Why Yankees, Dodgers Make Sense As Trade Fit For Nationals' Star Closer

FanSided's Nick Villano recently predicted the Washington Nationals would trade their closer, Kyle Finnegan, ahead of the trade deadline.
"We end this list with another relief pitcher on an awful team. It's a tale as old as time," Villano wrote. "Bad teams don't have much use for a closer when they can't get anything out of the starter. So, let's find a new home for Washington Nationals' closer Kyle Finnegan. Finnegan is ideally a setup man at his next stop because he doesn't necessarily have 'hit-and-miss' stuff, but he can get outs.
"That's what matters. He already has 18 saves on the paltry Nationals this season. It's not exactly All-Star worthy like it was last season, but he's doing his job and could have a career-high in ERA. Finnegan is later in his career than some teams would like (33 years old), but he's a quality arm that deserves a chance to do something in the playoffs."

WASHINGTON, DC - JULY 03: Kyle Finnegan #67 of the Washington Nationals pitches against the Detroit Tigers at Nationals Park on July 03, 2025 in Washington, DC.When looking at potential suitors for Finnegan, the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers stand out as obvious landing spots.
The Dodgers have faced as many pitching injuries as any team in baseball. They need to add more talent to their bullpen, despite having multiple closer-level arms at the backend of it. Adding Finnegan would give the Dodgers another reliable arm to slot in at the back portion of games.
The Yankees have a talented bullpen, but they can always add more. While relievers like Ryan Helsley and Jhoan Duran may be enticing, they're likely out of the Yankees' price range. Finnegan could likely be acquired for much less than the top reliever on the market. He'd fit the Yankees perfectly.
Washington will likely get whatever it can out of him. A trade should be expected in the coming weeks.

Dodgers Having Kobe Bryant Bobblehead Giveaway For Lakers Legend
Arguably the most popular athlete to play in Los Angeles, the Dodgers are commemorating late Lakers legend Kobe Bryant with a bobblehead giveaway on Friday, Aug. 8, when they host the Toronto Blue Jays. The first 40,000 fans in attendance will receive the Bryant bobblehead, according to the Los Angeles Times. A distinct giveaway, the bobblehead features Bryant in home Lakers attire (yellow jerseys and shorts with a purple stripe) in the batter's box at Dodger Stadium wearing blue cleats. The color theme is a combination of both traditional Lakers and Dodgers colors. Bryant, who spent his entire 20-year career with the Lakers (1996-97 season to 2015-16 season), helped the franchise win five NBA championships. He was the 2007-08 NBA MVP, a two-time NBA Finals MVP, two-time scoring champion, a 12-time All-Defensive honoree and 15-time All-NBA honoree. Bryant is first in Lakers history with 33,643 points — which ranks fourth in NBA/ABA history — 1,827 3-pointers, 1,944 steals and 1,346 games played and second with 6,306 assists. As for the two L.A. teams, the Dodgers own the best record in the National League this season at 56-38, while the Lakers are coming off a first-round playoff exit at the hands of Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Shohei Ohtani has new venture up his sleeve — a children's book
What can't Shohei Ohtani do? Just days after the two-way star's fifth All-Star appearance, Ohtani, 31, announced that he is coming out with a children's book. Ohtani posted to his Instagram on Thursday that he had co-written a children's book about his dog, Decoy. Advertisement The book, titled 'Decoy Saves Opening Day,' is available for preorder and is set to be released in February of next year. According to the book's website from publisher HarperCollins, the story is about Decoy forgetting his lucky baseball when he is set to throw out the first pitch on Opening Day. AP The website also says Ohtani plans to use the profits from the book to help non-profit animal rescue organizations. 'Shohei Ohtani is the biggest name in baseball and a proud sponsor of animal rescue organizations,' the website reads. 'Shohei and Decoy hope to use the publication of 'Decoy Saves Opening Day' to support the work these amazing nonprofits do helping dogs find their forever homes. While their fictional counterparts are saving opening day, Shohei and Decoy are working to help real-life animals in need.' Outside of the book writing, Ohtani is ramping up his full-time pitching comeback for the Dodgers. Getty Images In his final outing before the All-Star break on Saturday, Ohtani threw three scoreless innings in the Dodgers' 2-1 victory over the rival Giants. The three-time MVP allowed just one hit while striking out four in his fifth appearance this season. 'Overall a very efficient outing,' Ohtani told reporters through an interpreter. 'I was glad that I was able to prevent runs and we were able to keep the lead throughout the game.' Advertisement Ohtani, who did not pitch during the 2024 season, also said he felt his command is improving. 'Aside from the stuff, I'm more happy with the command of my pitches and being able to attack the zone,' Ohtani said. 'Today was one of those days where my fastball felt pretty good, so I leaned on it a little bit more today.' At the plate, he leads the National League with 32 home runs and a .988 OPS.
