Irwin runner-up to Ray in British Superbike opener
Glenn Irwin produced an impressive ride from 15th on the grid to finish second behind Bradley Ray in Sunday's British Superbike Championship opener at Oulton Park.Ray earned a dominant 1.937-second victory as he smashed his own lap record during the race.However, Northern Ireland man Irwin also had an encouraging beginning to the campaign on his Hager PBM Ducati as he moved into third place by lap 13 after getting past last season's champion Kyle Ryde.The Carrickfergus rider moved into second place ahead of Leon Haslam with three laps remaining and held on to that in the closing stages despite the Englishman's attempts to regain the runners-up spot.Ryde had to be content with fifth place after being passed by series debutant Storm Stacey in the closing stages while Tommy Bridewell completed the top six.Irwin's brother Andrew had to opt out of Sunday's opener after crashing in practice earlier in the afternoon. The Honda rider slid off into gravel and while he was reported by organisers to be "OK" after receiving medical treatment, sat out race one.The bank holiday weekend Oulton Park action will continue on Monday with the race two sprint event at 13:15 BST before race three at 16:15.

The former Ibrox boss has spoken about his successor's changes of hitting the ground running at Ibrox Philippe Clement has warned Russell Martin about the lack of stability that has plagued Rangers in recent years. However, he hopes that the new hierarchy at Ibrox can give the Englishman the tools to create his own 'consistent story'. Former Southampton and Swansea boss Martin was officially unveiled as Clement's permanent successor as Gers head coach on Thursday after ex club captain Barry Ferguson has stepped up to the role on an interim basis until the end of the season following Clement's dismissal back in February. Martin's appointment came less than a week after the 49ers Enterprises - spearheaded by new Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh - completed their takeover at Ibrox. Their arrival has also seen further change at boardroom level, with Kevin Thelwell and Dan Purdy both joining the club from Everton as sporting director and technical director respectively after Nils Koppen stood down from his role as the latter. Despite leading the Light Blues to the Premier Sports Cup just two months after his arrival in December 2023, Clement was relieved of his duties earlier this year after just 16 months in the dugout. But the Belgian hopes that the wholesale changes upstairs will give the new man Martin the stability to go out and get the team firing. He told BBC Sport Scotland: "I don't know because a lot of things have changed in the club. "So, a lot of things have changed in the club this last year or the last few years. A lot of things changed over and over again. So I hope because the main thing that's necessary is that the club have stability to work in a good way with the players, with the staff and with everybody in the club to have a consistent story. "I think that's the big part that the club has been lacking for years already. "I hope that the new owners can bring that for the club, for the manager and also for the players." Rangers sporting director makes Russell Martin player signing pledge
Thelwell, who has previously worked at Preston North End, Derby County, Wolves, New York Red Bulls and Everton, was appointed by the Ibrox club last month and started his new role on Monday. The Englishman has been involved in every step of the search to find a replacement for Philippe Clement and is confident that Martin, the former MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton manager, is the right man to lead the Glasgow giants forward. He stressed that he and his staff would support the ex-Scotland internationalist in every way that they could and would not sanction the acquisition of any player without receiving his approval first. Read more: 'Put very simply, the way in which we will be organised is we've got a head coach and we've got a sporting director,' he said. 'Head coaches are responsible for the most important bit, preparation of the team, performance of the team, fundamentally the results. My role is to try and make sure that all the support services that sit around Russell are as strong as they possibly can be to give us the best chance of winning. 'When we talk about recruitment, clearly it's going to be a collaborative approach. I've never been in this role ever where I've signed a player for the first team that hasn't been supported by the head coach or the manager. So we'll talk a lot about how we want to play. 'We'll talk a lot about what profiles we think we need and what positions we think we need. And then between Russell and I and the recruitment team, we'll sit down and identify players that we think can make us better very quickly. And then between us, we'll decide about what we do next from that point of perspective. 'That's generally how I've worked and generally how we've discussed how it's going to work. And for me, that's probably been a good way of working so that we've got some clarity. But then also, it's understood it's a collaborative approach where we work together to get the best outcome.' (Image: Colin Mearns) Martin's surprise appointment has not been well received by many Rangers fans – but Thelwell revealed the former Norwich City defender had impressed him and his new colleagues greatly and described the new man in charge as 'the perfect fit'. 'Through a very stringent and very thorough process, it was clear right from the very start to all of us that Russell was the outstanding candidate and we're absolutely delighted that he's decided to join us,' he said. 'He's had a strong career now, over 250 games, both as a manager and as a head coach. We can all see over the course of that journey, he's sharpened his approach, not only from a technical perspective and a tactical perspective, but also from a personal perspective. 'I'm very excited to see what he's going to bring to Rangers Football Club and the team and very much looking forward to working with him going forward.' We need to be dominating in all moments, all of those key moments of the game. When we've got it, when we haven't got it and then the transition bits in between. 'I'm delighted that we were able to have those conversations, delighted that you made it slightly easier for me with the negotiations and also very, very pleased that you're sat next to me now and getting ready to work.'

Mike Maignan and Jamie Gittens' stances on Chelsea transfer moves revealed
AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan and Borussia Dortmund star Jamie Gittens both wish to join Chelsea this summer, according to reports. The west London club are keen to sign a new goalkeeper after a series of unconvincing performances from Robert Sanchez in the 2024-25 season. Chelsea are already in talks over a deal for Maignan but it is thought that they are reluctant to meet AC Milan's current €30m (£25m) asking price for the France international. As negotiations continue, it has now been revealed by French outlet L'Equipe that the 29-year-old wants to leave AC Milan in order to join Chelsea. The same is true for Dortmund winger Gittens – German outlet BILD have reported – in what has become a double transfer boost for the Blues. 'I think he will fit perfectly to Chelsea, if Chelsea have decided to give an exception in their trading business system. 'If they decide to go for Mike, that is a very good decision because the guy is a real good goalkeeper… I think he will be very useful to Chelsea.'
