent they might have missed out. The end result was that they are withdrawing one of the other statements which had come out and have promised and stated, actually quite clearly, on terrorism and the issue. The importance of Colombia, apart from other reasons, is also that it will be a member of the Security Council soon,' Sandhu told ANI.
Additionally, BJP MP Shashank Mani added that Colombia, a country once plagued by terrorism, now understands India's position well.
'It is notable that terrorism has affected Colombia as well. However, after a long struggle, Colombia is now a peaceful country. We have come here with a message of peace. We have clearly stated that we will give a fitting response to every terrorist attack, and when it is over, we want nothing but peace.'
BJP MP Shashank Mani added that Colombia, a country once plagued by terrorism, now understands India's position well.
In a significant accomplishment for India in its global outreach effort to expose Pakistan and to convey its zero tolerance against Terrorism, Colombia, which earlier in its statement sympathised with Pakistan over the loss of lives, has now withdrawn its statement.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is leading the all-party delegation to the Americas during his Bogota visit, expressed dismay over the South American country's stance during a press conference on Thursday. He said that India was disappointed with the Colombian government for expressing condolences over the loss of lives in Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, rather than sympathising with the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack.
'We were a little disappointed in the reaction of the Colombian government, which apparently expressed heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives in Pakistan after the Indian strikes, rather than sympathising with the victims of terrorism,' said Tharoor.
'We will say to our friends in Colombia, there can be no equivalence between those who dispatch terrorists and those who resist them. There can be no equivalence between those who attack and those who defend. We are only exercising our right of self-defence, and if there is any misunderstanding here, on this core, we are here to dispel any such misunderstanding', he added.
While speaking with ANI on Friday, after the Indian delegation met with the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio in Bogota, said that 'we are very confident with the explanation that we received today and the detailed information that we now have regarding the real situation, the conflict, and what happened in Kashmir, we can also continue the dialogue...'
Appreciating Colombian position on the matter after explaining India's view and position, Tharoor said that 'The Vice Minister very graciously mentioned that they have withdrawn the statement that we had expressed concern about and that they fully understand our position on the matter, which is something we really value,' says Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Colombia withdrawing its earlier statement to ANI.
Tharoor is leading the multi-party delegation to the Americas. After visiting Panama and Guyana, Tharoor and his delegation arrived in Colombia on Thursday in an effort of India's global outreach to convey India's zero tolerance against terrorism. After concluding the Colombia visit, the all-party delegation will be heading to Brazil and the United States on Saturday. (ANI)

The airline is already grappling with a delay in the retrofit of its legacy narrowbody and widebody aircraft, and a complete retrofit or refurnishing of its 13 legacy Boeing 777 now stands postponed with the aircraft set to undergo a limited 'heavy refresh' next year that involves new carpets and seat covers. 'We've got a number of widebody aircraft that require maintenance, including the refit. There isn't the capacity in India to do that for wide-body aircraft and we've had to farm aircraft out to AIESL [Air India Engineering Services Limited- a government-owned MRO]. Obviously, they can't do all of it. We've sent some to Abu Dhabi, some to Singapore, and indeed some to Turkish,' Mr Wilson explained. Air India's low-cost arm, Air India Express, too has an agreement with the Turkish company for component support and solution needs of 190 Boeing 737 aircraft, that include services such as component pooling, repair, overhaul, modification, and logistics services of Turkish Technic. Recently, the DGCA also said that IndiGo has until August 30 to terminate its agreement for leasing two widebody Boeing 777 aircraft from Turkish Airlines which the former has been using since 2023 to provide flights to Istanbul from Delhi and Mumbai after technical challenges in using its own narrow- body Airbus A320 and A321 that had to either take a mid-way fuel stop or carry less than the full load of passengers. The government has also revoked Turkish ground-handling company Celebi's security clearance across airports. But the impact of the military tensions on Indo-Pak border for two of the biggest airlines in India don't end here. Air India has also sought $600 million subsidy from the Indian government for every year Pakistan's airspace remains shut for Indian aircraft as it is forced to re-route its flights to Europe and North America and take a fuel-stop in Vienna for flights to Toronto, Washington DC, Chicago resulting in upto three hours of additional flight duration for some. 'At the time, that was our assessment of what the cost would be,' Mr Wilson said in response to a question. The demand was made after the government asked airlines to share their assessment of the impact of the airspace closure. Air India's flights are also grappling with an impact on passenger and cargo capacity in some cases. 'In order to operate non-stop with a longer flight route, we can't fill all of the seats or all of the cargo capacity,' the airline CEO said. As many as 20-30 seats have to be flown without passengers on some flights. 'We're getting better at optimising the flight route and mitigate the impact on our customers, operations and finances,' Campbell added. The accused, in charge of a school and a hostel, had scolded the deceased following a complaint by another student. After the incident, the student killed himself. A Bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Prashant Kumar Mishra stated that no ordinary person could have imagined that a scolding would result in such a tragedy. EC to cancel EPIC of Afghan nationals living illegally in Patna house
Lucknow: Following TOI's May 29 report about a house in Patna that allegedly became a hotbed for immigrants with multiple fake Indian identity cards, the Election Commission of India is set to remove their elector's photo identity card (EPIC) from the electoral roll. The move is significant as Bihar assembly polls are around the corner. Jandullah Dad Mohammad, an Afghan national from Paktika province, was living at Patna's Wakil Anwer House, impersonating as Rehan, son of Kabir, alongside his brother Mansur. After entering India on a six-day medical visa in December 2019, Jandullah went off the radar in Delhi. By 2020, he had managed to obtain a complete set of fake Indian identity documents. His EPIC (AFS3853934), Indian passport (C6978659), Aadhaar card (322874855132), PAN card (ETXPR8222K), driving license (BR0120210005369), SBI bank passbook (39914603822), Patna Municipal Corporation issued birth certificate (B-2019 10-90097 025254), and even a ration card painted a convincing picture of an Indian citizen. "We are now preparing to revoke the EPIC issued in the name of Rehan," said electoral registration officer (ERO) Raghvendra Pratap Singh. The accused foreign national is currently lodged in Lucknow jail after being caught by the Bureau of Immigration from Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport on May 19. The ECI's consolidated electoral list, published on Jan 7, 2025, under a special summary revision, revealed that the Wakil Anwer House has 12 male occupants, all in their 20s and 30s except one, with no women registered. At least four of them shared identical details: Same age, same father's name (Kabir), and EPICs. Kabir's real identity has been established as Dad Mohammad Khan. His elder son Mansur, who left for Dubai more than six months ago, is registered in electoral roll with two EPICs AFS4130290, AFS4127999. Another resident, Mohammad Sher Khan, also had dual EPICs AFS4129953 and AFS4125266. "Currently, Kabir is missing from Wakil Anwer House, with no confirmation of his existence, though locals confirm his presence in Patna 7-8 years ago. We have cancelled Mansur's and Mohammad Sher Khan's EPICs... One individual cannot have two EPICs," said ERO Raghvendra. He added, "The owner of Wakil Anwer House has not returned to Patna from New Delhi till date. He has now assured to be back around June 9, following which he would furnish details of everyone living in his property."
