ESPN star Jay Harris shares major update amid devastating cancer battle

Daily Mail23-06-2025
SportsCenter host and popular ESPN anchor Jay Harris received good news after his recent prostate cancer surgery.
'My doctor said the surgery went really well – so well, in fact, that the cancer that was in my prostate stayed there,' the 60-year-old married father said in a self-shot social media video.
'Didn't spread to any surrounding areas. So when he took the prostate out, he took that with it. So it's all good. There are other details that I won't bore you with. The main thing is, we're all good and looking forward to July 12, getting back to SportsCenter, getting back to work.
'Just home, resting up, chilling,' he continued. 'Appreciate the prayers and the thoughts and the messages and the calls and the deliveries. Thank you so much. Appreciate all the love and I will holler.'
Harris' t-shirt in the clip is emblazed with the image of wrestling legend Ric Flair, who recently revealed his second battle with skin cancer.
Harris recently announced his prostate cancer diagnosis and his planned surgery on ABC's Good Morning America earlier this month.
'My doctor's quite optimistic, per my last scan, nothing has spread,' he told ABC host and former New York Giants star Michael Strahan. 'So, once we take out the prostate, hopefully that will be it. That's the goal.'
So far, so good, as Harris revealed Monday.
Harris told Strahan he came forward with his diagnosis to help other men, especially African Americans, see the signs of the disease and get themselves checked.
'Because we don't talk. I was at a golf trip with some buddies of mine and we were just sitting around talking about things that I probably can't talk about on television right now. And I mentioned the news to them, I told them what was going on with me. And then the conversation from there was fantastic,' Harris added.
'By not talking about them, I hate to be morbid, but we sentenced ourselves to death for not talking. They had no idea until I brought it up.'
Harris also revealed that his dad had the same disease.
The broadcaster also stated that men should take a cue from women and get regular health check-ups.
Harris' frequent co-anchor Hannah Storm was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer last year and has been checking in on her on-screen partner throughout the process.
Fellow ESPNer and former Showtime boxing announcer Brian Custer has also been a help after undergoing a similar surgery, Harris said.

Gazan woman evacuated to Italy in a 'state of severe physical deterioration' dies in hospital

A 20-year old Palestinian woman described as being in a 'state of severe physical deterioration' has died after being transferred to Italy for treatment, the hospital said Saturday. The patient was admitted to Pisa University Hospital late Wednesday and died on Friday. She was removed from the Gaza Strip as part of a humanitarian mission and arrived with a 'with a very complex, compromised clinical picture,' according to the hospital. She died after entering a respiratory crisis and subsequently going into cardiac arrest, it said in a statement. Hospital staff had performed tests and started supportive therapy before she died, the statement said. The woman, named by Italian media as Marah Abu Zuhri, had arrived in Italy with her mother. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said almost 120 Gazans — 31 patients and their families — had been flown to Rome, Milan and Pisa on three planes. In a post on X, Tajani said that it was the 14th medical evacuation of Palestinians that Italy had conducted since January 2024, and the largest. The hospital did not specify whether the woman had suffered from malnutrition, but said that she had arrived in a 'state of severe physical deterioration.' Eugenio Giani, leader of the Tuscan region, expressed his condolences Saturday for the woman's death. Earlier in the week, United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that starvation and malnutrition in Gaza were at their highest levels since the Israel-Hamas war began. The U.N. says nearly 12,000 children under 5 were found to have acute malnutrition in July — including more than 2,500 with severe malnutrition, the most dangerous level. The World Health Organization says the numbers are likely an undercount. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said last month no one in Gaza is starving. 'There is no policy of starvation in Gaza, and there is no starvation in Gaza," he said. U.S. President Donald Trump responded to Netanyahu's claim by noting the images emerging of emaciated people. 'I don't know,' Trump said when asked if he agreed with the Israeli leader's comment. 'I mean, based on television, I would say not particularly because those children look very hungry.' Over the past two weeks, Israel has allowed around triple the amount of food into Gaza than what had been entering since late May. That was after 2.5 months when Israel barred all food, medicine and other supplies, saying it was to pressure Hamas to release hostages taken during its October 2023 attack that launched the war.

Orioles call up No. 3 prospect Dylan Beavers for MLB debut

August 16 - The Baltimore Orioles selected the contract of outfielder Dylan Beavers, their No. 3 prospect as ranked by MLB Pipeline, on Saturday. He is expected to make his major league debut Saturday night when the Orioles meet the Astros in Houston. Baltimore selected the 6-foot-5 Beavers with the No. 33 overall pick of the 2022 MLB Draft. The left-handed batter has appeared in 94 games this season at Triple-A Norfolk and has a slash line of .304/.420/.515/.935. He has 104 hits, 78 runs, 18 homers, 51 RBIs and 23 steals. Overall, he has appeared in 361 games over four minor league seasons, with a career average of .278, 44 homers, 180 RBIs and 87 stolen bases. Beavers, who turned 24 on Monday, played three collegiate seasons at Cal. He can play all three outfield positions. In a corresponding move, the Orioles designated outfielder Greg Allen for assignment. The Orioles signed Allen, 32, last week after the Chicago Cubs released him. He was hitless in 14 at-bats. --Field Level Media

Browns rookie QB Dillon Gabriel to start vs. Eagles

August 16 - Rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel will start for the Cleveland Browns in Saturday's preseason game at Philadelphia, the team announced. Drafted in the third round in April, Gabriel missed the preseason opener with hamstring tightness and returned to practice on Monday. Fellow rookie signal-caller Shedeur Sanders, who threw two touchdown passes in the Aug. 8 preseason opener at Carolina, will not play against the Eagles due to an oblique injury. "When it's a quarterback, you kind of need that muscle to throw," head coach Kevin Stefanski said of Sanders. "So unfortunately, (it's) going to put him down for a little bit here. We'll treat it day to day and see how he responds. But want to be smart because he's a thrower, so you can't push that thing." Stefanski said veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, 40, is healthy but will not play for the second consecutive week. With Kenny Pickett working his way back from a hamstring injury and Deshaun Watson likely out for the year with an Achilles injury, that leaves only Gabriel and Tyler Huntley available to take snaps in Philadelphia. Gabriel was selected 94th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft after putting up big numbers at three college stops: UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon. Still on the board 50 picks later, the Browns chose Sanders to end a well-publicized draft weekend crash from projections of a top-50 draft rating. Gabriel, 24, said earlier this week that he won't overthink it if he starts against the reigning Super Bowl champions. "I try to just stay in the moment. I'll look forward to that moment once it comes and be right where my feet are," Gabriel said. "The best competitors know how to stay present and be themselves by competing at a high level one play at a time." Gabriel completed 65.2 percent of his passes for 18,722 yards with 155 touchdowns and 32 interceptions across 64 games in college from 2019-24. He rushed for 1,209 yards and 33 scores. --Field Level Media
